Giant Spiders Oh My
Who: the current Hazmats
Where: sailing to Manahana-lia Island, then on the island
When: August 27 through September 5th
What: sailing as fast as they can to rescue Cynthia, and the rescue thereof. They'll try to save time by jumping through Empieza but...
Warnings: spiders. Violence, talk of death, Gan Ning's mouth
Style: whatever you want, don't mind the setup
Status: closed to Hazmat crew
The minute the scream came though his journal, Gan Ning was moving. There was no time to waste fiddling around, they had to set sail to find Cynthia before it was too late. He tore through any maps and information they had on the ship, looking for anything that suggested spiders. Her clue, the spider-webs, meant that was all he had to go on. Fortunately, other pirates around the docks totally knew which island that was, and aside from impressing on him the "don't go there" part of the legend, told him where to find it.
It did seem odd that no matter where they were, if they set sail for Isla Empieza, they'd make it there in a day or so instead of weeks. Gan Ning relied on that, even though he didn't do more than skim through the harbor before setting a new course for Manahana-lia in the far west of the land. Hopefully weather wouldn't be against them. They had a long way to go and didn't have Wan there to guide the winds in their favor.
Spiders, the other pirates said. There'd be large spiders and his crew would be killed. Nope, Xingba would not let anyone die if he could help it. But that meant they'd have to fight. Roxas needed to heal so he could guard the ship, but everyone else, well...
Let's hope they make it on time.
[ooc: info on the island is here - make and date your own sailing threads but we'll hit the island about the 3rd or 4th and there'll be a fight log for that]

[but before he can even take a step, he can feel the tremor of something large crossing the floor toward them. Ning freezes in place and looks over his shoulder to find Cynthia's true captor.
Holy shit look at the size of that thing.]
....oh hell.
no subject
[Lea looks up at the spider, absolutely horrified.]
They aren't allowed to be that big! I hope you have a plan!
[He's bad at plans. Please be good at plans.]
no subject
[he has no idea whether this thing is poisonous, or how big its...no, there's the fangs. Pincers. Whatever spiders have. Well, shit. Gan Ning just grits his teeth and charges, hacking at its legs and trying to avoid said large pointy things.]
no subject
[That's not anything like a plan!
He throws his chakrams (what else is there to do??) but they're not exactly made to cut through an exoskeleton that huge. He's not even sure how much his fire is going to do.]
Don't big things like that usually have a weakness somewhere?!
no subject
He skids to a stop back beside Lea, because hacking at the legs isn't working and he almost got thrown into the wall. Only by using another musou burst did he avoid it, but now he's too exhausted to do it again.]
Yeah...somethin'. There's gotta be a soft spot somewhere. The belly, maybe...
[or the eyes, but those are extremely well-guarded right now]
no subject
[It has a mouth in the way and that thing is freaking scary looking.]
Why can't it have a target on it or something...
no subject
[he's at a total loss. 'Hit it until it dies' is the only real strategy he can think up by himself.]
Look...maybe if one of us can distract it long enough, the other one can get around behind it...
no subject
[Not that it really matters which of them does which, really. They're probably screwed either way.]
no subject
[Captain doesn't mind potentially sacrificing himself for his crew, but realistically, Lea can probably provide a better distraction.
The spider princess looms ever closer, clicking her pincers menacingly]
no subject
[The front half's not much better, so it's not like he's getting the better half of the deal.]
no subject
[he crouches, waiting for his opportunity, and then dashes off to the side, out of the range of the feet so he can circle around. As long as the fireball hits before the spider decides to follow the ringing bells instead of the spiky-haired guy...]
no subject
OVER HERE, CREEPY!
[He lights a chakram on fire and waves it back and forth. This had better be over quick.]
no subject
He doesn't have any bursts of speed left in him, but he can do this. Get in close, follow up behind it while it goes lunging after the fire that hurt it, and give River Master a couple of twirls around his wrist to wind up before dashing at the big, bulbous rear end and giving it a slash.
...or he would have, had the spinnerets not shot milky webbing at him. Gan Ning rolls to try to avoid it, but comes up in a crouch with his sword webbed securely to his side.]
Aw, hell!
no subject
[Geez, can it get any worse?]
Shake it off! I can't do this forever!
no subject
[it's pretty stuck there. This spider is the one that created the web that can hold Cynthia up, after all. At least the edge of the blade is turned out against some of the threads, but all the wiggling in the world can't completely rip them free.]
Keep tryin' to barbecue it, buy me some time!
[a couple of strands come loose. At the very least, he should be able to get the sword free enough to shift it to his other hand. It'll take a minute, though.]
no subject
My magic's gonna run out eventually, so no barbecues here! I hope you like your spider lightly seared!
no subject
It's super-effective! The spider lets out an ear-splitting screech as she rears up, flailing six of her legs in anguish and driving her body even further down onto the sword. It's very gross from where Gan Ning is stuck to the floor, though.]
no subject
[He tosses another fireball at the spider's face, which doesn't do much for the screeching, but it at least makes her fall forward a little.]
You okay back there? That was beyond icky!
no subject
Just...finish it! Kill it before it comes around for more!
[although it looks like the big spider is about to pull a Shelob and go running away to lick her wounds somewhere...]
no subject
[What?! He was the distraction guy! Ah, dammit...]
You owe me one!
[He lights both chakrams and throws them. This had better work, because there's not a whole lot left he can do.]
no subject
Gan Ning just sort of flops to a seat, dropping his sword and flicking spider guts off his free hand as best he can.]
Ugh. Can I owe you two? I'm stuck to the ground.
[he'll pick up his sword and use it to free his other arm in a minute, he needs to catch his breath]
no subject
[He plants his hands on his hips and looks around the cavern. It's a giant mess, but at least there don't seem to be any more spiders. Small blessings.]
no subject
[as he slowly hacks at the spiderwebbing to free himself without hurting himself.]
She ain't gonna like touchin' the spider guts any more than you do.
no subject
I could still cut her down...have to time it right if I'm supposed to catch her, too, since you're all gooey.
[He paces back and forth beneath the giant web, trying to size it up and figure out the proper angle.]
You might wanna be on standby.
no subject
[The webbing glueing him to the floor is stubborn and he doesn't want to hack off his shoe. At long last, though, he's able to move again, and reluctantly stows his sword even though he's not sure they're done fighting yet. He needs his hands free if he has to jump in to help catch.]
