What: Rogue is turning 18. Keimi organized a birthday party to her.

[Remy could pretend to understand - but really, he doesn't think he has a clue. The Acolytes were disjointed and constantly at odds on their good days. The only thing that unified them was a paycheck or a desire to see the job done. He and Pyro had gotten on like a house on fire but Colossus had been a little less than pleased to be around them and Sabertooth was...well, Sabertooth.

The Guild had been like family, yes - but there was always a degree of separation. Maybe it was because he was adopted, maybe it was because he was a mutant or maybe it was because of all that bullshit the old folks kept saying about him.

Regardless, Remy LeBeau didn't know what that feeling was like: belonging.

He watched her silently as she spoke, sort of enraptured at how she worked her way through things and when she finished he was left with something close to a real smile before he plucked the bottle from her hands.]

...Y'really like it here, don'tcha?

'S like Mardi Gras.

[He'll know exactly what she means. At least, she likes to pretend he will. Like that wasn't just some job for him.

"I always loved Mardi Gras. No matter who you are, you fit in."]

None of 'em care. Where y' came from, what's diff'ren'.

Jus' matters if you'll stand with 'em when they need it.

[Not one of them had been afraid of her. Had recoiled at learning what she could do. Two, at least, had seemed eager to show her the world through their eyes.]

Even Logan. [There... a note of hesitance, but she tries not to dwell on it.] Don' think he minds too much I ain' the Rogue he knows.

...Least I hope he doesn'.

[Nope. No. She isn't thinking about that. She reaches for the bottle.]

Ain' too bad a place.

[Remy eases the bottle out of her reach before taking a quick swig and handing it back while giving her a look that says: "Wait your turn missy"

It's better than looking at her with no small amount of envy in it.]

Y'deserve it.

[The belonging. He holds the bottle out to her.]

[Rogue takes a quick drink to clear her mind of thoughts of Logan. That he might be disappointed because she wasn't the Rogue he knew.]

Lotta people 'round here think this gem's the answer. The way t' get home.

I think it sounds like a distraction. Way t' keep us focused on somethin' else.

All th' more reason t'get it first.

[The look on his face should say it all.]

If it even exists. Why would they advertise somethin' like that?

[Yeah, she has her doubts on this actually being a thing.]

[Gambit shakes his head, looking like he's chastising her with a smile before he tilts his head back and sighs - like he's got everything figured out now and Rogue's just being adorable.]

Yo' just gonna keep yo'self up with questions like dat, chere. And get no answers for it.

Who cares? Someone'll go snooping and find out. Den everyone gon' be askin' mo' questions. Vicious questiony cycle.

[He might be sliding a hand over to grab that bottle from you, honey.]

[Rogue takes another drink when his hand extends and then surrenders the bottle.

She tries to smile. She really does. Some easy, carefree expression that says she's not worried about the ruby. Because she's not.

But she doesn't really manage that look. Instead, it's just distant.]

That ain' what keeps me up.

[Remy doesn't pause between taking the bottle and and drinking from it - exhaling roughly as he pulls it away and sets it between them on the rail.

There's a few seconds of silence before he quietly speaks, just above the break of waves against the hull below them.]

I know.

[She looks at him. For a moment, her expression is almost unreadable. Strangely neutral.

Because he means it. It is, actually, something pretty sweet. Considering the source, at least.

But... he hadn't faced Apocalypse. He hadn't seen the Eye of Ages vanish. Hadn't heard the professor's grave proclamations.

She looks away, out at the dark sea.]

No. Y'don'.

So tell me.

[He says it like it's that simple. Maybe it's the drink making him so sure but isn't that always his M.O. ? Self-assurance?

Or just plain arrogance?]

Apocalypse.

[It's murmured. In a way, there might even be a bit of reverence in that single word.

After all, a mutant who could dominate the will of the strongest. Someone who could grab her, who could drain power from her. Someone they couldn't kill. Only trap.]

He's in the Eye of Ages.

Trapped but alive.

Logan referred to it as "falling through the cracks of time."

[Maybe the pause is theatrical. Maybe she's giving in to the drama. Maybe she's letting him influence her.

Because Gambit does like things dramatic.

But is drama is flashy, a magician diverting attention.

Hers is quiet, the creeping shadow against the wall.]

Look around.

What would you call this?

[Falling through the cracks of time.]

[It would explain a lot. It's been one of the lingering theories in his mind since he's gotten here. But he preferred not to think about it in light of the utter awesomeness of pirates.

...Yeah, he might have gotten a bit caught up in it. And Rogue's point isn't entirely impossible...

Still he is drunk, and doesn't want to give her the satisfaction of killing his buzz so he shrugs his shoulders and makes himself look confused.]

So you think what...we're stuck in the cracks with 'im?

Seems as likely as anythin' else.

[Maybe it's not Apocalypse.

But the timing? And the strange, almost unrealness of the situation? It makes her think of Apocalypse. Of that resurfacing.]

So what 're ya gon' do about it?

[He seems a little more focused in now. Aware of the conversation in a way he hadn't been before.]

Try t' find out if it's him.

[She shrugs again, holding out her hand for the bottle. She needs a drink just thinking about it.]

If it is? Find 'im.

[Remy gladly hands it over, wanting her more drunk and less serious just so he could steer the conversation away from this shit.]

An' somehow I don' see dis endin' in you jus' chattin'...

Stopped 'im once.

[And she takes a drink.

Before giving him a bit of a glare, and her voice might take on just a bit of a bite.]

No thanks t' you.

[Remy offers a meeker smile, and doesn't reach for the bottle. Yeah, he figured he'd be getting an earful for that at some point with Rogue.

Instead of telling her the truth or - god forbid - try to apologize Remy shrugs and says the dumbest thing in the world:]

Y'all handled it jus' fine.

Course we did.

[Now, there's the bite.

And it's accompanied by another good drink from the bottle.]

'S what we do. Handle things.

Yeah... [He just sighs, he's getting sober already - this conversation is very unfriendly to inebriation.]

Yeah, y'do.

[There's another patch of silence - made less awkward by the waves but not by much.]

So, hows it feel: savin' de world?

Only thing I saved it from was somethin' I helped let out.

[So. Not that great, actually.]

Dunno. After all that?

'M glad t' be here.

Yeah, cause dat was yo' fault.

[He's being incredibly sarcastic.]

Well, y' still got someone t'watch over ya, any rate.

Lots of someones in fact.

[That actually makes her smile just a little.]

I do.

Guess that means I'm gonna be alright.

[She hasn't forgotten a moment of that conversation. Of that day.]

Guess so.

[Remy smiles before casually reaching over her lap to pluck the bottle out of her hand. If she'll let go that is.]
