Marco quickly set up a couple of kegs at the ready for the drinking party. Because it was just plain necessary, and a lot like old times. The last two weeks were still weighing on Marco's mind. War, Peace, phoenixes. Was it a good idea to really enjoy war so much? Was it a bad one? Maybe it was inevitable, so he might as well enjoy it. Like life, right? Or should he not encourage it just because it was amusing?

It was too much of a headache, that's why he was just going to drink.

He also set up some non-alcoholic drinks for Leanne and everyone else. Green tea, fruit juices, but they were all clearly marked.

Marco gave a quick piercing whistle. "OI SPADES! Roll call and drinking games!"

And maybe drunk board games, he would blame that on Ace though.

"Fiery, feisty, and fun," Marco stuck his tongue out, "The four 'f's." Even though he only said three words so far.

"And the fourth?"

"Friends!" a deceptively innocent grin, but he means it.

"Well maybe when we meet up, then." If...really.

"Aye," a distant look. He was glad Chandra was planning to take Thatch and Ace with her no matter what, but it left him a little jealous too. Either way, part of him was going to be divided. A lot of the family was still back in their world, when they should all be together. "She'd never get over the idea of Ace being Captain," he laughed softly. It was an exaggeration. They'd all been planning to help Ace be Pirate King if he wanted it, and really the only thing that had changed that was Thatch's death and the way it happened. Still, the expression on her face would be priceless, and he liked imagining it.

"The others would roll with it a little easier I think. But Haruta is kind of the runt of the crew, so she liked having Ace around to baby a little, since otherwise we all kind of baby Haruta a bit, eh."

Chandra set her mug down and gave Marco a quizzical look. It wasn't really like him to be that distant, and far be it for her to pry. Especially not during a party.

"Well, how short is she, given how tall you and Thatch and Namur are?"

Marco turned with a grin, and held his hand up to the horizontal line of the tattoo on his chest. "Our little frog prince, yoi." He relaxed with both hands behind his head, "I don't really have favorites, but if I did, she, Ace, Thatch, Namur, and Izou would be high up there. She's one of the few who actually remembers Rogers' days still. Vista and Jozu do too, of course, but Jozu's very serious, and Vista outdoes me with flowers."

"And, I'm probably going to sound dumb. But who's Roger?"

"The Pirate King," a wry grin, "The first one I mean." He rubs the back of his neck, "It's a touchy subject around Ace. All right let's see, the reason everyone acknowledged Pops as the strongest man in the world was because he held his own against Roger. Roger was the first and so far only pirate crew to make it all the way to the end of the Grand Line and come back alive. Mostly he was a lot like Ace's little brother, but don't tell Ace. His first mate, Silvers Rayleigh and I were... are... pretty good friends. But he had a few brats in his crew, like Shanks." Marco puffs cheeks out and blows out air, trying to think on how to summarize it all.

"That's another thing not to tell Ace. Ace hates Roger for creating the pirate era, and Ace did everything he could to make the era known as Whitebeard's era," another wry grin, "And we'll always love him for that." Think think think. "Roger left his treasure One Piece, and at his execution, he told the world to go look for it."

Marco's gaze fell to the deck. "Pops did too, eh? His final fuck you to the World Government. He all but outright said Ace's kid brother was going to be the one to find it too. And if he had said that, it'd have been that much harder on the kid." The Will of the D, Marshall, Ace, ugh...

It's too much and Marco shakes his head, trying to clear the thoughts cluttering it. "A lot of people, like Ace, thought Pops and Roger were just enemies. But that wasn't it really. They were friends. Roger really shook up the world though. Even more than Pops in some ways. It's almost funny in a way. He left a lot of mess of things. When he told all the pirates to go looking for One Piece, a new breed of pirates were born. Ruthless fucks who would sooner kill for a berri as look at you. Pops was friends with King Neptune, the leader of Fishman Island, where Nam-chan's from, and when we went back there it was... terrible." He closes his eyes for a little bit and softly shakes his head again with a sigh. "Nay, I can't really blame it on Roger though. The tenryuubito provide a market, and dumbass pirates will do what they do."

