[Natsuno hasn't seen Zeff before, and now he's sitting on the deck. He supposes he should introduce himself. He walks up and clears his throat.]

Hello.

[redfootzeff]

[Zeff nods back a greeting.]

You one of the newer ones or the older members?

[reluctantjinrou]

I've been sailing since we arrived the same month together.

[He gives Zeff a polite bow.]

I'm Natsuno. [He says his name with a bit of a sigh, it's because of this crew that he's given up on people calling him anything else.]

[redfootzeff]

With me specifically or with the older crew? [Because "we" is ambiguous in this case.]

...Doesn't sound like you're particularly happy with that.

I'm Zeff.

[reluctantjinrou]

The older crew, the Captain I mean. It's been about five months. So relatively new in the grand scheme of things, but I'd like to think I've picked up the basics.

[He lets out a little snort.]

I've never liked my name, but I have two last names...it just got too confusing and once my first name got out there...let's just say I've given up. It'll do.

[redfootzeff]

Fine then. Natsuno it is.

[He gives the kid the eyeball.]

You hold a position on the ship or just a crewman?

[reluctantjinrou]

[He gives a shake of the head.]

The last time Ace got out the white board he appointed me gunner, but I've only learned the maintenance of a pistol so far. I do things like cleaning, moving the sails where people tell me to...things like that.

[redfootzeff]

So largely a crewman. I'm guessing you weren't a sailor before you came here either, were you?

[He moves to take a seat on something to give his stump a break.]

Not at all. What I was doing is a bit of a long story, but prior to that, I was just a high school student, getting ready for entrance exams to University.

[His life was boring once upon a time.]

[redfootzeff]

So you went on to become a scholar rather than taking an apprenticeship.

[reluctantjinrou]

[Natsuno nods a little bit.]

Well in my world, most students attend school until third year middle school. Many of them attend the three years of high school, and then some go on to university. I was going to become a lawyer. I wanted a well paying job.

[Once upon a time, really. He sighs.]

Wasn't meant to be though.

[redfootzeff]

Very different from my world. Once you learn the basics, you can go on to learn a trade from a craftsman or you go on to become a scholar or soldier. Or a pirate.

[reluctantjinrou]

I've noticed that, that many worlds are incredibly different. Then again, I live in a much more modern place than this place we're in now.

[He hops up on the railing.]

You can still become a tradesperson but that's not...something I'm interested in. My parents are very different to me and my father is a craftsman of sorts. At least his job made more sense then my mother's. [He shakes his head.]

In my country it's not the most respected of professions. My parents were very strange by most standards.

[redfootzeff]

And being a lawyer's more normal by comparison?

[To be honest, the entire system sounds upside-down. Waiting to become a craftsman after how many years of schooling? Far more than seemed necessary for a general education.]

[reluctantjinrou]

Somewhat, yes, although most people become businessmen of some kind. I happen to have the kind of grades that can get me into law school, or would eventually. It would be a shame to squander all that hard work.

[He shakes his head a little.]

As it is, I didn't finish high school in the end.

[redfootzeff]

Because you ended up here, I'm assuming?

[Lawyers making more than craftsmen made sense. Not that he wanted it to. Damn snakes, the lot of them.]

[reluctantjinrou]

Actually no, I died first.

[Natsuno probably should have started there really.]

[redfootzeff]

[And that gets a puzzled expression.]

You died back where you were from.

[reluctantjinrou]

Yes, I did. I died, but I came back as a Jinrou. It's a subspecies of vampire.

[redfootzeff]

Thought that required a bite.

[reluctantjinrou]

It does. [He sighs softly.]

A family of vampires moved into our small, secluded town in the summer. We had a population of about 1300 people. There was this girl who I didn't care much for, but she died not long after they moved in, and this girl was, or at least seemed to think she was in love with me. She stalked me while she was alive, it was very creepy, but when she died she continued to stalk me. She got jealous and decided to kill my best friend, and she made sure I knew it.

[Natsuno has nothing but contempt for Shimizu. She was so very annoying in life and in death.]

I decided to try and fight back and when my friend rose up, he was eventually sent to kill me. Because we were food, they don't just make it quick though. It takes three to four visits to be killed. The only part of any of this that is somewhat lucky is the fact I came back as a Jinrou instead. It's a lot less of a hassle.

[redfootzeff]

[Zeff takes a moment to process this. Most people would probably have dismissed the story as being made up, but Zeff has been to the Grand Line and New World. He'd learned a long time ago not to discount a story just because it sounded ridiculous on the surface.]

Sounds complicated.

[reluctantjinrou]

It is complicated, yes.

[Natsuno sighs a little bit.]

Fortunately I've found myself a very strange and understanding crew.

[redfootzeff]

[Zeff smirks.]

Most pirate crew members don't exactly have the cleanest or prettiest pasts. Though where I'm from, your story is strange but tame to a certain extent: Aside from trying to confront them, your worst offense was catching a vampire's eye.

[reluctantjinrou]

[He gives a small half-smile.]

Not entirely. Before I came here, I was certainly not finished making them pay. We had a plan, which I suppose was executed in some way. I haven't asked Ozaki-sensei the details yet. He's from further in the future than I am. I wanted to make them regret coming and killing out nearly the entire town.

[He pauses.]

But more then that, I wanted revenge for what they did to my best friend.
