Thinking on it a moment, Ace drew his hands into his pockets for something else. He pulled out a 'watch' with three glass spheres attached. In each glass sphere, there was a compass spinning on a floating ball, each one constantly turning in different directions. Occasionally, they would get stuck and point to the ground.

He shrugged, figuring his New-World Log Pose would be a suitable sort of answer.

"That's a log pose made for the New World. It's set to distinguish between a ton of different magnetic fields all at once and discern the intensity of strength in them so you can navigate on the Grand Line," He repeated it verbatim, though it wasn't a textbook line-read. Ace knew exactly how the Pose worked and how it best functioned. He didn't need to carry it either, but it didn't hurt. He checked it everywhere they went, to see if it would be useful.

"Stuff like this is normal, where I come from," He continued, eyes focusing on the needles. "If a friend comes back to life, that's weirder than normal, but still. If I question everything, I'll use up all my good words for when they really matter."

"Well," he eyes the log pose appreciatively, "I question everything. All the time. 'course, no offense but I've got a lot more words and such than you do most of the time. I can't help it, I just get curious, and that's part of the fun and adventure of all this."

Still, Ace didn't seem satisfied with the log pose. He put it back in his pocket, presumably where he considered it the safest. In fact, simply by merit of it being on his body, it was in the most dangerous position in the world.

"Yeah, but you're good with words. You use a lot of 'em, but you still say a lot. I've gotta take the few words I'm good worth and use 'em so I don't waste 'em. Otherwise, I sound dishonest," He paused, frowning a bit more. "Or, dishonest."

"You know, if you really want to use words more, you could try reading. A little schooling never hurt anyone."

Hell, it produced this goofball.

"Or if you're really concerned, I know a book I could lend you."

"I've been trying, lately," Ace admitted. He had one book--an adventure book he bought in Marge's that seemed simple enough to catch his attention. 'Treasure Island'. He hadn't even gotten past the first sentence. Once glance at the page and something needed doing. Someone passed by and he wanted to talk to them. A soldier spat on him and he needed to deal with them.

"Ahhh. I think it's more my patience."

"Patience is something you have to find, not learn, sadly. Not everyone is born with it, after all. But I think you could find that. After all, you're patient enough to plan a course, and deal with all the nonsense that comes with running a ship. Maybe you could stand to be a bit less hot-headed, but you know...I don't think that'll be happening anytime soon."

"Nah," Ace laughed, smiling with a wide and toothy sort of expression. He sat down in a chair off by the door, watching the Doctor piece through things to find what was useful. It made him look even smarter than he was--which was saying a lot.

"If I weren't hot-headed, we'd get nowhere close to success. In this world, people have to be unreasonable. Not everybody--but, leaders do."

"I would disagree with you there," the Doctor chides, "honestly I think that leaders are the people who most need to be reasonable. Since there are consequences for their followers."