He clenches his jaw, despite the steady stream of words, "That's why I still hate most rookies I suppose. None of them know what piracy used to be. They're changing the meaning of the word and they don't even know the basics." A small growl and he sighs. "But Silvers, Roger's first mate, Rayleigh, he keeps an eye around Sabaody for the fishmen and mermaid children who go up to Sabaody to look at the amusement park and trees there. It's dangerous because of all the pirates and slavers, but have you ever met a kid who wasn't a little reckless?" Another wry grin and he runs a hand through his hair.

"That's how Pops came to be known as the strongest man in the world. We put the islands we could keep safe under our flag's protection and no one dared cross him." He bites his tongue with a sudden surge of frustration almost akin to guilt. And who was going to protect them now?

The story is pretty interesting, all things considered. Chandra's heard tales like that throughout the Multiverse and people like Roger are easily comparable to the myriad of heroic outlaw figures all planes seem to have. But at the same time, those people are distant and...quite frankly so disconnected from Planeswalkers...that they almost seem insignificant at first, confined to a single world like they are.

But then, it's also those kinds of people who become friends with people like her, and if they don't become Planeswalkers themselves then they travel the Multiverse with their friends. Gerrard Capashen and the crew of the Weatherlight came to mind, as does the legendary magician Barrin, or Jaya Ballard, the Pyromancer all others look up to. Roger, to her, sounds like that sort of man. Someone who'd changed an entire world just by doing what he loved best. Of course, he clearly hadn't had a Planeswalker...but he was certainly influencing one now through people like Marco.

Chandra's hand reaches out for Marcos and she gives it a squeeze. The frustration is evident there, and the anger at losing his father and brothers in a war with people who wanted control. Greedy, powerhungry fucks like the Order of Heliud.

"Nothing wrong with being a rookie," she says, "if they've got good steady hands to guide them. We were all kids once, you know. It's no excuse for being bloodthirsty and those fucks are going to get theirs in the end. Same for people stupid enough to make brash claims they can't back up. Either way, this Roger guy? Sounds like just the sort of man who'd wind up as a Planeswalker. Or traveling with one of us, at least. Hell, most of the people from your world are the right type. It's probably the reason I can put up with you guys."

"Aye, maybe," he laughed softly. "If he hadn't been dying, he probably would have traveling through entire planes or worlds. Hell Ace and his brother have now, eh? D's are all like that, I swear." A small huff as Marco refills both their drinks.

"Probably another dumb question, but Ds?" Chandra clearly wants a crash course in One Piece.

"Family name. It's a middle initial thing. Ace, Luffy, their grandfather: Monkey D. Garp, the leader of the revolution: Monkey D. Dragon, Gol D. Roger," his eyes dropped flat again, "Marshall D. Teach."

"I take it the last one is not as good a guy as the rest?"

A calming breath, and Marco nodded, closing his eyes.

"He's one of the older ones I mentioned. Old enough to remember Roger. He fought back to back with us to defend Fishman Island... Fuck."

Marco dragged a palm down his face. "Some of it I still can't tell you yet, because I haven't told the others." He rubbed the bridge between his eyes. "But there's only one devil fruit of any given power at the world in a time. If someone wanted to be the phoenix like me, they'd have to kill me first."

Marco drank down his rum and moved to lean on the railing and look out at the ocean. It wasn't the right ocean in some ways. It smelled different, less salty, more squiddy, but at least it was ocean. "Teach spent thirty years hiding who he really was to all of us. That's why... mah... well..." a small sigh, and Marco ran a hand through his hair, "I suppose I've always been a little bit paranoid. It takes me awhile to warm up to people. But even I didn't think twice about calling him a brother or nakama."

