Trial of the Spades

What: Shenanigans! The Cold Curse, Sailing, Etc
Warnings: None so far. Possibly violence, given this crew.
Style: Prose/Action. Either or!

[Natsuno is surprised when he takes his hand again. He isn't expecting Riku to take his hand again and he looks at him a little wide-eyed when he does. He sucks in a breath at his words, and the warmth is starting to go away. He squeezes his hand and leans over, hiding his face into Riku's shoulder.]

It's not your fault. Like I said, it doesn't hurt as much as it used to...it's not as hard.

[He speaks softly.]

I guess it's part of being alive, huh?

Life and death? Falling in and out of love? Yeah, it is.

But, uh...you'll find someone else.

[Soon, hopefully. Maybe.

Riku chews on his bottom lip, letting his head fall to the side a little so he's resting against Natsuno. He keeps massaging his hand, trying to be -- comforting. Or something.]

[He lets out a soft laugh, which seems unlikely for the mood, but there it was.]

I'm not too worried about that. I'm sure that's true. I meant more the missing your best friend.

[Natsuno shakes his head a bit. It is comforting, whatever he's doing and he looks up at him after a moment.]

Just because it hurts, doesn't mean I can't talk about it. Maybe it's better if I do. I feel a little better, oddly enough. Could just be you though.

Oh, right. That's...harder. I know I would've been hurting for a long time if Sora hadn't...

[He trails off, then gives a faint shake of his head.]

Don't know what I have to do with anything, I'm just sitting here.

[Uselessly and without anything helpful to say, he's just bringing up bad memories for probably selfish reasons.

He sighs, shifting a bit and letting his head thunk off the crow's nest behind them now instead.]

[Natsuno nods. He knows Riku knows what that crushing feeling is like, and he would give anything to make sure he didn't feel it again. Personally, that feeling was the worst.]

Yeah, I know, but you're always there. Even if I don't know that I need you around...so, thanks. Why are you asking about Tohru?

[He's not upset he asked, but he's not sure why either. He wonders...but at the same time, what he said was probably not what Riku wanted to hear.]

...Um.

[Pulls his hand away from Natsuno, using it to rub the back of his neck awkwardly instead.]

I was just—curious, I guess. Where you stood with him.

Nowhere. It's always been like that, my feelings aside.

[He sighs softly. He's not sure if he should say anything else, but he exhales.]

I don't think of him as much as maybe I should anymore. I've been...distracted.

Yeah, but your feelings are just as important as anything else. If you still really...

[Frowns a little, choosing his words carefully.]

I was just wondering how strongly you felt about him, I guess. Not just...as a friend. But. You know.

[Glances at Natsuno.]

And we've had a lot going on in a short period of time, I don't think it's a bad thing if you've been distracted. It's understandable, more than anything.

[Natsuno nods a bit, shifting so his legs are crossed and he leans back against the wall, his hands resting on his knees instead. All this moving around is putting distance between them.]

Are you disappointed?

[May as well not dance around the issue anymore. Riku asked for a reason.]

[Thinks about that for a minute before answering.]

No, I don't think so. That's about what I expected, and anyway, best friends, complicated feelings, I know how that goes.

[Huffs out a breath, rustling his bangs.]

But you think you can move past it.

[It's half a question, half a statement.]

[He nods his agreement. That about sums it up really. Complicated feelings, but then again feelings in general are complicated.]

I'm certain that I can. Like I said...he died awhile ago, and I know that. Even in my heart I know it. It hasn't been overnight or anything but...just...yeah.

Mm...

[Looks down at his hands. He's starting to feel chilly again, which makes him tempted to settle in against Natsuno like he'd been doing before. But he doesn't.]

Okay. Can I tell you something now?

[The chill is coming back and Natsuno rubs his hands absently, nodding at Riku.]

Sure, go ahead.

So.

[Hunches over a little, drawing his half of the blanket in closer around himself.]

Feel free to ignore this, I don't want to make things weird. But.

