The contents of Flynn's money pouch had been replaced. Where once gald coins had been were now unfamiliar coins... Flynn assumed they must be this place's currency or else he didn't know why else it'd be in his money pouch.

His eyes swept across the round table they all stood at, at all the other people from their world (that they knew of) before emptying the contents of his pouch on the table in front of them.

"This is all I have. If we're going to get a ship big enough for all of us and with the most facilities to make our voyage as comfortable as possible, I think we'll have to each chip in."

Somehow, just somehow he knew she was going to bring up a lab.

"While I'm all for kids goin' out and innovatin' new ideas for the world, I'm not sure if we'll be able ta afford it right now. Besides," he added with a jovial grin, "there's nothin' wrong with ol' fashion sailin'!"

He then went into his usual dramatic flair, hands and arms moving as if to accentuate his words. "Pitchin' the sails, swabbin' the decks, bein' at the mercy of the tides and winds—! Makes ya feel like a real sailor."

"Makes you sound crazy, if you ask me. So much manual labor out of me and Estelle? Yeah, right."

"And you expect somethin' out of an old man like me?"

All right, joking aside. (Though he may have been more serious about his own statement.)

"But ya know it might not be a while 'til ya get your little lab. We have a few more important things to get first, ya know."

"I'm aware, but in the long run, we want tools, and frankly I don't see anyone better for making better ones than me. But I need the stuff to do that, so..."

"Do you think this place even has the equipment you'll need?"

[sage_of_aspio]

"If it doesn't, I'll just have to make it with the tools I can get. Not that hard, really."

Typical Rita bravado, of course...

And there was that Rita persistence and ingenuity.

"Even if it's just some rocks and wood?"

Obviously not that primitive, but hey. If they're off to some islands without "modern" day means, that might be all they can get if they're that desperate.

"What I've seen is a lot more than that, you know. Might have to work with Yuri on some things, but..."

"Well sure we got a few things now, but we're not always gonna be at port. What if something breaks while we're on some other remote island?"

"Spares."

He could continue, but there was really no point. So he just let out a mock defeated sigh.

"All right, all right. Just try not to get anything too expensive or flammable. Last thing we need is to have our ship sink because of some haywire explosion."

"I presume you mean besides the highly-volatile gunpowder based cannons that seem to be so popular?"

[rainofheaven]

"Hey now, those are different. On their own they're all right. Just can't have any fire around them except when you're lightin' the fuse."

"... Light usually requires fire around here, if you haven't noticed."

[rainofheaven]

"But ya just need a match. Don't need a fireball or somethin' to light that up."

[sage_of_aspio]

"A match is enough to light the fuse, you know."

[rainofheaven]

"I'm startin' ta think we're like two ships passin' through the night on this argument, Rita darlin'," Raven said with a bit of a rueful sigh.

"All I'm sayin' is whatever ya end up doin' in yer lab, just make sure it doesn't end up blowin' up in your face and then makin' the ship blow up with it."

It was a legitimate concern, all right.

"Okay, okay, jeeze. Just means we'll have to set up explosives-research sites on islands every so often if we want cool stuff there."

"...Cool stuff?"

"I'm pretty sure I can make better cannons than what I've seen, for one."

Sadly, he was also sure about that.

"Think you'll have the power and tech for it?"

[sage_of_aspio]

"It's not just a matter of power and tech. I can build tools for those. It's a matter of the parts for the tools... Even if I gotta forge 'em myself. Or get, I dunno, a minion for it."

"A minion?"

He was not sure he liked the sound of that.

[sage_of_aspio]

"Yeah. Someone to build the petty crap so I can work on the big stuff."

... Some people would call that an 'apprentice'.

He was thinking that, but he decided to err on the side of not wanting to rile Rita up and keep his mouth shut about it. Instead he just gave a small, wry laugh.

"If you actually did find one, that would mean they'd be part of the crew."

Though that being said...

"Which may not be too bad of an idea. Havin' a cabin boy doin' all the dirty work to help ease up on the load."

In other words, so he would have less work to do.
