Into the storm
Who: Hazardous Materials with special guest star Draco Malfoy
Where: the ship, and then Eternal Bliss (oh joy)
When: November 1-5 at sea, 6-? on land
What: sailing log, and then shenanigans on wedding island
Warnings: let me know if there are any
Style: as you please
Status: closed to "who"
[As soon as the sun did not rise on the 1st, like others had suggested it would, Gan Ning wanted off Isla Empieza. He put out the call to his crew - get on the ship, leave no man behind. Or woman, Cynthia.
The storm hit while they were two days out from the island. It would take all hands on deck to keep the Nightfury from capsizing, good thing they have a couple of solid dragons to keep things in check. Just watch out for Gaius and his fiery pendant! By the time the storm blows out in the wee hours on the 4th, the charts put them drifting near to Eternal Bliss. Are the residents still pissed at pirates for what Kodachi did? Who cares, they need to land to make repairs. And maybe score some treasure, if anyone wants to go through the marriage requirement.

[Toe flex, wiggle. Ohmygod she loves toes, they are the cutest things and they can pick up things and are pretty neat in sand! She moved to lean her elbows on bent knees now, her chin in her hands and watching him.]
Wow, if you can ever get a hold of some, you should really do it. Maybe some time you can go deep sea swimming with me. I could show you a lot of things, even here. There’s nothing better than the feeling of floating through water. I enjoy walking on land more than I thought I could, but I do love my home waters.

[OH, FOR THOSE DAYS...
He thinks, ignoring the fact that he can do basically all of his chores with magic.]
But I suppose it's hard to have those sort of luxuries in this world.
[Draco watches her sprawl out, looking a little amused. She reminds him a little of Pansy that way, managing to look comfortable wherever she goes. It takes him longer to get to that level, especially on a new ship like this with people he doesn't know very well yet. So he probably looks a bit stiff compared to her.]
I could ask Miss Margie for some gillyweed probably. She seems to have most everything, and I wouldn't mind trying it. It sounds like flying, being able to have that sort of freedom in the water. Sort of. Have you ever been? I know the dragons can fly.

[She relaxes easy enough. She hasn’t learned not to. And having legs to move around? It’s so COOL. So yeah, she relaxes. Also she has faith that Xingba wouldn’t allow someone on the ship that wasn’t safe, so she’s already assuming Draco is okay.]
She’s the one with the shop with everything in it, right? That would be amazing. If you get some, let me know. We can go swimming for a hour or so! [but her excitement stalled a moment, looking up at the sky] Oh, no.... I haven’t been flying yet. Fins to the sea, feet to the ground. I’m not sure on flying.
Wait... [looking back to him, surprised] You can fly?
no subject
I can! Not on my own, of course, Wizards have never managed that, but yes! Flying is brilliant. Hang on—
[He sets his book aside and reaches for his satchel, sticking his arm in and rooting around. Then after a moment or so, he pulls out his broomstick -- which looks as though it never should have fit in the satchel in the first place, since it's much too long.]
I use this. This one isn't the best model, but I thought I shouldn't get on my crew's bad side by spending half our money on a racing broom.
[Draco holds it out toward her, so she can take it if she likes. It won't do much in her hands, though, unfortunately. Then he tilts his head curiously.]
You've mentioned a Kingdom twice now. Are you royalty of some kind?
no subject
A broom? But we have one of these on deck too! For cleaning. [She learned about that one already. Huh. How weird.] Cleaning helps you fly? And how did you get this in that bag? It's so small...
[You sir, have her full attention. You're pretty fantastic and interesting. Huh? What? Oh... she blinked, then smiled.]
Right, my father. He's king of the seas back home. King Triton. I haven't really met anyone who knows him here though.
no subject
[He's still just over here grinning, because yaaay, magic talk! Though he looks a little proud of himself, too, as he holds up the bag.]
It's neat, right? It has an Undetectable Extension Charm on it. I only just recently got it right, that was a hard bit of magic to work out. It means I can keep all sorts of things in here.
[He nods toward the broom.]
Like that. It's not a normal broom, you see. Not one you'd use for cleaning. It flies!
[Then he pushes himself to his feet.]
Would you like to see?
no subject
[she's all grins now, AND his magic talk. The bag, the broom! It's all so cool and exciting to her.]