[He glances at Natsuno out of the corner of his eye, though he's sort of hiding behind his hair at the same time, and the corner of his mouth tugs upward into a tiny half-grin as he gives a little shrug.]

I think I like you.

[He listens, arching an eyebrow at the preface. What could possibly be weird?

Oh.

His lips curve upward. There's no chance that would bother him, after all, the flirting they've been doing has been incredibly hot. Like he said, he'd been distracted and it wasn't just coming to a new world, sailing the seas. Most of his distractions begin and end with Riku. He knows he cares for Riku, Riku who wants him to survive and has been incredibly supportive. It's just he's been too worried about the repercussions to say anything.]

Well. Riku. This might be weird, but...

[He trails off and puts his arm around Riku's shoulders and leans in close. He makes sure to catch his attention before moving to close the gap between them. A kiss is much better than anything he can say, he figures.]

[-----Oh. WELL THEN.

That. Was not entirely unexpected, but surprising enough that Riku's eyes go wide and he mostly just sits there, motionless, a little shocked that Natsuno made such a bold move.

Shocked and, well, sort of -- giddy. Embarrassingly so.

He's never kissed anyone before, though, and the surprise factor keeps him frozen in place until Natsuno begins to pull back. Then he blinks, hard, and sucks in a breath, eyeing Natsuno in something akin to amazement.]

...Okay, so that makes this easier.

[Speaks faintly, somewhat dazed, but then his head abruptly clears and he's hit with the thought that his involvement in that kiss was pretty failtastic, and he's quickly reaching out to grab Natsuno's shirt and haul him back in.]

Wait, that was terrible, come back. Do-over—

[And then they're kissing again, and Riku makes sure he's not such a statue this time. 8D]

[When Riku gives him a shocked, glazed look, Natsuno can admit to feeling pretty good about that. It was much better than anything he could say about his feelings.

The feeling is mutual, and that's enough to make him feel just as happy and surprised as Riku. Even if Riku thinks it's pretty failtastic, Natsuno was suitably impressed. There's definitely a spark between them.

His eyes go wide when he's grabbed.]

It wasn-mmph.

[Seems Riku didn't need encouraging, Natsuno kisses him back. It doesn't hurt that the chill is leaving again, even so he still shivers. It's not related to the cold. He's just as inexperienced, but in his opinion it's a pretty good kiss.]

[Yeah, it's better when he's actually kissing back, though.

A lot better.

Riku grins against Natsuno's mouth before pulling back a little, eyes opening to give Natsuno a searching look.

After a moment, his grin widens.]

Guess that's one way to warm up.

Mmhmm. Effective even.

[Natsuno smiles back and he sighs a little and moves around so he's curled up properly with Riku again because if he doesn't he's going to be pretty cold, pretty soon, and why bother with that if Riku's there?]

You've been on my mind for a little while. I just...wasn't sure.

[He confesses this with a blush.]

Very effective.

[Settles against Natsuno, enjoying the warmth passing between them again now that they're not sitting there all uncertain and awkward. He laughs lightly when Natsuno blushes, then reaches for his hand again just for the hell of it.]

Same. I still don't really know what I'm doing, but. [He shrugs, looking cheerful enough.] Think I made the right move.

[Natsuno lets him have his hand, lacing his fingers with Riku as he leans on his shoulder again.]

I agree. I don't think anyone really knows what they're doing anyway, so don't worry about it. Can't be that hard to figure out.

I guess not. I'm not too worried about it.

[He stares down at their hands for a moment, and his expression slowly sobers.]

...So, one more thing.

[He blinks at him and tilts his head a bit.]

What's that?

I don't want to be that guy, but do you think we could keep this quiet for now?

[If they could even manage that on a ship this size.]

I should probably sit Sora down and...tell him. Before anyone else finds out. Or he'll get all pouty at me for keeping secrets again.

[Looks a little awkward and rubs the back of his neck.]

[Natsuno nods a bit after a moment.]

That's fine, I suppose.

[He's not the kind of person to go around bragging anyway.]