He shot her a sidelong glance. He can't seem to form the basic words. For all that he's circling around it, spiralling like a hawk, actually diving into the depths of it seems too hard. Only one way to do it. "He stabbed Thatch in the back and stole the darkness devil fruit from him." Marco's jaw clenched hard, and then his fist which also lit up with blue flames. "You know how Ace and I feel about revenge. I've been getting revenge since before Teach was ever in the crew. He broke the only unforgivable rule no pirate can come back from. For what? Power?" Marco's shoulders ripple with blue flames, like a breeze pushing them from one side to another before he lets it all go.

"He was in Ace's division. Second. I knew him longer, but..." Marco looked back out at the ocean hollowly. "Pops was dying. If I left to hunt him down .... and then if Pops went...." he shook his head. "Ace went after him instead. We thought maybe he could do it because he's a D too, eh?" That wasn't the truth. But when they couldn't stop Ace no matter what, without chasing him down and locking him up, without stopping him from being himself, without risking everyone else too, the only thing they could do was have faith in him and lie to protect his pride.

A ton of information and a flood of emotion, and Chandra really has no idea what to make of it. Marco is clearly really...really strained by thinking of this guy. And hearing what he's done, she can't really blame him. This is the kind of guy she'd kill on sight, just for his views on power and perverting it.

"And that's when...everything went to hell for Ace," she finishes with a trace of anger in her voice.

"For all of us," Marco nodded, looking distant again.

"There's another pirate emperor, one of the yonkou, like Pops, named Shanks. Red-haired Shanks. I've known him since he was ah jeez... ten or twelve. And that makes me feel old, let me tell you," he shook his head. "He gave Ace's brother that straw hat he's so fond of, and Marshall gave Shanks the famous three scars over his eye. Teach was always ruthless. The rest of us were just playing around, but Teach lost his temper and Roger got pissed." Another headshake. "That's ancient history. But when he heard that we sent Ace chasing down Teach, he sent us a rookie messenger to ask us to call Ace back." What a fucker. As if they even could. "Pops told him to come himself, and he actually did. Even though it risked sparking several wars, eh?" He rubbed his chin.

"When we heard Ace fell, Teach turned him over to the marines to earn their trust. Because they are really just that stupid, yoi. They put him in their prison version of hell, and laid a trap for us," Marco rubbed the back of his neck. "I still find Shanks a pain, but he helped me make the memorial for Ace after the war when I was dealing with a million things. And he even convinced the marines to let us have Ace and Pops back, eh?"

"...wait, he worked with the marines? Teach, I mean." Excuse her, that's kind of blasphemous. "Shanks sounds different. A bit like this guy I know from another plane. Venser. Weird guy, but always tries to preach peace and negotiation."

"Kind of. Mostly he just conned them. They should have been smart enough to see that if he was willing to con Pops, he'd con anyone, but they're stupid. Beats the hell out of me how he still gets people to ally with him. He has a whole crew with him now, pirates are stupid." Marco's eyes flash irritably and he shakes his head, thinking about Shanks instead.

"Aye," he nodded his head, "Sounds like Shanks. He's always doing that too. He went to head off Kaidou from attacking us on our way out at least, so I guess it has some uses. Sometimes. The rest of the time it's just annoying like the rest of him."

"And sounds like you wouldn't mind Shanks turning up here," Chandra guessed. She already got that Teach...well, he'd be kill-on-sight.

"Oh hell no," Marco scowled. "He's so damn annoying! And if he was here without his keepers he'd be as bad as Ace's little brother. Except without the Straw Hat crew to keep him busy!"

More scowling, "I wouldn't mind Dark King -- Silvers Rayleigh I mean, showing up. Nor Benn Beckman, if I had to have someone from Shanks' crew, but there's a lot of bad blood between their sniper and Vista. And Shanks is damned annoying. He's not all bad, just...." he spread his hands with a shrug, "A pain."

Chandra cackled and shook her head. "You know you jinxed it right? Shanks'll be here soon, just because you said that. And who the hell calls themselves Dark King? Are all of the people from your world going to show up with weird titles?"

Marco shuddered at the thought. "Don't say that," a face palm. "I don't know how to handle that guy. I'll just duck behind Ace and use him as a drinking shield I guess."
