He'll take a seat beside the bed and give her his biggest, warmest smile.

"Good, means that they're healing. And...well...you don't need to thank me. I mean, really. I'm just glad you're alright. That's important, y'know. Making sure people I like are alright."

Well, that smile was just too contagious for her to ignore, and she finds herself smiling warmly back at him. Instead of just staring at the tray, Selphie picks up some cake, "No, really. I keep thinking about it and - Well, I don't know. I will find a way to make it up to you, eventually. Want some cake?"

"Alright," he says with a wider smile. "I wont turn down a favor, of course." At the offer of cake, he shakes his head. "It's for you, dear. I want you to eat and get back to your old self. Take as much as you like."

"I'll do anything at all! You just say it and I'll do it! Any favour, doesn't matter - I need to pay you back somehow. So please, just let me know whenever, okay?"

She nods her head, though she doesn't like the idea of not sharing. She'll probably end up leaving a little bit, just in case he changes his mind. Happily, Selphie eats up some of the cake, smiling as she does. As she licks a finger clean, she nods to the book on the tray, "Whatcha reading?"

"Certainly. I'll let you know, of course. Promise."

He watches her eat and when it becomes apparent that she's not going to eat it all, he takes the leftovers. It is cake after all.

"Reading? Oh, this. It's just a collection of stories I found. Though it's for you, not me. Figured you'd like to have something to entertain you while your resting."

The title of it is The Land of Make Believe, and it's full of fairy tales and such. Not the children's versions, but the originals.

"Oh! Thank you!" She picks up the book and leaves through some of the pages. "I turned my other books into paper decorations for Yuuki's birthday... So this is just what I need!" As she turns some more pages, she reads the odd line here and there, "This looks real good, too! Have you read it?"

"Yeah, of course. Many times. It's full of some really great stories. Beauty and the Beast and St. George and the Dragon are some of my favorites. Adventure and romance and all sorts of wonderful things. Though some of them are horror stories, too."

"Okay! I'll make sure that I read those one first! I love those kinda stories!" Selphie holds the book, just looking at it for a moment. "This is all very sweet of you, Doctor..."

And as she says such she can feel her eyes welling with tears - at this stage, she's very sure that she doesn't deserve any of these kindnesses. But she clears her throat and manages a quick smile, "We must be such a nuisance! Useless mortals like me!"

When her eyes start shining, he turns to her very quickly, quirking his head to one side. He smiles sadly, and shakes his head.

"First of all, you're not useless. Not at all. Second, no, you're not a nuisance. Humans...well, frankly I admire you. To me, you're such a dynamic group, always changing, always inventing, so full of hope and life. And that, for me? That's something more beings could really use. Hope. Life. Change. You lot give me a reason to smile and laugh and do what I do. I'd hardly call that useless, or a nuisance. And I don't know why you'd think that. You least of all should be worrying about that."

Selphie fidgets with the corner of the tray as he speaks, finding it all quite difficult to believe. Especially given what has just happened, "Hope and life? Even when we get captured and sent to our death?" She sighs heavily and shakes her head - since when had she been so pessimistic? She doesn't like the way it sounds, but the whole ordeal has left her pretty miserable.

"Sorry, sorry. You came here all nice and happy. Let's stay with nice and happy."

"Especially then, it gives me a reason to get up and do something. I do like keeping active. And if you, or anyone I like needs my help, then I'm all up for helping. Gives me life, and hope that one day there won't be a need for one person to hurt another."

Selphie can't help but smile then, a big, warm, genuine smile. It makes such a change to talk to someone on this ship that isn't angry all the time, who doesn't moan about everything all the time. Having him there is really quite refreshing. "You can be quite adorable - but, I bet you know that already too."

Well he's definitely broody, and angry and moody. But he helps that to himself. Now, he blinks at the compliment. "I...did not, actually. Thank you. I'm...glad you think so." He's not really sure what to say. "You...are too."

The fact that she can have a conversation with him without someone shouting, or getting hurt, is definitely a bonus. Especially when she feels like she does now. "Aha! Looks like I finally found something that I knew that you didn't!" She giggles at his reaction and sips at her tea, "Thanks!"

Well he's certainly good for that...

"Yes...yes I suppose you did." He buries his face in his own tea to avoid showing her a blush. He doesn't do that. "and you're welcome."

"Don't worry, I won't be taking your title of Most Clever Man in the Universe just yet!" She makes a noise that's the closest thing to laugh she's made since the whole ordeal.

Then she puts her empty cup on her tray and leans forward on her bunk as she watches him, a teasing smile on her face, "Doctor, you're not... *blushing* are you...?"

"Well good, I'd hate to lose it," he replies, and then shakes his head at her other question. "No...no, 'course not."

He totally is.

Selphie puts her tray aside so she can sit on the edge of the bed, closer to where he's sitting in the chair. "Are you sure?" She giggles and reaches forward to poke lightly at his cheek, "It's nice. It suits you!"

"Sure I'm sure." He blinks a little at the poke and laughs. It's good to see her already perking up a little bit, so he'll play along. "And why d'you suppose it suits me then?"

"Eh?" That wasn't a question she had been expecting. "Well, I mean, not that you're not already very handsome or anything but.. cause you've got pale skin it looks nice with some colour and...kinda brightens up your eyes." And now it's her turn to be blushing.

Well he wanted to throw her off her guard, of course. "Does it? Well, thank you dear. But I don't think my eyes could ever be quite as bright as yours, you know. You've got that mischievous spark, after all. A real troublemaker, you."

"A...mischievous spark?" That made her blush all the more, placing her hands on her cheeks, feeling the heat in her palms. "I'm not a trouble maker... Not really. Uh, I mean, apartfrom all that trouble on the boat and stuff..."

"Sure you are, lookit you, saying things just so I'll blush." He grins and reaches out to pat her shoulder gently. "And no, that wasn't your fault."

"Huh? I would never do a thing like that!" Look, she even put on her best innocent face, wide eyes and everything. When he patted her shoulder, her expression faltered slightly, "Hmm. I know..."

Shaking his head, he squeezes one more time. "I mean it, seriously. Not your fault. And I don't want you to think it was. The military here...well...insane isn't quite the right word because all military organizations are...but they certainly aren't normal. The whole ambush, this thing...it was a mess. And really, it was partially my fault for not thinking of it, and not being there to stop it."
