Welcome to the Host Club

Who: Absolutely anyone
What: The Host Club is open for business!
Where: Antoinette, currently docked at Isla Empieza
When: February 7th - 14th (+ additional dates for crew members)

Status: Mostly open, some sections closed to crew members
Warnings: None. Will add if necessary.

Loans have been issued, furniture has been supplied, and food had been bought.

The deck of the Antoinette is plainly decorated. There are a few rugs about, but, for the most part, small tables are arranged with couches and chairs. Platters of food are waiting, mostly sandwiches and sweets. Little snacks. There's plenty of hot water kept on hand, too, for tea or commoner's instant coffee.

The Host Club are looking their best, even though their best might be a little more ragged than they would otherwise appear.

Posters have been put up around town, advertising the opening of the Royal Host Club, specifying the Antoinette's location, and disclosing the offer of refreshments.

On the 13th, things will only get more interesting when a bowl of candy appears overnight and adds to the Host Club experience.

She smiles too.]

Haruno Sakura. [Before she moves to the food, she is a bit curious. And looking around, she's a bit lost as to the purpose of it other than it being a place to hang out and talk.]

So what exactly... is a Host Club? We don't have them where I'm from.

Miss Sakura. [She'll get her fill of being called "Princess" elsewhere, and he'll see how she takes it then and either modify his address or not.

He makes a small gesture, leading her to the food table as he speaks.] A host club provides companionship.

We understand that personalities are complementary. What makes one person relax riles another, so we offer several types of personalities -- whatever it is that will make a person feel most comfortable.

Especially here, we are all strangers and lead such isolated lives. Having someone in whom we can confide is a relief, and that is what the Host Club provides.

[Miss Sakura is far more acceptable so she doesn't feel embarrassed. There's actually a subtle pleasure she gets from being called 'Miss'. Being a ninja, sometimes simple things like that are rare.

She follows and listens.]

Companionship... [She tests the word.]

Is there a reason you use the word companionship instead of friendship?

Several.

[He isn't going to lie to a prospective client.]

We become friends with most of our guests, it's true, but this is a business. Someone who is a stranger and someone who is a regular will find very little difference in how they're treated.

Friendships must mature -- we offer our time regardless of how long we've known someone.

We also are a business, and friendships are rarely for sale.

[What the hell was this? Tamaki had said there was no charge but she had no idea it was like this. It's strange. Probably because it reminds her of a brothel that's for women and less promiscuous. Hopefully.

She doesn't want to think about it.]

It wouldn't be a friendship if it was for sale, it would be companionship.

[Kyouya will admit to the similarities to a brothel. Tamaki will not.]

Which is why I use the word.

Our clients come here because there are few expectations. We accept them as themselves. The only thing we will not tolerate is rudeness to other guests or to the hosts.

Other than that? There are no pressures, whereas even friends might feel those. We listen, we converse, we serve. Whatever our guests need from us.

Hmmmm, makes sense.

[She concedes, looking thoughtful. You didn't call... one of those girls your friend after... whatever it is men did with them.]

You probably don't get to be yourselves though, do you?

We do, actually. That's why we specialize for types of personality. So we can be ourselves [to some degree, at least] while also providing guests with what they want.

Someone interested in quiet conversation, for instance, would likely prefer to avoid the "mischievous" or "boy lolita" type, while those looking for more animated company usually don't care to spend their time with the "cool" type.

I'm guessing you're the cool type?

[Kyouya gives a soft chuckle and bows his head.]

Correct.

And... [She looks around the rest of the deck, trying to figure out the rest of the types. She points at Kaoru and Hikaru and since there was only one plural type.]

Little devils, maybe.

[Gestures at Honey, who does look like a boy.]

Mmmmn, boy lolita.

[Not sure what lolita is. Her eyes settle on Haruhi next, and it takes longer for her to decide between the Prince and the Natural. The brown hair finally has her making a decision.]

Natural... I think. Which leaves-- the Prince, over there.

You're very good.

[Kyouya offers a smile.]

Each one offers something different. Tamaki, the twins, and Honey-senpai are all very lively, though their kind of energy varies.

