Giant Spiders Oh My

Who: the current Hazmats
Where: sailing to Manahana-lia Island, then on the island

What: sailing as fast as they can to rescue Cynthia, and the rescue thereof. They'll try to save time by jumping through Empieza but...

The minute the scream came though his journal, Gan Ning was moving. There was no time to waste fiddling around, they had to set sail to find Cynthia before it was too late. He tore through any maps and information they had on the ship, looking for anything that suggested spiders. Her clue, the spider-webs, meant that was all he had to go on. Fortunately, other pirates around the docks totally knew which island that was, and aside from impressing on him the "don't go there" part of the legend, told him where to find it.

It did seem odd that no matter where they were, if they set sail for Isla Empieza, they'd make it there in a day or so instead of weeks. Gan Ning relied on that, even though he didn't do more than skim through the harbor before setting a new course for Manahana-lia in the far west of the land. Hopefully weather wouldn't be against them. They had a long way to go and didn't have Wan there to guide the winds in their favor.

Spiders, the other pirates said. There'd be large spiders and his crew would be killed. Nope, Xingba would not let anyone die if he could help it. But that meant they'd have to fight. Roxas needed to heal so he could guard the ship, but everyone else, well...

Let's hope they make it on time.

Yeah. It was a really fancy prison...a fake world. I got captured and put there and then everything about me was just gone.

[He isn't sure how to feel about that, it makes him very uneasy.]

I got my memories back at the end. I just broke their things and all of a sudden it was all there. It was...

[Headache inducing. Overwhelming.]

And then I came here right after that and I still think things are mixed up. Maybe not in order, the things I can remember I mean. I've always had a hard time remembering new things because when I started I was completely empty. Axel always took care of me though.

[That's why Lea is the best person. It might explain a few reasons why Roxas seems like he's got so many problems with memory.]

Huh. Well, then. No wonder you got trouble with remembering.

Dunno if there's anything I can do, but you kids are my boys, now. Say the word and I'll do everything I can.

Thanks. I really don't know either but maybe if I think of something.

[He seems to mull it over carefully but shrugs in the end.]

Yeah no clue. Do you like ice cream?

[Time to get to the really important questions!]

Ain't had it. They don't have that stuff where I come from. But I got Gaius workin' on figurin' out how to make it.

[He gasps, eyes wide. Even he had ice cream.]

You HAVE to try it! It is only the best food ever!

I will, when we get some! Poke Gaius about it, he said he'd ask those guys you told me about from the Straw Hat crew.

[He grins at that and nods.]

Okay! I had some when we went to the fair that one time too. That was really fun they had candy that looked like a cloud and some fried stuff with lots of sugar. There's all kinds of really good food, but Lea says I should eat more real food.

[Pfft, what does Lea know about nutrition?]

When we were at that other place with all the food around he fed me some kind of fried fish thing. It was okay but it's not candy.

Course, he's right. Real food is good, man! You liked that eel we had for lunch, didn't ya?

I don't mind the turtle-boys makin' their favorite all the time but even pizza is too much for me sometimes. I ain't used to all that cheese.

[Eel, eel...did he have eel for lunch? He's quiet as he thinks about it and then he remembers and he brightens.]

Oh yeah! I did like that! It had a good sauce on it right?

I like lots of other things, but ice cream is still the best. Lea feeds me sandwiches sometimes. Uhhhh...

[What else has he tried? Many things but none of them really come to mind.]

I don't know, I eat stuff all the time now. When we were in the Organization we had ice cream every day.

[A very nutritionally balanced life he's had.]

Heh! It's a good thing Lea's in charge of the kitchen now. [points] You want that shoulder to heal up faster, you gotta eat good. Lots of meat and fish.

I can cook too you know! I can make sandwiches as good as Lea!

[He can do other things, he just needs a reminder.]

When we were on the Moon, Lea and I cooked together because...I don't know why. Thatch said so. He told me to learn to cook with Lea. And the other cook taught me how to do a chicken thing but he likes to kick me in the head and I don't like that.

Do you really think it will make my shoulder better? What else will make it better?

[What else do you know Gan Ning?]

[grins a bit] Sandwiches ain't cookin', you don't turn on the fire. Oven. Whatever it is. Not to knock it, though, both you guys make good stuff. But I don't claim to be a cook even though I can start a fire and stick some fish on a stick over it.

Hmm...well, good food and rest. The medics always try to keep us off the field when we're injured but also try to stop me from drinkin'. But you don't drink, so that ain't a problem. Hm, sleep lots? Maybe?

We did other stuff. Lea knows about it.

[But left alone he would probably fix them sandwiches.]

Resting is really boring! I would drink, but Lea doesn't like that. He wasn't very happy when I drank lots before.

[Marco let him get drunk and Lea seemed not to like that very much.]

Mmm, I don't really like sleeping. What if I don't wake up?

What? C'mon, kid, you gotta sleep. Sleep is good. Gets you all revived for the next day, and I'm pretty sure I heard that you heal better if you get sleep. It'd take a hell of a lot for you not to wake up, like a real illness or being close to death anyway...

I don't know, maybe I don't need to sleep and I just do it because someone told me to!

[That's probably untrue.]

Oh, no, that's not true. One time I fell asleep for a really long time. It was almost a whole month! Isn't that crazy? I wasn't sick or anything, I just fell asleep.

It only happened once though. That's when I got my seashell collection. I woke up and it was there!

[Hmmm, sleeping is kind of weird.]

But it's been okay since then. I don't know. I just don't like it. I dream a lot of weird things.

....yeah, kiddo, you gotta sleep regularly. That way you don't go and go until you fall asleep for a month. I'm sure Lea's on that, but yanno. Captain would like to see ya healthy, too.

Can't do much about dreams, though. They happen. You just gotta remember that they're just dreams, can't hurt ya.

Are you sure? I was sleeping before then, I just don't know why I fell asleep.

[Yet another mystery.]

I don't think they can, they are just weird. They're not really scary or anything. I dream of an island a lot. It's really sunny there. I don't think I've ever been though.

Not like an island here, huh?

[dutifully saying nothing about his own dreams...usually filled with battle, sometimes snake demons]

No, I don't think so. I think it's Sora's island.

[Whatever that island is called, that world even. He's sure he hasn't been there.]

It's really nice. There's a beach there! And um, a cave I think and a bridge...it's always hot when I dream of it and they used to play with these wooden swords or race around I think!

[Roxas nods after a moment's thought.]

I want to go sometime. I want to see that beach! Did you know Lea and I went to the beach before? It was really really awesome!

Oh, good, so you did. There's lots of beaches on lots of islands 'round here, seems like. But not that beach, so... [shrug]

I didn't mean that beach.

[He had missed a word or two.]

Lea and I went to a beach here and it was really fun. He's a cheater though, he always wins at racing because he's so much bigger than me. I'm going to get really tall one day and win!

[A solid statement of fact as far as Roxas is concerned.]

And I shoved him in the water. It was really really fun. I always wanted to go to a beach with him!
