Roxas On The Ship

Roxas was confused.

This in itself was not that unusual, however it was different. Everything he worried about just days ago seemed to be less of a problem now that he's found himself in a new, somewhat hostile world. He met Riku and followed him to a ship, and today he was just hanging out, trying to get a feel for the place, and maybe unscramble the mess that was his memories.

In the morning, he can be found sitting on the railing overlooking the sea. Roxas looks content doing so, he had a fascination with the water.

In the afternoon, he can be found in the galley getting a snack, or perhaps down below deck, checking out his room and pacing between it and the steps so he can remember where it is.

In the evening, he can be found on deck on his back, staring at the stars.

[Lea reaches up and swats at Roxas' head.]

Don't make that face. It's my name. I didn't choose it.

You didn't?

[Roxas blinks at him, a little confused.]

Who picked it? Was it Xemnas?

What?! No! My parents named me Lea. Xemnas is the one who stuck the X in all our names when we became Nobodies.

[But then the very concept of "parents" might be alien to Roxas. He hadn't seen any in that simulation the kid had gotten shoved in and that was the closest he'd ever had to a normal life. It wasn't like they could offer him a proper childhood in the Organization.]

Parents?

[Roxas pauses as he's thinking about it. He's not sure he's heard that term before. At least, not that he can remember. When would it have come up?]

What's that?

[Yup. Should have seen that one coming. This is a whole can of worms that he's really not prepared to open right now. He can almost hear the deluge of questions that are going to follow and one thing he's never, EVER wanted to hear in his life is "Hey Axel, where do babies come from?"]

You know, maybe you should ask Riku about it since he likes telling you things. I bet he knows a lot about it.

[Take that, Riku.]

But you're the one that said it! You know what that is!

[Roxas pouts a little bit, crossing his arms.]

[Argh, not the pout. He's going to have to say something. Once the pout comes out, it's all over.]

Okay, long story short, most of us didn't just poof into existence as teenagers. We started out as babies and our parents raised us and took care of us as we grew up. All other questions can be directed to Professor Riku.

[He waves his hand, hoping to signal an end to this line of questioning.]

Axel! [Roxas whines at him a little.]

That doesn't tell me anything. Where did the babies come from? Were you a baby? What are your parents like? How come they named you? Do I have parents?

[It's such a nice try Lea.]

One thing at a time, geez! Sora has parents, but that's the closest you come. It's parents' job to name their baby and mine were [Are? Damn.] okay, I guess.

[A beat.]

And we are NOT getting into where babies come from right now.

[PLEASE let that be enough.]

Really? Sora has parents? [Roxas doesn't have any memories relating to them, neither his nor Sora's.]

Why not? Is it a secret?

Yup. A grown-up secret. Little kids like you aren't allowed to know.

[That's...not untrue.]

Hey, I'm not a little kid!

[Lea rolls over so that his back is to Roxas and does his best to sound flat and uninterested.]

Wow, really? I guess I totally missed something.

[heartismyown]

Hmph.

[There's a pause, but Roxas doesn't like to be ignored by Lea so he pokes him in the back. Repeatedly.]

Lea. You didn't answer all my questions.

[by_heart]

OW! Hey! Answer store is closed. Stop poking me!

[He reaches back and grabs and Roxas' arm and yanks on it. This isn't exactly how he'd expected things to get back to some sort of normalcy between them, but he'll take it. It's kind of a relief to be able to set all the heartache aside and just mess with the kid for a while.]

Wah! [Roxas falls against his back and gives him a bemused look.]

But you always answer my questions.

Not the one about where babies come from. I draw the line at that one.

[He mimes drawing a line in the air, then throws his arm over his face.]

You wore me out. I'm done. Go on without me. Or watch your stars or something. No more babies.

But that's not fair! How am I supposed to know if you don't tell me?

[Roxas glares at him, crossing his arms again.]

Fine, I won't ask about babies anymore. You didn't answer my other questions.

[Lea raises an eyebrow. This is the most persistent he can remember Roxas being. Well, either that or it's just harder to beat a hasty retreat, either physically or metaphorically. He didn't answer those other questions for a good reason, but he's not sure if even getting up and walking away is going to put Roxas off of them.]

I told you I was done answering questions. We've got plenty of time, Roxas. No need to rush.

[Roxas sighs a little bit and drops his hand.]

Okay. [If they even had time, he's just not sure.]

I won't ask anymore questions.

Ask them tomorrow. You have a whole boat full of people to ask, too. Go make new friends.

[That would be good for him. And, as strange as it sounds, it's a little selfish of Lea to be asking something like that, but he doesn't want to be the only one who remembers Roxas as a person. He may be his best friend, but it's better if he doesn't try to keep him to himself.]

A girl told me there's lots of people to be friends with, but I don't remember her name. Do you want to make friends with me too?

[Roxas leans back on his hands, looking up at the sky again.]

I'm already your best friend, dummy. Or do you mean go with you when you make your friends, because that's a no. You need to do that yourself.

[If Roxas isn't going to pester him anymore, it's probably safe to roll back over and have a look at the sky himself, so that's what he does.]

The second one. Why? I don't know how to do it! I mean, I think you made friends with me.

[Roxas tries to remember. He doesn't remember befriending Xion.]

Just talk to people and get to know them. Ask them your questions, see what they say. It's really not that hard.

[It especially won't be for Roxas, since he shares that quality with Sora that just makes you like him immediately. Lea thinks that he might have been like that himself once, back before he and Isa had gotten that crazy idea in their heads that had started this whole mess for them.]
