March Mingle

Who: The Sinewave and Triton's Mistress (Sinewave's Mistress? Triton's Sinewave?...)
Where: Gun Frontier, the ocean (headed south).
When: From 3/7 to 3/13-ish, possibly longer.
What: All-purpose mingle for the Mistress/Sinewave alliance at the start of March! Records the formal meeting of their crews and subsequent journey to the southern oceans, in pursuit of one of the Eight Captains (who they find in another log, stay tuned for that).
Warnings: Probably language and mild amounts of crazy, will update if needed.
Style: Whatever strikes your fancy!
Status: Open to crews of the Sinewave, Mistress, and any recruits they happen to get between 3/9 and 3/13.

It's a mingle! Please specify where you are (Gun Frontier, either of the ships involved on the open ocean) and when it happens in the header. Feel free to make subthreads for parties or other large gatherings if you'd like.

Enjoy!

Galley of the Sinewave

[Hachiken can almost always be found in the Galley, working hard on making food for everyone. It's basic, but delicious. With a few new people hanging around, he has to adjust his yields.

Since they have company, he decides it's finally time to make some pizza.]

[Grey Wardens have tremendous appetites and Elissa is no exception. Despite the fact that she isn't an overly large human by any stretch of the imagination, she can easily eat enough for three to four people her size. With her belly gnawing at her thanks to the delicious smells from below, the young woman follows her nose to the scent, her expression one of near bliss.]

What is that amazing smell?

[Hachiken has his hands wrist deep in dough, kneading it.]

I'm making pizza for dinner. You're smelling the yeast from the bread, or maybe the sauce on the stove.

[Have a Warden 'inspecting' your galley, Hachiken, as Elissa snoops around and follows her nose to find the scent that pulled her here. She leans over the sauce and softly inhales, her expression shifting to something almost reverent.]

Oh, this smells wonderful. Tis a sauce, you said? For what? What is pizza?

[Oh, look. There's cheese here. And is that an apple? Taking both of them, she begins to nibble, leaning one hip on his kneading surface as she awaits an answer.]

Yes it is! It's tomato based, but I put some spices in there. Pizza is a delicious food. It's base is bread with sauce on top of it and a variety of toppings. I have some sausage, some ham, fresh vegetables...I didn't make the cheese because I don't have the facilities, but I did make the sausage. It's not as good in this oven then a wood burning one, but I think you'll like it.

I look forward to trying it.

[Despite knowing better manners, Elissa says that with a big hunk of apple in the side of her mouth. Did I mention that she's hungry? She goes back to chewing and watching what the male is doing with the dough.]

How much will it make?

[personal profile] unlikelyfarmhand 2014-03-22 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
I figured six pizzas should be enough for everyone.

[He grabs a pastry cutter and cuts the ball of dough into six equal pieces.]

I learned to make pizza at school. My classmates had never really tried it before because where they live the pizza restaurants don't deliver. It's too remote, so...so I made them pizza.

It must be delicious, if you go to such trouble to share it with others. Do you need any help?

[*Crunch* There goes another bite from the apple. She also takes a nibble from the chunk of cheese she picked up, slowly chewing to enjoy the flavors. Still leaning against the work surface, she doesn't seem in any hurry to leave.]
unlikelyfarmhand: (Taking care of small creatures)

[personal profile] unlikelyfarmhand 2014-03-22 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It will be delicious, don't worry!

[He grins and takes a rolling pin to roll out the first ball.]

Hmmm, well...

[Hachiken is thinking.]

I think I have everything ready to go, so I guess not.
elissacousland: (youngwarden2)

[personal profile] elissacousland 2014-03-22 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[After swallowing the food in her mouth, Elissa grins at the young man.]

Do you mind, if I remain to watch you? I should like to see how this is done. Who knows - if we ever get to return home, perhaps I will be able to bring pizza to Ferelden thanks to your tutelage.
unlikelyfarmhand: (Making pizzas like a BOSS.)

[personal profile] unlikelyfarmhand 2014-03-22 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind! It's not too hard, really. If it was, I probably wouldn't be able to do it. [He laughs a little nervously.

Hachiken moves the rolled dough off to another side of the counter and continues rolling each ball out.]

What I did was make a crust. It's got a bit of salt, yeast, flour and water in it. Really really basic crust, but it will be really good when I'm done. The sauce has tomatoes and a variety of spices we've picked up here. You can taste it if you want. It should be a little sweet.
elissacousland: (eldanewhat)

[personal profile] elissacousland 2014-03-25 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[Elissa closed her eyes and inhaled, holding off on another bite from the apple. The smells in the galley really were tempting.]

I... shall wait.

[She grinned again at the cook.]

I fear that if I taste it, I might run off with the pot. Tis best for you to have sauce for your ... crust?

[The woman crunched another bite of the apple.]
unlikelyfarmhand: (Satisfied after a long day!)

