Being Champion of Kirkwall has its perks. Even Knight-Commander Meredith won't touch me.

...I guess I kind of like rubbing it in to her and the Templars.

..."Champion of Kirkwall?" How in the world did you get slapped with a title like that?

[It's a good thing his eyebrow is attached to his face; it's nearly up to his hairline as it is, though.]

[And... she stops mid-thought herself, staring at him.]

...You... don't remember that?

[Well, she's in good company then, because he's staring at her.]

[...She doesn't dare use the event she remembers best to date it.

About... four years? after I got to Kirkwall. Few months after the anniversary, I guess.

Did you reclaim the family estate at some point?

After the Deep Roads.

The treasure she'd brought back had been enough to give her some importance, make the viscount listen to their case.]

Apparently some qunari have kidnapped the Viscount's son; he just finished asking me to look for him before I wound up here, instead.

I suppose he asked you to help him, too.

...That's how it all started.

[That poor kid.

That poor, poor kid. He's one of the many faces that haunts her dreams at night. One of the various voices that asks "Why weren't you able?" There's too much blood on her hand. Too much innocent blood.]

I never got the chance. That is, I wound up in front of that infuriating fountain before I could even go looking.

Go to the Chantry.

[It's all she can say. It's the only thing that matters: making sure someone else might be in time to save him.]

Oh, splendid. Two of my very favorite Kirkwall tourist spots.

Also, uh. She sure does have a few bags and things. Maybe he should stop being a progress-impeding asshole and offer to show her to the crew quarters.]

Do you want to set those down somewhere? I can show you the crew quarters, or the galley, whichever is more appropriate.

I'd rather spend a year with the Qunari than a day in the Chantry.

I've got... supplies. Bones for the mabari, bandages for Anders...

I suppose with the Qunari at least there's a nice view.

Isabela told me there were mabari here.

[She's a Ferelden at heart. And that means she loves dogs. Especially extremely intelligent dogs like the mabari.]

[LUCKILY before this can get any more awkward, CHAMPION THE MABARI ARRIVES TO SAVE THE DAY! He walks right up to Marian and jabs his nose right into her sternum, where he commences sniffing busily. What a charmer, huh?]

Champ, where are your manners?

What are manners between family?

[She and Garrett have never met, no. But she's a Hawke. And so is he. And obviously the mabari knows it. Or so she'll tell herself.

She smiles, scratching behind one of the mabari's ears.

The words are out before she can stop herself:]

I bet Carver loved him.

Mother would be ashamed.

[Also she would not allow the dog half the liberties he's taking with Marian.]

Bethany loved him, too.

[oh no, sibling feelings...subject change, subject change!!]

Anders hates him. Or at least he pretends he does.

Well, Anders is a cat person.

Isabela mentioned a cat, so I brought some string for it.

That'll make him happy. He was talking about finding some string for it to play with.

It uses the dogs as a bed.

So. Not that different than Anders, then.

[She grins a little.]

Totally fearless against all logic.

And occasionally insufferable at the most inconvenient moments.

[He's grinning a bit, too.]
