[He blinks a little and gives Marco a little smile again.]

Hey, I thought you went up there, huh? Do you want me to put the board back down for you?

[Marco shakes his head no, and gently nudges Roxas with a headbutt before whistling again softly.]

Talk.

[Of course he can't understand the whistling, but it doesn't seem like Marco wants to play. Roxas moves his hand over and runs his fingers through the feathers again.]

I can pet you.

[That's what he wants, right? Roxas can probably do that and think at the same time.]

[Marco sighs and rolls over on his back trying to play vulnerable for a bit.]

[One day he will have to learn Leanne's galdrars, even if they won't have the effects.]

[For now he settles for singing this, but if Thatch or Ace notice it, he'll deny it fervently.]

[He pets him, quiet for a little bit, but Roxas never did like quiet. He speaks softly, but keeps his hand over Marco.]

I'm mad at Lea. No..not mad. It's like being mad, but not really the same. He's really lucky you know. He's my best friend, but something happens later, in the future and he gets his heart back. He used to be called Axel.

[A slow nod and Marco nudges Roxas as comfortingly as he can.]

Jealous? [A quiet whistle. Even though Roxas probably wouldn't understand the word.]

[Still, it was actually like him and Thatch, only in reverse, he suspected. Axel got less dark and found his life, and Thatch had the opposite happen. He found his death and got more dark.]

[Marco idly flicks his tail up and down before tilting his head at Roxas to wait for the boy to continue talking.]

[Was Thatch jealous too? Upset that Marco had to continue living without him? But Marco had been able to dye his hair and feather to symbolism that they were still the same; together. Maybe Axel could do something like that too?]

[It was jealousy, but it wasn't one of the feelings that Axel told Roxas about so he's confused by it.]

It's really good though, for him I mean. I don't know how it happened, he won't tell me anything about it. He's always keeping secrets from me. That makes me mad.

[Roxas is sure of that emotion, he's very familiar with it.]

It can't happen for me. I'm not like that, Namine said. I'm not supposed to exist and I won't, when we get back. It'll just be Sora. We're the same person, only, even as Nobody I didn't really come out right.

When I died, with that cook's soup, it was just like that. I disappeared as if I wasn't here to begin with.

[A sinking feeling fills his stomach at the thought. He's not sure how to describe it.]

[Marco gives a low sad whistle, quiet and mournful. So it was the same as Thatch in a way. Not joining with someone else, but no going home.]

[Another low whistle and Marco curls up around Roxas protectively.]

At least you have here, eh?

[Unfortunately, Roxas has to go home, or Sora can't exist and fulfill his destiny. Sora would remain asleep, suspended in that egg and Xemnas would win, maybe.

Marco is a really smart bird and Roxas nuzzles his nice soft feathers.]

When I get back, it's going to be really important, but it makes me really mad too. I'm scared. I can't tell Lea because he gets upset about it. It isn't really his problem anymore anyway. He has a heart again...

[Whether theories are right or not, Roxas doesn't know. Does he have his own heart? It's possible but unlikely. It doesn't change the fact he came from Sora, and Sora needs him to wake up.]

We got into a fight. He asked me what I was thinking about and then he got that look on his face, and he says my name in that way where he's thinking...I don't know. He seemed sad and I don't like that either.

[Ugh, emotions are so confusing.]

[Marco's tail swishes up and down again, thinking about moving on. Is that how Thatch feels too? He gently nudges Roxas back and gives him a quiet phoenix snuggle to reassure him.]

[It sounded like Roxas just needed to talk more with Lea to try to work things out at least. To get used to the changes and everything else.]

[Roxas definitely needs to talk with Lea, except neither one of them seems to want to get beyond circling issues.]

It's kind of annoying, when he's never telling me anything.

[He grumbles a little.]

Then again he probably thinks dealing with me is pretty annoying sometimes too.

[Marco shakes his head and gives a low whistle in disagreement, nudging Roxas again to make sure he caught it.]

No way. He probably just doesn't know what to say or how to say it yet. These things take time.

[He just sighs heavily.]

I'm scared to disappear, but that's stupid because I'm Sora, or at least, I'm supposed to be. If I remembered my life before I might not be so worries about it, I guess. Maybe that's why Lea can just forget about being Axel.

[He gives his head a small shake and he smiles a little bit.]

I guess I can just hope Namine is right.

[If phoenixes could frown better, Marco would be super frowning all over this. Talk of disappearing really worries him. He doesn't ever want to lose Thatch again, and now he's adding a few more to that list it would seem.]

[He gives a low deep sad whistle, and quietly tilts his head. Namine?]

[Roxas can be pretty cheerful most of the time, but dying was enough to make him a little introspective.

He feels a little better though, after talking to Marco and he just keeps petting him idly. Even if his pet can't respond, it's still good. He can't talk to Lea, it always just ends up in a fight.

Roxas gives Marco a grin though and tries to smooth his feathers down, in case he's disturbed some with his finger combing.]

You're a really cool bird Xifer.

[Thatch too.]

[Marco gives a low lazy whistle and nudges Roxas comfortingly to say he was cool too.]

[It wasn't much, but it seemed to help, and Marco often didn't get to feel like he could help people with words anymore.]

[He hugs Marco again, nuzzling into his feathers, undoing all his hard work, just because he can.]

I didn't know you didn't have an owner. That's pretty good. I guess everyone looks after you right? Having a pet would be great though. I don't know if I could have one though because we're out at sea and everything.

[He seems to think about it.]

I wonder if Sora had a pet, but somehow I don't think so. I didn't ask Lea if he had one.

[He laughs softly in phoenix.]

[Normally he'd be very irritated at being called a pet, which of course was why Thatch was careful not to. The only exception Marco had ever made was being called Whitebeard's pet, so long as the world knew what would happen if they tried to touch him, but he'd always appreciated being called Whitebeard's son more. It was strange. Back then it'd been important to be a son. But with his father gone, Marco felt like going wild again. So being a pet meant he was keeping himself around people, even when he wanted to run.]

[He gave a nod and another nudge to Roxas, shining brightly and scattering a few sparkled on the kid.]

[Later he'd have to make a note to leave a note for Roxas or pass a message along to Lea that the phoenix said he'd be Roxas' friend so that Roxas could have something to set him apart from Sora.]

[So long as Roxas didn't mind sharing him with Ace and Thatch of course. Especially since if Marco got the Spade tattoo it would go on his wing. But maybe that would encourage Roxas to match him too.]
