[After getting a couple of bowls and another spoon, he ladles out the soup. He walks over to the table, setting a bowl down in front of Cynthia before turning back to help himself.]

At three in the morning? VERY obvious. But I told him I'd start calling him "Kitty". He's...not all that happy about it.

[And then there was the soup. She had JUST told him she wasn't hungry. But it would be rude to just push it away. At least it didn't reek of fish. She'll just poke it with her spoon for a bit.]

[He'd feel awkward having a bowl by himself, otherwise. Gaius sits down with his soup, stirring it about to cool a little.]

Heh! Yeah, I'm surprised no one's complained. Kitty, huh? Why's that?

Well before I was so graciously exiled from town. I saw this old lady with this skitty like creature called a cat. It had this little bell on its collar and the old lady kept calling it "kitty". I guess his bells reminded me of that.

But I'm sure you guys lose things all the time on this ship, maybe he could accidentally misplace them. I mean it shouldn't be too hard to steal his bells. I know you'd--

[Wait, pause, no. She didn't actually say that out loud did she? Oh arceus no...]

uh...you'd help me, right?

[Maybe if she hadn't paused so abruptly, it wouldn't have been so telling, but even just the offhanded use of the word 'steal' would have given him pause. Looking at her quietly for a moment even after she finishes speaking, Gaius takes a sip of his soup.]

...now why would you want to do something like that?

Boredom and sick amusement.

[There wasn't much to do on this ship, so really, why not? Plus messing with Gan Ning seemed like such a fun thing to do ever since she saw how he reacted to being called "Kitty". But man she wished she could have worded that better.]

Heh, you're in trouble if you're already getting bored. We haven't been out to sea that long.

[It was a wry smile, though short-lived. He gulped down another mouthful of soup before propping his chin up over a hand.]

...steal, huh.

[Well that was it. Better to rip off the band aid now and get this all over with.]

[Well that answers that question. Of course, his best guess would have been that if it wasn't from one of their current crew, then it would have had to be someone from home. Gaius hadn't seemed all that bothered when he'd prompted her, and he seems to take it in stride once Cynthia names the culprit.]

Ah, I see. How's she doing? Last I talked to her, she kind of blew up on me.

[Yeah, that had been fun, but that woman was too stubborn to see around what she took things to be.]

Well she was kind enough to tell me a few things about you before bothering to introduce herself.

[She's tapping her fingers on the table again.]

So that why you've been all quiet around me lately?

Oh no, I'm quiet because I've fallen madly in love with you.

[She'll try and hide her smirk as she take the bowl to her lips. Might as well take a sip right? It'd be a waste for it to go cold. This is her trying to lighten the mood a little.]

[He doesn't bother hiding his own smirk as he fishes around in the soup to scoop up one of the vegetables he'd chopped earlier.]

Probably after. I mean how could I not fall for the very handsome, candy loving, ex-convict that saved my life? Though I'd REALLY like to hear his side of the story.

So she told you about that? I'm a little surprised, but then again, this is Maribelle we're talking about.

What's to talk about? Doesn't seem like much point in me repeating what she's said, so why don't you tell me what all you've heard from her, first?

Well let's see...you got blackmailed, you broke into a royal treasury, you're a "marked man in your society" whatever that means, you've gotten a pretty good reputation as a thief, knowing this would give us a "better understanding of each other", you may get mad at me for knowing this and that you're probably the most trustworthy and dependable guy I will ever meet.

[Although the latter part does have him arch a brow. He scratches the back of his head, looking down at his bowl of soup.]

Well, it's true. I'm a thief, there's no going around that one. And I did get blackmailed into some nasty business with nobles back home, figure they would've used anyone with their hands already dirtied, just so they wouldn't have to get directly involved. Not sure how much Maribelle told you about that, but basically it was either her or her father, and I figured it wasn't fair for them to mix up his daughter into things. I didn't know what good it would do otherwise, but I wrote a letter about what happened, once my sentence was lifted. Found out later from Maribelle that it had actually saved her father from being killed for a crime he'd never committed.

[Ok so MAYBE she might have overreacted a little. But who could blame her? In a world filled with pirates, being on a boat with an ex-convict would make anyone question their trust. She felt bad that she did though.]

So you're not mad?

Depends on what you view as bad, I guess. I'm not big on killing- that's kind of how I got involved with the Shepherds, after finding out that the group I was hired on with was really supposed to pull off the assassination of the Exalt. So I ended up switching sides and helped the Exalt's brother instead. Been with them ever since- well, until I ended up here, anyway.

[He shrugs, chewing a piece of potato before washing it down with another spoonful of the broth.]

Mad? Why should I be? Being a thief's not something I'll deny, 'specially when it's true. I know people tend to be wary about their things when they know a thief's around, and I'm usually the first culprit they pin if their stuff goes missing, but it's not something I'm particularly bothered with. -although for the record, I don't go stealing things that belong to comrades.

Well "Twinkles" told me you'd be. Urgh, maybe I should just stop listening to her.

What, seriously? [He frowns a little, and with a sigh, he shakes his head.]

Don't worry about it. I'm used to it.

[Well now she feels bad. But she does know a way to make it up to him.

Rummaging through her pocket, she takes out a small golden tin and of mints and places it on the table in front of him]

[He arches a brow at it, his gaze flicking from the little tin and back to Cynthia.]

These are mints fused with belue. It's a kind of berry from my world. I had an unlimited supply of these back home. So I'd like you to have it.

[As if the sacks of chocolate coins weren't enough.]

[You are going to spoil him.]

Mints, huh...

[He reaches over to open the tin so he can have a look at them, although he pauses to look back at Cynthia.]

What for? Just because of a little misunderstanding?
