Hawke was assuming that the pistol was something like a crossbow, and only a complete idiot would point a crossbow at their own head. Besides, if she looked in the hole, she knew what she would see: a hole. Probably with something at the end of it that would be fired towards an enemy. Not information she needed enough to risk being careless with an unfamiliar weapon.
She was a lot more tempted to ask him to take it apart again and show her how it worked, especially now that she'd fired it. Of course, having aimed into the open sea, she could only make a guess at how far the thing--bullet?--had gone. Whatever this thing was, it was a lot easier to use, and a lot deadlier, than any weapon she'd ever run across. Which was both a good and a bad thing.
"I am interested, yes." She aimed at a spot on the horizon in order to test the sight he'd mentioned, and fired again. "Do a lot of people out here use these? Because if so, I'm going to need to get some better armor."
These things would pierce her leather armor, good as it was (and enchanted to boot), like butter. That was an uncomfortable thought.
Ahh, gotcha.