It is neat. It's like it's bigger on the inside. You did it yourself? So you know magic?
[Ug, gross, Draco. You can't impress her more. At least not until you do...]
You can make it fly.... yes, I'd love to see that! [she said, moving to her feet a bit shakily at first, getting her footing again and fixing her skirt, looking at the broom curiously, waiting to see a broom fly...]
no subject
I consider myself well read, though I'm not sure I've ever seen your name show up in relation to him.
[His smile turns into something that's a bit more smirk-like. In a teasing, trying-to-be-flirty sort of way.]
Which is a pity. But I've met you now, at least, so I can't complain. Here—
[He takes the broom back and sets it on the ground, then straightens again and holds his hand out over it.]
I do know magic. My whole world is magic. Up!
[Annnd whoosh, there it goes, rising quickly off the ground to slap against his palm. He steadies it briefly and them removes his hand altogether, leaving the broom floating in midair.]
Because I'm a Wizard. See? Flying broom.
no subject
[She gave back the broom and didn’t comment, letting the fact that his whole world was magical take over for the bashfulness. a grin spreading on her face again.]
How is that possible? [and then UP and the broom moved up and was held. then hovered on its own. Her eyes were huge and she bounced, stepped around it, and reached out to very carefully run a hand under the broom, then over it, as if looking for strings.]
Draco! That’s amazing!
no subject
It's just how my world works. We've always had magic. It's something people are born with, and then we go to school to learn how to properly use it. Much like Muggles, I suppose, just more exciting.
[And better.]
Magic is everywhere where I'm from. In the Wizarding community. Brooms like this one have various spells and charms built right into them.
[He throws a leg over the broom, then, settling onto it and kicking off the ground just slightly so that he's hovering a foot or two in the air.]
no subject
[She crouched a moment to look under the broom, then stood, bouncing once when he explained about magic and mentioned muggles and charms and everything.]
I can’t believe a broom can let you fly. Wizards must be amazing people. [you know she’s going to poke the ships broom later, in private, and giggle.]
[As he got on it she moved back a bit, hands behind her bare back and leaning forward a bit, as if to say she won't touch, but she was still looking.]
It really works! And you can actually fly about, like a bird?
no subject
[Lazily circles the broom around her.]
I can fly better than a bird. Faster. Trust me, you think floating through water is brilliant, but there's nothing quite like going into a nosedive on your broom and then pulling up at the last second. It's bloody exhilarating.
[He stops the broom in front of her again.]
Shall I take you for a quick ride? Er.
[Eyes her suddenly. It was one thing when she was a mermaid wearing the shells, that didn't seem at all...untoward. But now that she looks like a human standing there in her undergarments, it somehow feels a bit scandalous. Draco blushes, averting his eyes and clearing his throat.]
...Though, it'd probably be best if you weren't wearing a, ah...skirt. While on the broom.
[Also a shirt, or perhaps proper robes that button up all the way and don't show an inch of skin. Ahahahahaaaa.]
I can turn that into something else, if you'd like.
no subject
[When he made comment about her clothing, she blinked, looking down. They weren't shells, but a bikini top, at least. She’d learned about them from another island. Still, it might be cold up there, huh. her hands ran down over her hips, looking down at the skirt. She was more covered than she was when it was just a fin... so she didn’t get it, but...]
You can change what I’m swearing?
[magic must be so much fun. She looked up, curious faced, head tilted and hands out.] If not, I bought some things, but... but can you really change it?
no subject
[He pulls his wand out and points it at her, concentrating for a moment and then, with a few swish and flick motions, her clothes begin to change. The skirt morphs swiftly into a pair of black pants, and then her bikini top stretches and grows, covering her stomach and extending down over her arms. A cape poofs into existence out the back of it, growing in length until it nearly touches the deck.
When Draco's done, Ariel will have a brand new Quidditch uniform on! ...In Slytherin green, though. Obviously. And without any shin guards or pads or any of the extra stuff. No boots, either, but she doesn't need them.
He examines her briefly, scratching his temple with his wand.]
Hmm. I apologize if the size isn't quite right -- I'm doing it by sight, and I'm hardly a tailor.
[Plus trying to measure her would just get awkward.]
no subject
Ohmygosh! That’s so neat!
[she bounced twice, clapped a few times, and spun around, playing with the fabric and how it moved.]
