Get lost, feathers. [before Thatch decided to do something a little crazy that the land was fighting with him not to do] Go roll around in some petals I'm trying to focus here.
[lets darkness flow over his hand and arm despite the land fighting with him as he tries to pry Marco off.]
[Argh, this is all a headache. On the one hand, Marco kind of wants to protect the peace of the forest and fighting in it would be the opposite.]
[On the other hand, he also wants to protect Thatch's right to violence, and his OWN aggression. He's Marco, for fuck's sake. Not just a phoenix, but the second to the strongest man in the world, twice over!]
[And if his dumbass baby brother thinks he can boss him around, he has another think coming.]
[Stupid uppity darkness user, who does he think he is?!]
Don't ever forget you're under my command, brother! [CRACKS THEIR HEADS TOGETHER! It's gonna hurt them both like a bitch, but it's worth it.] Trying to get me to fight in this forest! [Grabs Thatch's ears and tugs on them just because he's in a mood.] We're done when I say so, and not a second before!
[ow! Damnit you have a hard head! He doesn't want to give in. He wants to fight. He doesn't want to fight. He wants to relax but he wants to get away from this place as much as he wants to conquer it. But--
He will follow Marco until the day he dies...again]
Aye...
[but he jerks his head away and attempts to twist over on his stomach. No love and fluff accepted today!]
[Pulls Thatch's head forward in a glomping hug and just winds up laughing in spite of himself.]
I hate this place.
[HE SAYS WITH A GIANT GRIN. Yeah okay.]
But I do love you, yoi.
[SNUGGLES!] We'll be gone soon, though I know Leanne will miss it. It's probably just as well, eh? I'm not sure how well Ace can contain his F-I-R-E. [Spells out the word just in case the forest flips out at the word itself, fuck if Marco knows.]
Are you sure you'll be okay? [HUUUUUUUGS. You can't escape him. He learned hugging from Whitebeard himself okay.]
[you are going insane Marco... More than usual. Thatch shifts uncomfortably. Normally he doesn't mind the affection but everything is just too overwhelming]
I'll be fine. [forces himself to ruffle that hair again affectionately] I won't let it beat me.
[hugs back grumpily then lets his arms drop.]
Walk with me
[by that he means ride on his shoulder. Maybe the exercise will help]
[Chirps and cranes his neck, stretching it out so Thatch can have at. Though he still leans his head on top of Thatch's and finishes that braid carefully.]
Of the dark, you mean, eh.
[Wow. It's like he has a big mouth like this too. He doesn't like it. And literally makes a chiding sound at himself and wraps both wings around Thatch in a stubborn hug.] But I don't care, yoi. You're all mine and I'm not going to let the island push you. It has to go through me first!
[Trills and then growls at the forest, like the trees themselves are actively listening and acting.]
[Also more preening for Thatch.] It's pushing me too, brother. [It's important. That Thatch knows that. That it's not just Thatch. That it's both of them. That it's--]
[His voice drops quietly.] I'm glad you ate your devil fruit. I didn't think I would be. But now we're still the same even when we're different.
[He buries his head into Thatch's hair, folds his wings back up and stubbornly leans on the other man.] And I missed you.
[while it's a relief to know that he's not alone in this, it doesn't make him feel much better-- and he notices Marco is more open than usual, even with him. It's all push and pull and push and pull and he's focusing on trying to keep it all the way the hell from him to notice too much more than what Marco is doing]
At least someone is.
[he doesn't regret it. Not exactly. He had to do it to keep people safe and so he did it and he would do it again. But...]
Miss the water sometimes, though.
[and he begins to sing whistle softly]
Mother sea, carry me, you are so blue Oceans wide, waves so high, carry me to adventure I long to be with you, Until my journey's end, Please say, please say you'll never leave me.
[he thinks hard, too. He knows on a lot of levels he's just being a brat. Someone who wants what he can't have. What's annoying is it's the island reminding him of it. Pushing. Like a siren trying to get him to open. But if it all flows free...
he shudders involuntarily and pulls Marco into his arms because yes he's cuddling deal with it. He gives the bird lovings to distract himself.]
Nay. Not darkness. You know enough of it, old friend.
[because really, and he will concede this much--only this much]
I will take you across the sea.
{Marco can take himself, of course, he can navigate or fly but there is something about a ship. Wind and waves and sail and nakama. He can't bring nakama. That is Ace's field. But at the very least he can protect it. Preserve it. Direct it.]
[Marco almost instantly calms down though and snuggles the stuffing out of Thatch, doing everything he can to make Thatch feel better.]
[It's not all 1600 of them, and it's not with Pops, but Pops would still be proud of them for carrying on the best they can. And with the four of them there are, that's enough to spread and Marco's kind of proud of the Spades. Thatch, Logan, Roxas, Lea, Salami, all of them.]
[So he sings Thatch a phoenix song to try to make it all better.]
[he hums along as much as he can but it doesn't make him feel much better. The deeper in he goes the more he sweats and then he has to stop entirely, leaning against a tree]
I gotta go back to shore, sweetheart.
[it was too much. He was too weak. He'd readily admit that and half a dozen other things if it would get him out of here]
[Marco nods understandingly and snuggles up against Thatch more.]
May I please come with you?
[The stilted formality of the manners is a mark of how it's affecting Marco too, and not in ways he likes much. It's easier for him to stay strong when he has to be for Thatch's sake, for any of his brother's sakes. On his own, he's still just as stubborn, but alone he only lets himself down, not the others.]
[he knows you and he knows this island's grip on you. He also knows how crazy you get. And maybe it's part of a sadistic side to make you choose. Maybe he just wants to see if you'll fight or give over to the spring phoenix in you. and dirty ducks]
[He glances back at the forest's deepness with a shudder.]
[He can feel too much of the pull, and he hates it.]
[But that it scares him... is something he must fight.]
[And to go away is to run away, not to fight it.]
[He trembles and glances up at the other man.]
Don't leave me.
[And grabs the neckerchief with his beak.]
[There are few things that truly scare Marco, and far fewer he will admit out loud with his pride, with his job of being the strong one everyone can rely on, but he's scared now.]
[He doesn't know what he wants. Whether he wants to go back, or deeper, to face it alone, or not, but he doesn't want to leave Thatch unless Thatch makes him.]
[Marco's fear thrills through him but in a cold way, making his limbs feel weak. He whistles in a calming way and has Marco step up on a branch before he takes off his neckerchief and makes a hood, placing it gently over Marco's head. Then he guides the phoenix onto his shoulder and begins his way out of the forest toward the sound of crashing waves]
Pretty birdy, don't you cry Papa will be home in the morning. Pretty birdy, don't you sigh Soon we'll go to join him
Autumn rains and winter sun Spring and summer winds Will bring us all hand in hand An join us close again.
[he tries to sing jauntily, and then he just tries to sing, his voice coming out thin and dry. But at least it's there]
[Marco's panic flares through him, freezing him, accentuated by his haki. For a moment he can't breathe himself. But he forces himself to be slow as he takes Marco from his shoulder and cradles him again, removing the makeshift hood.He had been trying to...take the burden of control for once. But...maybe this was the wrong place for it]
It's the island.
[he holds Marco close against his chest, cradling him, stroking under his wings, making smooth soothing chirps and massaging his chest]
[He instantly rubs the top of his head along Thatch's neck as soothingly as he can, spreading his wings to allow for the pets and trying to soothe his brother right back.]
Me too.
[He doesn't know what else to say. To make it better. He's scared, Thatch is hurting, and it must be fixed, but he doesn't know how.]
[And that scares him more.]
It's not like me.
[Thatch had said it was, but it's not. It wasn't just spring. Something was much deeper wrong with it all.]
I want to protect you from it.
[No one was allowed to touch his Thatch. Maybe that was why he was scared. Because it was affecting Thatch and Marco didn't know how to stop it for once. If he puffed up as big as he could and wrapped his wings around Thatch, would it fix it? Could he shield him from it?]
[Yes, that had to be why he was scared. He'd lost Thatch once already, the idea of losing him to the forest or anything else terrified him to the core.]
Thatch is mine. Not for the forest to touch.
[He gives the forest the most dark and menacing growl he can. He'll kick apart whatever he has to in order to protect his brother.]
[he tries to be comforted. But it's difficult without giving into the island entirely and Marco's anxiety is bleeding into him. Thatch tries to relax but he can almost feel Marco's flightiness about the whole thing]
I think I'd better go back to the Moon for a while.
[because he couldn't handle it. Not when both of them were like this. He stroked Marco's neck and kissed the top of his head]
I can be yours there, too, aye?
[he wasn't even sure exactly if it was a direct reply to the conversation or not. He just wanted to get out. Get away]

