[Bolin, handling the situation as astutely as possible, distracted Ace from his weird irritation and pulled away his aggression with ease. Confused as to what he was alluding, Ace blinked rapidly in Bolin's direction and raised his head, his expression changing immediately.
I dunno, it just kind of seemed like you and Pabu had a staring thing going on there? [ Bolin shrugged. It didn't seem like any harm was set to come of that showdown of the eyeballs, at least. So no harm, no foul, no reason not to keep it light. ] And I mean, Pabu's left a long string of awed fans and bitter enemies and broken hearts in the past, Captain. Sometimes I have to stare at him, too. But mostly it's a string of people who aren't actually... out here pirating. Or in this world at all. So yeah, you know, I'm trying to keep his slate clean. Making sure he's not causing trouble behind my back, in front of my face.
[Ace's right brow slowly began to lift off of the ground as if it were a vampire ascending from its tomb. Bolin started and didn't stop until there was a sufficient gap between himself and a point that wasn't inundated with weird.]
Oh! Could be that, too. Right. [ Maybe he should have gone for that first. Ah, well. ] I've been getting a lot of people who never saw a fire ferret before since I got here. It's kinda sad.
[ Not in a "that's pathetic" way, just in more of a "they are genuinely missing out" way. ]
Nah, not Pabu. [ He'd had this discussion a couple of times since getting to this world. And he could understand where the thought came from. All things considered, you'd think a fire ferret would do something fiery. ] I mean, it would be pretty interesting! But I think someone was starting to name stuff and they thought "these look really red! Let's call them fire ferrets!" Which is weird, because I think they're actually from the Earth Kingdom.
Awww. [Ace was pretty honest with his disappointment here, but it didn't stop him from pulling out a bunch of jerky and offer it to Pabu. Ferrets ate Slim Jims, right?]
Have you just tried gettin' him to use fire? Maybe he can do that earth bending thing, instead.
[ As a former ferret of the streets, Pabu possessed the much-necessary ability to eat anything that was technically considered edible. It was a gift. ]
If there's one thing I know, it's that you never know, right? When he played Juji in my Nuktuk movers, they did this really cool thing where it looked like he had eye beams, and I always thought that could be so useful in real life!
Ohh, right. I should really start remembering this stuff. Well, movers are sort of a... moving pictures... type of situation. I'm sure there's a detailed technical explanation about how it works and how it all gets put together, but I'll be honest. [ The hands went up, and the shrug came out. ] I was only interested in the acting, so I have no idea what any of those explanations are. My judgement call leans towards cool, though. I got to pretend to be a waterbending hero who saved the world and his girlfriend with the help of talking animals. It was pretty great!
Movies? Huh. Yeah, I guess I can see how that would work too. [ Like wow, how did nobody think of that. ] And yeah! My friend Varrick turned me into Nuktuk: hero of the South!
[ He struck a heroic pose. As heroic as one got without standing up anyway. ] I mean, it was mostly trying to get the President to send troops down to the South Pole to help with a civil war, and then Varrick sort of turned out to be, you know, playing both sides of the fence to make money off of it, so it really went against the hero thing. But it was still a lot of fun! And I maybe got a girlfriend out of it, too? That's been pretty unclear so far.
[Then, Bolin started talking and Ace started feeding Pabu pieces of jerky, almost unblinking. Political quandaries and scuffles were interesting to some, but Ace's deadpanned and confused stare indicated that he was completely and utterly lost in even the shortest of explanations of war and politics.]
[ I'm so sorry Ace. He's terrible at reading people.
But that said, he also had his little rambly explanation out of the way, and didn't see a need to go full life-story for the occasion. He paused for a second to consider why he was even on that track of thought. ]
Oh, but yeah, I guess I try to keep pretty busy with whatever I can. The probending season, uh. Kinda fell through pretty early, so I was lucky Varrick ended up needing me!

Uh. [In return to what Bolin told him about the movers--Ace only had a deadpanned, confused look to give him. Really, that all came at once.]
Y'know, we come from pretty different places. You gotta tell me more than that or I can't tell you if it's cool or not.
[Cultural exchanges at their most base of forms.]

Holy shit, you did movies? You're an actor and a pro-bender, too?
[The mystique of Bolin. The mystery as to how one man could be so many things.]