Tamaki -- the princely type -- is the hopeless romantic. He's full of charm and compliments, though he's always sincere. Hikaru and Kaoru are full of mischief, but there's no malice. They play tricks, but they have the best of intentions. [And that is a bare-faced lie, but... not totally with guests. Just... with everyone else.] Honey-senpai is childlike, enthusiastic and sweet. All energy and all happiness.

[Sakura does like praise, so she returns it and it softens a little as he explains the four. She knows pranksters well and that type has grown on her. As for the rest of them;]

They sound like good people. That means the Natural would be similar to you.

Did all of you decide to start a Host Club?

Haruhi is calmer than the others, yes, but he's far more... open than I generally am. The natural is a flirt, though not fond of the grandiose displays of the prince. Sweet but sedated, complimentary but understated. Of those we have here, I'm the most reserved. My guests usually prefer conversation to compliments, discussion to devotion. Which isn't to say the others don't talk to their guests -- they do. They're all very intelligent. My guests usually come, though, for conversation, rather than for overtly flirtatious attention.

[Which would do as an explanation. To a potential client, he couldn't exactly state that he was the "unattainable" one. The ice king who was distant but showed brief signs of affection and fondness. That the appeal of him was drawing him out.]

It was all Tamaki's idea. We run it rather successfully back home and were in need of funds, so we thought it would be best to restart it here.

[Ah. Tamaki. Yes, now she gets it.]

You are good for conversation.

[And it's a nice breather, glad that someone on the ship isn't as intense as Tamaki. Who was... charming, in his own way. He was the Prince type.]

It's nice all of you arrived here to do it together again. Then I guess Tamaki-san just asked if everyone was interested in making a Host Club?

[Kyouya chuckles, giving a small bow of gratitude at the remark, ducking his head slightly.]

He recruited everyone for it where we come from. He dealt with that, I concerned myself with the logistics of running it.

Here, it was a joint venture when we realized our funds were suffering and we have few other skills that suit this place.

I'm sure you could apply them in other areas.

And we try, certainly.

I have some knowledge of medicine, but most crews here have their own doctors. So while it is useful, monetarily we don't benefit. Honey-senpai is a martial artist, which keeps us safe, but, again, we don't gain a profit. Hikaru and Kaoru make clothes, which allows them a moderate income here, but we can't expect that to support us all.

The Host Club, however, should draw a profit, and it allows us all to work together in equal measures.

Oh! You studied medicine?

[THAT'S HER JAM. ALSO MARTIAL ARTS.

She notices that Tamaki isn't mentioned to have any skills. He could probably charm anybody to do his bidding.]

Those are all really useful skills though. Even if you don't make a profit from it, you're probably saving money. Especially here.

My family is in the medical profession. I haven't formally studied it yet, but those around me have, and I've learned a lot from them.

[Tamaki's skill is people, in equal measures to Kyouya's unmentioned business skill. This? This is their best way to use those skills to provide for them all, even if the going may be a bit rougher here than at Ouran.]

[If Sakura strikes it rich, she'll try and come to the Host Club as often as she can. If not to just talk to Kyouya because he really is good for conversation. But maybe to talk to everyone else too.]

It seems like it's sort of a necessity here. To know basic first aid, at least. Someone, Bepo-san, told me there weren't very many medics around.

I know there's a good deal of magic about, some of it healing, I believe.

[Which fascinates him... while also being something he remains very suspicious about. Simply because it's well outside his understanding.]

Speaking of which, in a way. I hope you've found someone to travel with. It can be difficult when you first arrive.

[Magic, huh? She has some of that magic. But if people have the ability to heal then that's a good thing.

She'll keep an eye out for it.]

Luckily, it was easy for me. I'll be sailing on the Murderess from now on with a couple of my teammates from home.

I'm glad.

[And he offers a smile, then.]

I arrived without knowing anyone here. It made settling in rather difficult.

[She is too.]

It seems like you've made up for it though.

[She looks around at all the couches and the food and the hosts with what guests were here.]

This really does look great. I've been having a nice time so far.