Draco! That’s really amazing! And you did it with just a stick of wood.
[then, simmering down a bit, she came closer and looked excited about this, but quizzical] So I can really fly with you?
no subject
It's called a wand, actually. [Still amused, though.] It helps channel my magic. And I wouldn't have asked you if I didn't mean it.
[He holds his hand out for her to take.]
You can climb on the back. It's more comfortable than it might look, I promise, the broom has a Cushioning Charm on it. And, er, make sure to hold on. To me.
no subject
[at the hand held out she bit her lip, but then moved to take the hand for help, and did as said, She climbed up on behind him, and surprisingly, it didn't feel like sitting on a broom!]
[She looked surprised, but carefully slide her hands to either side of him, fingers curling a bit in his clothing. She stayed in close, looking over to realize her toes aren't touching deck. this was already a lot.]
Okay. This is real neat...
no subject
Isn't it, though?
[He waits until she's settled before taking the broom higher into the air. Up, up, up, the ship gradually shrinking below them.]
I'll take it slow, but let me know if you want to go back down. Or if I should speed up.
[He checks her hold on him, making sure she's not going to slip off the back of the broom or anything (and blushing a bit again, just because), and then he takes off through the air, keeping an easy, smooth pace as he flies her across the water.]
no subject
[But then they started to move up. Up. Uuup. her eyes widening at that, then turning into the back of his shoulder, her arms snaked around him middle fully now to hold on a wee bit tighter. Okay. This is the highest up she's ever been!]
Ohmygosh...
[She took in a deep breath and held it, and once she felt they were move forward, she... peeked out over his shoulder, then lifted her head more, looking out at the ocean and the island and the small ship. Her fingers curled a moment, then he would feel her relax a bit more now. No longer clinging in a harder grip.]
Oh my Gosh! It's...
no subject
It's amazing, Draco! [she giggled softly, grinning out at the world.] We're so high up! [and could go higher, she just didn't think about that yet.]
no subject
[He knows from experience that he won't be able to go too far from the ship...for some reason. But he likes flying over the ocean more than flying over land, so he takes the broom as far as it will go. After a bit, he dips the nose of the broom down to bring them back closer to the waves again -- but it's a gradual decline, nothing crazy, he just wants to zip through the sea spray for a moment or two before shooting up into the sky again.]
Flying at night is pretty brilliant, too. Or sunset.
no subject
You mean it gets better than this? [she laughed, her hold getting closer as she relaxed into it. One arm slipping away to hold out into the air, like a birds wing, but not the other. She wanted to make sure she didn’t fall off.]
I wonder if this is what it feels like when Scuttle flies! I couldn’t even imagine a sunset this high up! Wait, I bet you can touch the stars from up here, huh. [Oh sweetheart, you need to learn about stars sometime. They seem to float in the deep sky is all.]
no subject
[And to demonstrate, he speeds up a little, leaning closer to the broom. Her comments have him barking out a startled laugh, but then again, she is a mermaid. They probably don't learn a whole lot about astronomy.]
Stars aren't something you can touch, actually. But they're lovely to look at. My name comes from one of the constellations! I could show you sometime. [There's a beat, and then:] Who's Scuttle?
[Because that's an odd name. So many odd names on this ship...]
no subject
Really? You were named after a... a...--what’s a constellation? [yes indeed, show her some time. He just thinks they are pretty floaty things.]
Scuttle is a friend back home! he’s a Seagull who is very smart on human things. Hey... [she asked, her one hand not gripped around him tapped his shoulder and she peeked over at him a bit more] How fast can you go?
no subject
[Maybe it's like Potter and snakes. Perhaps there's a seagull language. Hm. ...Moving on!]
Constellations are patterns the stars make. They're supposed to look roughly like...whatever they're named. Draco looks like a dragon, for instance. Although...that's in my world. I forgot there are different stars here.
[He slows to a stop, letting the broom hover in midair and looking over his shoulder at Ariel. Who is very close. Her face is just right there, and Draco flushes again, before clearing his throat and slapping on a smirk.]
How fast? Hang on—
[And once again, he makes sure her grip is good and tight before leaning forward again and taking off. They shoot across the sky, the wind rushing past them, and Draco throws them into a couple barrel rolls, as well, just because they're fun.
After he levels off again, without slowing down, he shouts back at her:]
Still okay??
