It does. [He sighs softly.]

A family of vampires moved into our small, secluded town in the summer. We had a population of about 1300 people. There was this girl who I didn't care much for, but she died not long after they moved in, and this girl was, or at least seemed to think she was in love with me. She stalked me while she was alive, it was very creepy, but when she died she continued to stalk me. She got jealous and decided to kill my best friend, and she made sure I knew it.

[Natsuno has nothing but contempt for Shimizu. She was so very annoying in life and in death.]

I decided to try and fight back and when my friend rose up, he was eventually sent to kill me. Because we were food, they don't just make it quick though. It takes three to four visits to be killed. The only part of any of this that is somewhat lucky is the fact I came back as a Jinrou instead. It's a lot less of a hassle.

[Zeff takes a moment to process this. Most people would probably have dismissed the story as being made up, but Zeff has been to the Grand Line and New World. He'd learned a long time ago not to discount a story just because it sounded ridiculous on the surface.]

It is complicated, yes.

[Natsuno sighs a little bit.]

Fortunately I've found myself a very strange and understanding crew.

[Zeff smirks.]

Most pirate crew members don't exactly have the cleanest or prettiest pasts. Though where I'm from, your story is strange but tame to a certain extent: Aside from trying to confront them, your worst offense was catching a vampire's eye.

[He gives a small half-smile.]

Not entirely. Before I came here, I was certainly not finished making them pay. We had a plan, which I suppose was executed in some way. I haven't asked Ozaki-sensei the details yet. He's from further in the future than I am. I wanted to make them regret coming and killing out nearly the entire town.

[He pauses.]

But more then that, I wanted revenge for what they did to my best friend.

[redfootzeff]

[Zeff snorts.] Learned the hard way that revenge isn't always the best plan, did you?

[reluctantjinrou]

No, it seemed like a pretty good plan. What happened to me didn't matter. I didn't want to live like this.

[He sighs.]

My mind has been changed on that matter.

[redfootzeff]

[That earns an eye roll.]

Sounds like a certain eggplant I could name who was willing to give up his own life for some debt that he conjured up in his head.

I was much more selfish about it. I wanted all the vampires dead. No exceptions, not even me. Then I was taken here and I've found some sort of home here. It's a very strange thing for me. I'm not exactly the type of person people like.

[redfootzeff]

I'm assuming your attitude towards dying's changed as a result, too?

[reluctantjinrou]

Something like that, yeah. I made a promise to Riku that I wouldn't die before he did. I don't know how I'll feel by then, but...

[Natsuno pauses.]

Well permanently anyway. When you die here, you come back a few days later.

[redfootzeff]

So I've heard. I'm not sure if that's convenient or just annoying.

[It's not right for the dead to rise. No offense.]

Depends really if you intended to die or not. I died unintentionally not that long ago. I'm not seeking death but if it happened...I'd be fine with it.

[So not offended.]

Believe me, the dead don't really want to come back to life anyway.

[redfootzeff]

Good to know.

And your intentions? You hoping to find a way to die for good some day?

[reluctantjinrou]

[Natsuno looks like he's thinking about it, giving his question careful consideration.]

I honestly can't say. Perhaps that would be the case, although I gave Riku my word not to do so before he did which is at least a lifetime's worth. I can't imagine living forever though, it would be a lot to contemplate. Life forever, looking like a sixteen year old.

[He frowns a little bit.]

[redfootzeff]

Hmph. If I had to live forever, sixteen definitely isn't the age I'd want to be stuck at.

Then again, I plan to live another hundred years or so which should be forever enough for me.

[He rubs absently at his stump though the twinge of pain he feels is coming from lower than that.]

Just don't deliberately put yourself in an early grave. You're likely to die with more regrets that way.

Right? It would be hard to pass off as much older then that, although I'm only seventeen as of yet. Here they don't seem to care much about your age.

[He glances at Zeff and nods a little.]

I don't know when or how I'll die permanently...but I've already died with regrets originally. I would take care not to do so again. People think, when you're a child especially, that living forever seems like a fine idea, but when you're faced with it, it's really not a good thing. Doesn't feel like it is at any rate.

[redfootzeff]

My world doesn't really have an age limit when it comes to who works on a ship either. If you have two working hands, can work hard, and can avoid getting washed overboard, it doesn't matter if you're five or fifty. 'Course you'll be closer to the bottom of the food change the younger you are.

[Zeff snorts.] And you just verified that living forever is a terrible wish to have. Me? I'm perfectly happy living longer than my enemies so I can gloat at their gravestones before it's my turn to go. I've got shipmates waiting for me when I finally kick the bucket, and I don't want to keep them longer than necessary.

[reluctantjinrou]

In my world there's age limits for most things really. You can't work until middle school is over, so about fifteen. You can only work part-time if you're in school if your school permits you. You have to be eighteen to drive, and twenty to drink.

[It's a tight social construct, really.]

My plan for my enemy was to take him with me. Gloating would have been nice, but as long as he dead I think that will be enough for me. I didn't have much hope in beating him.

[He frowns a little, looking serious.]

If he appeared here, I wouldn't hesitate to kill him.

[redfootzeff]

[Zeff snorts.] What a ridiculous system. Most people are already apprenticed by the time they're ten whether it be with their parents or in a shop or on a ship somewhere. Makes them much more knowledgeable about what they're doing and more prepared to go out and make something of themselves.

As long as it doesn't interfere with the captain's orders, it's your business what you do with your time. Even if it is to kill someone.

I didn't mind it that much for the most part, since my aspirations were academic anyway and there wasn't much of a way to fast track that.

[He nods.]

I don't think he'd mind.

[redfootzeff]

[Zeff gives his head a disbelieving shake.] For the field you were talking about, it makes sense to have the extra schooling, but for anyone else? Seems a bit much.

You've been on his crew longer, so you'd know better than me. If that guy ever shows up here, I won't stand in your way to do what you have to.

[reluctantjinrou]

I'm not entirely sure what the goal is honestly. It's not like the students enjoy school that much. Well, most of them. A lot of the job prospects are in office buildings with big companies. I guess there aren't a lot of trades jobs around anymore. Until I came here, I never gave much thought to fighting either. It's a very different life.

[Natsuno sighs.]

The only problem is that he'd come back. It'd be a wasted exercise. No matter how satisfying. I could always settle on the hope that I get him back home. I could ask Ozaki-sensei, but I don't know if he'd tell me. We haven't really talked about this stuff since he came. I want to ask about my dad.

[redfootzeff]

You're all mostly salarymen now? [He scoffs at that.] Your world better hope nothing major happens with a lack of tradesmen like that.

I heard about that "death not being permanent" thing. Still can't wrap my head around it completely. It's not right for the dead to rise without some sort of Devil Fruit ability to do it.
