Since the business with the witch, the Shepherd has been docked in Isle Impieze, as they work to sort out the repercussions of these events.

You can really understand what that bird's saying, Henry?

[Wide blue eyes watch both him and the crow. Asbel's out here stretching his legs and trying to help out with gathering supplies and stuff (whether they asked him or he just made up his mind to do so remains to be seen). But the racket all these seagulls are making wheeling around everywhere has proven more than enough to attract the young would-be lord's attention. There sure are a lot of them! And they're way more interesting than waiting around at some stuffy old shop anyway.]

[Not that he's forgotten about the supplies or anything! This is just a detour.]

Huh? Oh, hey-o, Asbel!

[Henry looks up at the younger boy and waves. The crow also looks up, but doesn't really do much other than tilt its head.]

Yep, that's right! I can understand what all these birds are saying, actually! They're not that much fun to talk to, though. They just yell a lot about food, ha ha. Crows are way more interesting!

[The crow caws in response, almost as if in agreement.]

[Asbel waves back and moves a little closer. There are an awful lot of birds around here, and he'd rather not give them the wrong idea and have to fight them all off. ~~They'd never stand a chance, after all!~~]

Huh. That's pretty cool! So then, if those birds complain about being hungry all the time, what do crows talk about?

[It does seem like a smart bird, somehow.]

Well, that varies from crow to crow, just like with people! But for the most part, they like talking about dead stuff, since they hang around corpses a lot. It's usually like that for scavengers.

[Casually petting the crow as he talks about corpses. You know, as one does.]

But this one's talking a lot about the town and the sea. She likes the water a lot!

[Secretly all this talk of corpses is kinda disturbing, even as he pretends to be interested. Sure, bones and stuff are really cool(!)...but only as long as you don't have to think about the fact someone or something had to die first.]

Yeah, I guess that'd make sense. So birds are their own people, too. Er, bird-people? [He watches the crow.]

The ocean is nice, though. My hometown's near the sea, and there's a really great view from up on this hill north of town. We used to check out the boats at port sometimes, too, but nothing like this.

Pretty much, yeah! But I think they're usually more fun than people, though.

That sounds really pretty! My home country is hot and dry, so I didn't even get anywhere close to the sea until a few years ago. By the time I did, though, it was quite a thing to sea... [Yeah, he could not resist slipping that lame pun in there.] Nya ha ha!

More fun than people? How come? [It's hard to imagine, but then again, people can't fly.]

[To the crow.] --Uh. No offense or anything...

Yeah. It is pretty nice. And there's always a breeze blowing to turn the windmills. [He makes a turning motion with his hand, trying not to groan at the really awful joke.] So, you live in the desert?

Eh, I dunno, it just seems that way to me. People are too complicated, I guess. And sometimes they can be so boring! Like, "Henry, don't curse anyone!" or "Henry, stop shooting fireballs so close to your allies!" and stuff. That's just no fun. Animals never say that kinda stuff.

Well, there's a lot of desert in my home country, yeah. I haven't really lived there for a while, though.

[Asbel rubs the back of his neck after hearing the explanation.]

Well, it is true that some people can be pretty confusing and unreasonable. But wouldn't accidentally setting your allies on fire be a bad thing? The whole point of having them in the first place is to watch each other's backs, after all.

[His head tilts a little.]

Oh, I see! So...where else have you been living? Somewhere cool, I hope!

I'm pretty careful, though, so they wouldn't catch on fire! ...Well, not unless I wanted them to. But I usually don't!

[...Usually. Not always. That must be very comforting to hear.]

Nowhere in particular, actually. I've been in the army for ages now, so I'm basically always traveling. I guess the closest thing to an actual home I had was the Shepherds' barracks.

"Usually", huh?

[Well, a guy who can shoot fire and talk to things would definitely be useful in an army!] That's pretty cool. You must've seen all kinds of things! Our army doesn't travel too much, but then I guess they don't really need to.

Shepherds' barracks... Does that have something to do with the name of the ship?

It was pretty boring, actually. I barely got to fight at all until I switched sides. I mean, what's the point of being in the army if you don't get to fight, right?

Oh, yeah, it does! The ship was named after the Shepherds of my world. They're this group led by the ruler of Ylisse and it's meant to protect people and stuff. I joined them after they got involved in this big war!

Yeah, it would be kind of a let down not getting to fight at all. But if you didn't have to, that must mean the country's at peace. And that's not a bad thing!

[...Oh. Well, scratch that whole "peace" thing if there's some giant war happening.] So the ship and these people it was named after are there to protect people...

[He thought the whole sheep thing was lame before, but now it actually seems noble. Since it apparently has nothing to do with sheep and farmers after all.]

...That's what I want to do, too.

Oh, Plegia isn't peaceful at all! Far from it. They're pretty big on conquering and stuff. I still didn't get to be in any big fights, though! So I decided that was dumb and left them.

Huh, really? So do you wanna become a knight or something like that?

Oh... Yeah, that doesn't sound too friendly of them. I guess I wouldn't mind conquering if it ever came to that, as long as no one got hurt too bad.

[He perks up at the k-word.] Actually, I do! More than anything.

[Well. Almost anything, anyway.]

Nya ha, yeah, they're not big on friendliness!

Hm, I see! That's not a bad choice, being a knight always looked pretty cool to me! I actually know a few knights back home.

Really, you do?! What're they like?

And yeah, but not just that. Sure, knights are cool and everything, but they're smart and noble, too! And they look after their king and country and all the people living in different cities. They get to travel and sleep outside...

[He clenches his fist.] It's hard to put into words, but there's just something about knights, you know? Like they have a purpose they're totally dedicated to and motivated by - not something dumb like because it's what other people want or because they were born into it. But because they really, really believe in what they're doing and the people they're protecting by doing so.

Hm, well... They were all pretty different, but also similar in some ways. Like... really strong willed and big on knightly virtues and stuff. You know, honor, protecting people, that kind of thing. They can be kinda stubborn too, but I guess that goes with the whole strong willed thing!

Huuuh... You sound pretty enthusiastic about it! Hearing you talk about it almost makes me excited about it too, ha ha!

That's because I am! If it's something you really want, you're supposed to be excited about it, aren't you?

[And if talking about it pumps other people up, all the better!]

As long as you're not in the middle of being tested, anyway. Then you'd probably want to calm down and try to focus.

Well yeah, of course! Being excited is definitely a good thing.

I think if you're that determined to be a knight, you'll definitely become one. If you can keep that attitude up, anyway!

Wow, you really think so? In that case, I'm definitely gonna keep it up! [He clenches his fist.]

And if I do become a knight some day, I'll totally let you fight with me. Sound like a deal?

Really? Awesome! I'll definitely hold you to that!
