Oh, um, I'm sure I'll be fine. Just fine!

[Except her hair will be a nightmare so maybe she should just stand under the umbrella. Would that be more polite? What's ruder, accepting what may just have been an offer made out of politeness or refusing one that was meant genuinely?]

How long have you known Smoker?

A few months? Um...[She counts them off on her fingers.] A little over three months, though it sort of feels like longer than that. He reminds me a lot of someone I knew from back home.

[He's not really exactly the same, there are plenty of differences, but there are enough similarities for it to be a comfort to have him around.]

Two of them? [makes an amused sound] Unfortunate.

[and then because seeing her standing there getting wet is bothering him, he climbs out of the hold and offers her the umbrella for herself]

[It's harder to politely refuse an umbrella when it's offered by someone towering over you, so she accepts it wordlessly with a polite bow and tries not to be too freaked out by Kuzan's height. Having a familiar topic to talk about helps.]

No, not really. He wasn't the sort of guy who focused on ideals like that. He cared more about what was actually in front of him, even though he wasn't always the best at showing it.

[She can't help but scowl a little at that. For all that she treasured Ujiyasu's wisdom and guidance, he could have been a little nicer about it...]

[he knows he's looming. He can't really do anything else under the circumstances. He'd sit on the deck, but as it's wet, he's not inclined to do so]

I'm the same, really! Things like that are too complicated for me, so I just worry about being strong enough to protect what's important to me and live a life my lord would be proud of.

[In truth, there is more to the answer than that and she's sorted a lot of it out for herself in the time that she's been here just by virtue of having to explain herself over and over again, but when asked the question directly like this, this is all she can come up with. Like she said herself, she's not the deepest of thinkers.]

I guess I ended up on this ship partly because I don't think he'd be very proud of the way I'd been living. He'd have been like "What are you wasting your time gallivanting around for, brat? You really haven't grown up at all, have you?" if he saw what I was doing. I don't think he'd buy into the whole pirate thing. Freedom sounds good, I guess, but you can't answer to just yourself and your friends. You have to learn to see how what you do affects the bigger picture. If you have strength or talent, you need to find a purpose for it otherwise it's wasted.
