Roxas On The Ship

Roxas was confused.

This in itself was not that unusual, however it was different. Everything he worried about just days ago seemed to be less of a problem now that he's found himself in a new, somewhat hostile world. He met Riku and followed him to a ship, and today he was just hanging out, trying to get a feel for the place, and maybe unscramble the mess that was his memories.

In the morning, he can be found sitting on the railing overlooking the sea. Roxas looks content doing so, he had a fascination with the water.

In the afternoon, he can be found in the galley getting a snack, or perhaps down below deck, checking out his room and pacing between it and the steps so he can remember where it is.

In the evening, he can be found on deck on his back, staring at the stars.

I don't understand how that can be when I don't have one. Maybe it's just a memory of what it's like.

Or maybe you have one. You yourself said that you have no memories of anything.

How would that be possible?

Maybe you should ask Axel. Or Namine. How do they explain you feeling things when you're supposedly a Nobody. Personally I would bet some money on the idea that you're not a Nobody.

Maybe you're not a person like others, but neither a Nobody. Maybe something in between.

[Roxas just needs to think for a minute. It's that expression he gets, a little distant, as though he's not looking at anything. He scratched his arm without a thought, and suddenly he blinks and looks at Ikki once more.]

I don't know. I can't remember everything Namine told me. I know Axel said I was just remembering feelings, not feeling them. I'm trying to remember why I left the Organization. There might be a clue or something. I know we fought. We had an argument because...I don't know. I left and next thing I really knew I was fighting Riku. He says I'm Sora's Nobody too. It must be true.

But you were like a blank page when they found you, weren't you? I find it hard to see how you would remember feelings when you have no memories of ever being human. And I told you, having a best friend, hurting when you think they are gone forever, those things are done with a heart. If he maintains that they aren't real...

[A pause, when he continues there's a sneer in his tone.]

Then your friendship with him isn't real either, and it's just you "remembering" what's like to have a friend.

I have a lot of questions about that stuff. How did I learn to wield a keyblade?

[That's probably a confusing one.]

You threw me in the water. I never went swimming before but I swam okay. That must be a memory too but one I don't know about. Axel didn't teach me to read or write, but I can do that okay. After I remembered how to talk.

[He frowns a bit.]

He's really my friend. I'm sure of it. Besides, he has a heart now.

The way it sounds is like with amnesia. The mind forgets all but basic education even if it doesn't remember how it was learned, and the body remembers everything. It's called muscle memory.

But I don't think that feelings work that way. You can remember a feeling but for that you would need to remember situations that cause you that feeling. Without memories of events, you can't really remember a feeling.

[Roxas looks at him, mulling that over. Maybe that is the case, if so, why did he have so many feelings? He knows he has them, he knows he can be angry - god can he ever, but why? It doesn't make a lot of sense with what he knows.]

[With what he has been told, rather. Ikki has issues with kids who only know what they are told and who believe what they are told at first so easily. Mostly because he was that way once, and it ended badly for him.

Things are bad enough for Roxas already, no need to add to it all. But leaving him be wouldn't do him any good either. Ikki returns to his work once more letting the other think. He has a lot of thinking to do after all.]
