[Insert Geico pig squealing inside of Marco's head here.]

[Just for this, he will totally take Roxas flying sometime.]

[Marco is one talented phoenix. As long as he can stay on the board, Roxas is happy to push it harder and faster along the deck, so Marco can feel how fun it is.]

What do you think Xifer? I don't know if you can do more tricks, because you only have two feet. Not unless you want to ride on my shoulder or something.

[Only two feet? Perhaps Roxas means as opposed to without hands.]

[But to the suggestion, Marco hesitates. It can be hard to find a good grip without crushing someone's shoulder, and he's as light as a bird, but that's still a lot heavier than it looks. Especially since he looks like fire.]

[He'll just have to be careful.]

[So he hops up.]

[He's a little surprised, but that seems like Marco's taking his suggestion. He stands up straight and scratches his belly lightly. Fortunately, those keyblades aren't the lightest things in the world and Roxas has two of them, so the added weight doesn't really make him think twice about it.

He pops his skateboard up in his hand, thinking.]

We'll do something easy first. Don't get too scared!

[He drops it and plants a foot on the board. He decides he should probably warn Marco what he's about to do.]

I'm going to grab the board when I jump, and then I'll jump again and flip it beneath my feet.

[Here we go. Roxas starts building speed first, zooming around the deck.]

[Marco's eyes do widen a bit warily. Not because the speeds or mid-air worries him, it's just staying on Roxas' shoulder without clawing him accidentally that concerns him. If he claws up Ace, it's not a big deal. If he claws up Namur -- well no, that's pretty bad since the sharkman goes nuts, but still, Marco doesn't claw Namur because he sits on him differently. And Jozu is made of diamond so he never had to worry about clawing him. That and Jozu's twenty feet tall, but the point is, Roxas is a kid and Marco's talons can take huge chunks out of people so...]

[He'll just have to be VERY careful.]

[And let go to fly if he gets too worried.]

[Roxas isn't worried, and he trusts Marco not to hurt him on purpose.

When the desired speed is achieved, he jumps, catching the board with one hand and lands smoothly back on the deck. One more jump and the board's flipped while he's in the air.

He lands with precision and is just circling again, harmlessly on the deck.]

[Oh! Well this isn't so bad. So long as he just holds his balance without gripping, it should be fine, and it definitely seems like fun, so Marco goes along for the ride.]

[Partly forgetting about Marco, after a few more little jumps, his mind wanders. After all, Roxas was distracted to begin with.

The next time he jumps, he's careless on his landing and in missing his footing he lands on the deck. Oops. It doesn't happen often, but Roxas can't be great all the time.]

[Marco's a little jostled, and surprised at the landing, but he keeps from clamping down even reflexively, and peers around Roxas shoulder with a small cheep to ask if the boy is okay.]

[still within hearing distance of most of this, Thatch sings]

Cheap, cheap, the first mate's cheap
We wanted the wine and he wouldn't shut up
We wanted the rice and he gave us the shove
Cheap, Cheap, the first mate's cheap
We should shave him down

If he had any hair.

[Roxas gives Marco a little smile and pets him a little bit.]

Sorry Xifer. My mind wandered a bit. I'm going to take a little break. You can play more if you want.

[Marco chirps and smiles softly, patting Roxas on the head with a wing before taking off to go tackle Thatch.]

I wouldn't speak of shaving if I were you skyscraper hair!

[he chuckles and reaches up to pet Marco]

He's going to find out you know.

[He watches Marco go and sighs a little bit. He flips his skateboard back up into his hand and leans it against the side of the boat.

Roxas sits down on the deck, leaning back against the side as he thinks. He draws a knee up to rest against.

Thinking so far hasn't helped him sort things out, but maybe he can make some headway eventually. Fighting with Lea didn't help much.]

[Marco glances back at the sad kid, cocks his head to the side, and hops back down.]

Eventually. But he's happier having a pet as a friend than a first mate looking after him.

[That said, he joins Roxas' side and tilts his head to look up at the kid.]

What's wrong?

[He blinks a little and gives Marco a little smile again.]

Hey, I thought you went up there, huh? Do you want me to put the board back down for you?

[fierybluebird]

[Marco shakes his head no, and gently nudges Roxas with a headbutt before whistling again softly.]

Talk.

[Of course he can't understand the whistling, but it doesn't seem like Marco wants to play. Roxas moves his hand over and runs his fingers through the feathers again.]

I can pet you.

[That's what he wants, right? Roxas can probably do that and think at the same time.]

[Marco sighs and rolls over on his back trying to play vulnerable for a bit.]

[One day he will have to learn Leanne's galdrars, even if they won't have the effects.]

[For now he settles for singing this, but if Thatch or Ace notice it, he'll deny it fervently.]

[He pets him, quiet for a little bit, but Roxas never did like quiet. He speaks softly, but keeps his hand over Marco.]

I'm mad at Lea. No..not mad. It's like being mad, but not really the same. He's really lucky you know. He's my best friend, but something happens later, in the future and he gets his heart back. He used to be called Axel.

[A slow nod and Marco nudges Roxas as comfortingly as he can.]

Jealous? [A quiet whistle. Even though Roxas probably wouldn't understand the word.]

[Still, it was actually like him and Thatch, only in reverse, he suspected. Axel got less dark and found his life, and Thatch had the opposite happen. He found his death and got more dark.]

[Marco idly flicks his tail up and down before tilting his head at Roxas to wait for the boy to continue talking.]

[Was Thatch jealous too? Upset that Marco had to continue living without him? But Marco had been able to dye his hair and feather to symbolism that they were still the same; together. Maybe Axel could do something like that too?]

[It was jealousy, but it wasn't one of the feelings that Axel told Roxas about so he's confused by it.]

It's really good though, for him I mean. I don't know how it happened, he won't tell me anything about it. He's always keeping secrets from me. That makes me mad.

[Roxas is sure of that emotion, he's very familiar with it.]

It can't happen for me. I'm not like that, Namine said. I'm not supposed to exist and I won't, when we get back. It'll just be Sora. We're the same person, only, even as Nobody I didn't really come out right.

When I died, with that cook's soup, it was just like that. I disappeared as if I wasn't here to begin with.

[A sinking feeling fills his stomach at the thought. He's not sure how to describe it.]

[Marco gives a low sad whistle, quiet and mournful. So it was the same as Thatch in a way. Not joining with someone else, but no going home.]

[Another low whistle and Marco curls up around Roxas protectively.]

At least you have here, eh?

[Unfortunately, Roxas has to go home, or Sora can't exist and fulfill his destiny. Sora would remain asleep, suspended in that egg and Xemnas would win, maybe.

Marco is a really smart bird and Roxas nuzzles his nice soft feathers.]

When I get back, it's going to be really important, but it makes me really mad too. I'm scared. I can't tell Lea because he gets upset about it. It isn't really his problem anymore anyway. He has a heart again...

[Whether theories are right or not, Roxas doesn't know. Does he have his own heart? It's possible but unlikely. It doesn't change the fact he came from Sora, and Sora needs him to wake up.]

We got into a fight. He asked me what I was thinking about and then he got that look on his face, and he says my name in that way where he's thinking...I don't know. He seemed sad and I don't like that either.

[Ugh, emotions are so confusing.]

[Marco's tail swishes up and down again, thinking about moving on. Is that how Thatch feels too? He gently nudges Roxas back and gives him a quiet phoenix snuggle to reassure him.]

[It sounded like Roxas just needed to talk more with Lea to try to work things out at least. To get used to the changes and everything else.]