[personal profile] unlikelyfarmhand 2014-03-26 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it'll be like a crust.

[Hachiken turns off the stove and carries the pot over to the counter, setting it down carefully. Then he begins spreading the sauce on the now rolled out dough.]

When I helped make this for my classmates, we must have made a hundred pizzas. It was crazy, but it was also really fun.
elissacousland: (youngwarden2)

[personal profile] elissacousland 2014-03-28 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
[When he moves the pot to the counter, Elissa abruptly stops leaning against it and turns to watch his movements as he spreads the sauce. She even backs up a step so not to be in Hachiken's way as he works.]

That is a lot of work! You were either feeding many others like yourself or a small group of Grey Wardens. We have large appetites.

[Though she's still nibbling on the apple, the woman's stomach audibly growls. That sauce smells good!]

unlikelyfarmhand: (Making pizzas like a BOSS.)

[personal profile] unlikelyfarmhand 2014-04-13 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it was at school. An Agricultural school at that. We eat a lot because of all the physical labour involved aside from just being teenagers.

[He begins spreading some diced up peppers, some cut up sausage and mushrooms over the sauce.]

I had a lot of help though. I was surprised it turned out well, I never made it before then.
elissacousland: (Default)

[personal profile] elissacousland 2014-04-19 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[Elissa steals a piece of mushroom and pops it into her mouth along with the apple, chewing it and then swallowing.]

It was a school for... farming?

[Curious.]

I have never heard of such a thing.
unlikelyfarmhand: (Making pizzas like a BOSS.)

[personal profile] unlikelyfarmhand 2014-04-19 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's a school for farming. In the time I live in, most people don't farm and the kids that do go to this school so they can learn about things like animal anatomy and how to monetize their farms, balance budgets and debts as well as the usual, basic skills.

[He's cutting up thick slabs of white cheese.]

I don't come from a farm. I went there because it's a boarding school and I had to get away.
elissacousland: (Default)

[personal profile] elissacousland 2014-04-19 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
If your people do not farm, then how do they eat? I understand that not all areas are suitable for growing things, but surely your home has some places fit for it?

[Someone is going to steal some of your cheese, Hachiken, and she's not even going to be subtle about it.]

Must you trade for food with other lands?
unlikelyfarmhand: (Default)

[personal profile] unlikelyfarmhand 2014-04-19 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
[He lays out the thick pieces of cheese over the pizza before pushing his glasses up his nose.]

In Japan, most of the farmland is in Hokkaido near the school. Some of them are family farms, but some of them are big industrial farms. Most people eat food that has been manufactured and processed in large quantities. The food produced there gets sent across the country and sometimes exported to other countries, while we export many things in. It's a global economy.
elissacousland: (Default)

[personal profile] elissacousland 2014-04-19 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[Industrial. Manufactured. Global Economy. Elissa is not lacking for an education, but her homeland is closer to England in the 1200s than modern day Japan, so those words might as well be jibberish to her.]

[Elissa chews slowly on her stolen cheese as she considers her reply.]

Meaning... that you trade with many other lands? I can see how that would be beneficial, but I admit that I do not understand half of what you said.

unlikelyfarmhand: (Default)

[personal profile] unlikelyfarmhand 2014-04-19 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! Sorry!

[He flushes lightly.]

Well, that's basically what it means. We trade with all kinds of other places so we have a broader selection in what you can buy at the supermarket. There's food that grows in our area, but different food that grows elsewhere. Because of trade, both are pretty available to anyone.
elissacousland: (Default)

[personal profile] elissacousland 2014-04-19 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Trade, I understand.

[She waggles what's left of her slice of cheese at him before popping it into her mouth and eating it.]

Since Highever was a coastal holding, we did quite a lot of trade with other lands through the port at Amaranthine - ah, not that you know where either of those places are located. But as the daughter of the Teryn, I studied history, trade, and stewardship as well as a vast array of other topics that might help me one day rule Highever.

We also sent a lot of fish inland to the Bannorn in exchange for their produce.
unlikelyfarmhand: (Taking care of small creatures)

[personal profile] unlikelyfarmhand 2014-04-19 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It's essentially the same idea, just on a very large scale. For a long time in our history Japan was secluded, but it's been awhile since people came to our shores and opened up trade. Now a lot of what we get comes from North America.
elissacousland: (Default)

[personal profile] elissacousland 2014-04-19 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[The Warden eyes the pizzas and then grins at Hachiken.]

What else must be done to these? I only ask lest we get caught up in a lively discussion of trade that my stomach will dislike.
unlikelyfarmhand: (Satisfied after a long day!)

[personal profile] unlikelyfarmhand 2014-04-19 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Right! Right! Sorry!

[Oops, so much for paying attention to his job. Hachiken goes over to check the oven. Then he pulls out what looks like a huge spatula and he goes to slide it under the first one.]

Just be careful for a moment that I don't hit you and lose the pizza.
