Mm, and you'll still be a pirate when we depart. If something does happen here I'm sure there's no doubt you'd be able to protect them. The forest won't stop you from getting revenge, believe me.

[And - wait, he's processing this admittedly lovely crafted ring of flowers so gently bestowed upon him. Then eyeing the ball of phoenix. Then back to the flower lei.]

Or perhaps you'll turn into a heron before we leave? That appears to be a distinct possibility.

[Flomps up to his eyes and over his wings in flowers.]

[leans against the closest tree, arms crossed, jerkass smile

Eat too many and you'll become attached. We're going to have to drag you out by the talons at this rate.

[Lazily flomps over onto Naesala's feet.] Take me away before I turn pure and then Thatch will never speak to me again!

[Flails feebly.]

[rubs his chin thoughtfully and looks down at this poor, broken phoenix]

Hmm...I don't know. Who's to say the purity won't last even beyond the forest walls? [solemnly clucks tongue, so obviously full of shit] You might be changed forever, Marco, I'm terribly sorry.

[He... doesn't exactly look like it right now though.]

[He silently bends down and rearranges several clumps of flowers over the fearsome warrior's head.]

Terrifying. Truly sends shivers down my spine. No other bird would dare to compete.

[He'll just relax a little longer.]

[He goes ahead and sits down since he was leaning over anyway. If Marco can stall the departure, so can Naesala.]

This place really did rattle you, didn't it? [flicks a flower off of him] I can seriously try to help you back if you'd like.

[Rolls over again and noms on a flower.]

It's.... complicated.

[Yeah, he is kind of rattled. Not because he completely hates it, but because he doesn't completely hate it. So what does that say about his instincts? But wouldn't his father want him to be more peaceful when he could? They just never had time for it before.]

My Pops was a beorc. He adopted me a long long time ago. But I think you would have liked him. He was a great man. The best.

He protected islands like Fishman Island where Namur's from, and a bunch of other places in the New World to stop slavers and other beorc royalty who thought it was okay to own people like us.

[He puffs his cheeks up, thinking for a bit.] Peace is... not the kind of luxury I can afford. And I didn't think I ever wanted it. [He tilts his head looking up at Naesala from the flowerbed.] Is that strange?

[The man sounded like a beorc he would've gotten along with, at the very least. Not that he personally held many in high regard, but these were values he could appreciate. Even if a tad hypocritically.]

No. As silly as it sounds, peace isn't for everyone. Especially so if you're so used to the opposite, or if you have a particularly chaotic nature, like [sigh] so many of your companions.

And with someone as you described to look up to, I can see how peace might be...difficult to accept.

[flicks another flower in his direction, shrugging]

But if you have to ask, then the concept clearly bothers you.

[He nods his head and eats another flower.]

Pops wanted us to be able to have peace. He fought hard for it. So I mean... it's not that I hate the idea of peace. It just doesn't seem attainable.

If Thatch tries to take on all the bad things so that the rest of us don't have to, then I've always been the one fighting the wars so the others didn't have to.

And I like chaos... I think.

[He shakes his head a little in thought.] I know I like fighting. [Everything about it almost. As long as there was someone strong enough to put up a good fight and--] But not without reason. [He fought to protect things, just like Whitebeard did, just like his Pops taught him.]

Aye. To not have to fight... I cannot be that yet. [There's a war on seven fronts back home, and even in this world, he's got to keep fighting so Ace can survive a little longer. So Thatch can have a home even if Pops isn't there.]

[He looks up at Naesala again, almost too much like a puppy all told.] You know how to fix it?

There's always going to be someone who thinks they have the right to control or wield their power over others. True peace is just a fantasy. [Just something where he had to throw his two cents in and agree with at the same time.] There's always a need to fight, so I think you can busy yourself with your battles for a long time coming.

[Because as much as he likes Marco so far, that self-righteous attitude is always going to be something he hates. Aren't pirates supposed to be less noble that this?

Well, it's his family he's talking about. So maybe Naesala can understand more than he ever wanted to.]

Fix what? Serenes' effects or your aversion to peace? As far as I'm concerned, there's no need to 'fix' the latter.

I wanna go back to fighting all the things. Not just flowers.

[This is worth noting because Marco has done an amazing job at making sure just the right amount of flowers were eaten or used so that the population could stay stable.]

[And really, that unnerves him.]

We could always set up a match between you and a particularly robust tree. [Those poor flowers never stood a chance.]

[Okay, but seriously.]

Leaving the island might help. Something most everyone else seems to be perfectly willing to do.

[And are pretty ready to.]

[Looks at Naesala.]

[Then at the sky.]

[THEN JUST ROLLS OVER LAZILY.]

[He's totally good with leaving.]

[he notices how enthusiastic Marco is about getting on this...truly]

Look, I don't want to leave, either. Really, I don't. This is as close to any home as I'm going to get until we sort this world out, and I'm pretty sure we're going to have to drag Leanne back from the deepest heart of the forest at some point.

[stands up, hands on his hips, looking down at the mess]

That being said, I am perfectly capable of getting my talons involved if it means your crew won't come trampling through the thicket just because they have to capture a rogue phoenix.

I should probably make sure Ace doesn't get bored enough to try to eat the island single-handed.
