Sending a Message
Who: Spades & anyone who hops over
Where: The quickly ruining ashes of what once was a naval base + at sea with the Spades, Luffy, and anyone coming back with Logan and Rogue // AKA: THE SUN, THE MOON, AND THE STARS!
What: Coldly angry Marco lets all the navy men go free and makes sure they have enough supplies to sail with, but makes it clear he's burning the base down into the shape of a spade "to send a message"
Warnings: UH VIOLENCE? JUSTICE LECTURES? At least he's not feeling too bloody and murderous, but maybe that's worse, oops.
Status: Open!
See also this post and remember that Marco's usual reasons for holding in check (ie: Thatch, Nico Robin, Namur, Roxas) are gone or, in Marco's opinion more reasons to cut loose. Feel free to smack him upside the head, he won't retaliate.

[Stares a little longer.]
[There's no words for all of it.]
[His own frustration that he can't protect it. That he's not as strong as his father. His pure relief that someone worthwhile, no, someone better will have it. That it shows what Whitebeard wanted to see before he died. The shape of the future.]
[He wants to say his Pops would be pleased by that, because he would, but it didn't fit and he knew that wasn't why Straw Hat was doing it, and hell that was part of the point.]
[Marco looks up at the stars, silently asking his father for a little more guidance.]
You're not what I expected.
[He never was. He was almost, but then something would throw Marco off completely. As Ace's little brother, he was unsurprised how much Luffy and Ace were alike, except Luffy was more like Garp and Roger both. But as the bearer of the hat, the carrier of Ace's will, he was something else entirely again.]
I wish I could offer you better help, but you probably know better than I do the struggles we now face.
[Shanks made a bet for the future. Was this the future he gambled for? Or was it just that he trusted however Straw Hat's path led would be for the better?]
I was there right after Roger died, eh? Me, Jozu, Pops, Teach and some others.
[His eyes narrow and voice softens, but only in volume. In tone it gets harder.] I will never get that image out of my head.
The slavers were everywhere, yoi. Kids couldn't go out into the streets without getting kidnapped, and even King Neptune and his soldiers couldn't secure any lasting peace. I have never hated pirates as much as that day.
[He leans his head back against the wood and looks up again.] Pops was grooming Ace to be his successor, you know? Because Ace has the same dream, and Pops saw a lot of potential in him. He asked me about all the islands we were protecting back then. Because if Ace wanted to go for Raftel, it was going to be a lot harder to keep those things safe or watched.
I still don't know how to take it now. I'm not helping Ace's dream, and I still can't keep all the islands safe.
[Monotone deadpan, no emotion on the surface.] Then again, I can't even keep my brother from being kidnapped by slavers either. That's why he joined us. That's why he came to the surface, to the New World. To be a fishman in a crew that would kick all slavers in the teeth. [Whether Namur let himself be captured to free the others, or just because they got the drop on him, it's all the same to Marco. Marco failed to protect him, and that was the problem.]
Give 'em hell, eh?

[he didn't really know about the past so much. And it was the past. Couldn't do anything about that so what difference did it make? He does listen a little though and snorts]
There is there and here is here and mixing 'em is too confusing. [he shifts to look at him, sitting on the edge of the crows nest and propping up a leg slantwise across it]
Listen, Marco, here Ace is the captain so it's simple. If your dream is to help him just follow. Ace has gotta do his own dream and he'll just get annoyed if you try to interfere.
Back at home, you're the captain now so you gotta do what you want. Whatever it is. You wanna protect places, go protect 'em. You're gonna have to fight me for Fishman Island, though, cuz I already said it's mine.
Or if you don't wanna be the captain, let 'em go. [and it would probably be really hard. He knew it was hard on Ray. To lose all the nakama but you couldn't do things half way. Either do it or don't.
And then, quieter:]
But I don't want you to let 'em go. I wanna see you guys in the New World. I wanna see you be a captain and you guys figure out what's out there for you now. It's what the old man would have wanted, right?

[Aye... and no.]
Pops would want us all to be free and go our own way. That's why I'm taking Ace sailing the stars. Until he's satiated enough he never wants for anything else. [And Ace was a demanding kind of guy, so that would be forever, as far as Marco knew, but if anyone had the time for that, it was Marco.]
Back in our world... I might take you up on that fight. Someday. But it'll be on my own terms, no one else's.
[That was really what pissed Marco off. He was almost completely surrounded in checks. Not in this world. Here he was usually so free he could everything and anything he wanted, and there didn't seem to be any dead-ends, so he never had to stop flying except to briefly rest. But in the New World, in the New Era that wasn't Whitebeard's, that was without Ace and Thatch, where Blackbeard had the darkness and earthquake devil fruits. Back there what choices did he have?]
Right now it's just enough for me to survive. If I had my way, that wouldn't be a priority. That wouldn't have been my priority in Marineford either.
But we're not the same style of captains. You sound more like Shanks or Roger like that, but I'd rather be one like my Pops. [If at all. Marco wasn't willing to disband them though. It wouldn't keep the crew safe, it would definitely endanger the islands, and no. He was going to punch back hard against every god damn rookie and Blackbeard, and Kaidou, and anyone else foolish enough to think he was only strong from his father. They didn't realize that Whitebeard's strength was his family. His family were damned strong even without him.] My selfishness would be to kill Blackbeard. But he is not our only foe and my brothers need me for more than just him.
Whatever the new era holds, I don't expect to like it. But --
[Marco, Mars, god of war. It all comes back to him again and makes him want to curl up into a ball of a phoenix in Robin or Thatch's laps.]
[He didn't believe in fate, not like Blackbeard did, not at all.]
[But it was too much of a stretch to dismiss it utterly as well.]
But I can't say yet what the future will hold. What I want is to be here now with all my brothers. I won't waste it.

He won't worry about it. He won't worry about any of it right now because Ace is here right now. With his nakama and people that care about him and maybe back at home he'll meet Marco again and see how things are going and maybe they can fight and maybe they can party]
I won't waste it either. [not] But I wanna help if I can.

Thanks kiddo.
Show Ace the status of your dream and courage in the future, eh?
That's what he wanted most.

Ace isn't so different from the old man, eh. So long as he sees you staying strong and happy, he'll know you're unbeatable.

1/2
Pops was.
Do you know one of the things Roger said at his funeral?
2/2
You were pretty out of it I think, when Pops fell, but he said the same thing. He said One Piece is real, Blackbeard isn't the man Roger's waiting for, and that the World Government is just terrified of the changes finding One Piece will bring when it is found by the person carrying all that will.
You gave Ace the will to live and make it as far as he did. Now he just needs to see you'll make it the rest of the way.
Maybe it's not people that are unbeatable, but the convictions that send them to sea in the first place. Because it's like a crew. Even if one man falls, there's another one to take his place, and keep carrying the dream forward.
