[And then Ace groaned and kicked in one of the cabin doors, sending splinters everywhere.]

His "confused and hungry" theory just fell flat as quickly as he came up with it. This kid knows his name, expects him to do things, and is definitely incredibly angry. And strong. That door's not gonna fix easy. Working for the Triple Threats with Mako, he's seen a share of broken doors and threats of violence, but somehow that doesn't make it all rest any easier with him. Bolin stays frozen for a beat, because his immediate instinct is to duck out of the way somewhere to decrease his chances of getting into serious trouble-- only there's a big lack of earth to bend. And places to run. He straightens up and takes a hesitant step forward instead.

This isn't the street. The ship's full of kids who don't seem hurt. Maybe the rules for getting by aren't the same here. ]

What did you do that for? That door has to belong to somebody, right?

It's my door. I'm the captain, after all. [He added, beginning to pick his nose.] ... I'll fix it later.

[So, he started really paying attention to Bolin. His finger still stuck up his nose with determination, Ace began to let his mood subside.]

...Relax. You're one of my crewmates. I don't hurt crewmates unless they're Marco, because he's being a jerk right now.

That... sort of sounds better, I guess? Except for Marco. [ What's happening anymore. ] I guess my problem is, I don't remember joining anybody's crew? I think I'd remember meeting you for sure.

[Ace tilted his head and stared at Bolin.]

Yeah, a lot of the crew forgot being adults. You guys're usually much older. Like, you're... I dunno how old you are, but you were close to my age and I'm supposed to be 20.

You're twenty? I'm sort of around twenty? [ He is about 90% sure he should not believe that. Even if it sounds really, really cool and interesting, and he bets he's probably a pretty great adult. Yeah. ] Wow, I guess we all look really good for our ages, then! But I wouldn't mind trading being young for remembering becoming a pirate. Or remembering... how to sail.

[ He's pretty sure that knowing how sailing works would be a huge plus right about now. ]

Eh, don't worry about the sailing part. I could sail this ship by myself if I needed to. [Given the fact that he could put holes in it pretty well, anyway. Sailing and destroying were two totally interchangeable skills.]

Anyway, I don't really think you're that much into the pirate thing. We talked about it before and you were... I dunno what's the word for it. Neutral? I don't think that works.

Right, sure. [ Neutral. That sounds... neutral. ] But am I cool?

[ Top of his priorities list, pretty much. ]

[Ace stared at Bolin awhile. The moments ticked away. He stuck his pinky in one nostril.]

...Sort of?

Only sort of? [ UGH, way to go, future self. Still alive, part of a pirate crew, a pet that rides around on his shoulders, and still only sort of cool. He bet Mako would be super cool in the future. Shameful. Truly shameful. ] I'll just have to make up for myself, I guess! However somebody even does that.

Well, I mean--you're not that cool at times. Mostly because some of the stuff you say confuses me and I can't tell if it's cool or not. [He wasn't sure if that made things sound better or even more courteous or not.]

But, you're pretty strong, so that's cool.

Ohhhh. I can work with confusing. It's almost being mysterious. And mysterious is pretty cool. Not as good as being strong, though! [ Strength matters. Especially for earthbenders. ] So... what about you? And Mako? And the rest of the crew? Whatever's... going on with the whole ship, I mean. Things seem a little crazy here, you know?