[Still, he instantly switches back to phoenix and hops up onto Thatch's shoulder, quietly playing with his hair to braid it slightly.]

[tolerates the braiding because it's Marco and he loves him]
It's not a great place for the monsters of the deep.
[reaches up to pet Marco's neck]

[He never really could swim, so he doesn't know what it's like to miss it. And given the sky instead? He can't imagine wanting anything else.]
[Besides. Water is wet.]
[Blech.]
Have Namur take you swimming sometime.
And I'll take you flying.
And you can take me into darkness.
[He shuffles on Thatch's shoulder and thinks hard. It's hard to think. Everything deeper is closer to the surface, and he can't even push it away.]

[To face it alone....]
[Is he even strong enough?]
[He never thinks so.]
[Maybe it's not about strength.]
[Maybe Thatch just wants to be asked.]
[He glances back at the forest's deepness with a shudder.]
[He can feel too much of the pull, and he hates it.]

[For a second he forgot it was Thatch, that Thatch would never ever leave him if he asked it.]
[For a split second, Marco felt very much like a small child being abandoned in a forest like something out of a dark fairy tale.]
[It was a punishment, wasn't it?]
[For being too weak?]
[For not being strong enough?]
[For showing that weakness?]
[Complete and total fear and panic seized him as the neckerchief became a hood, like Thatch was saying goodbye.]
[Don'tgodon'tgodon'tgodon'tgodon'tgodon't ever leave me again!]
[He wanted to protest, to say something, to react, and he couldn't, too numb with fear.]
[And then it was gone and Thatch offered up his shoulder and Marco flew there so fast he might as well have teleported.]
[Stupid stupid stupid...]
[He couldn't breathe.]
[He didn't know why he'd even think that.]
[Of course Thatch wouldn't leave him if he asked.]
[It was Thatch.]
[Why?]
[Why had he even been scared?]
[But even now he's shaking.]
Thatch...
[It's a dark low whistle.] Something's very wrong with me.
[He can breathe again, but he can't begin to understand it.]

[Marco gives him a birdie kiss right back and his breathing is still rapid, but starts calming down at least.] I shall protect your sleep for now, eh?
