Super. The captain of his new found ship dies while Mako has to watch. It’s not the first time he’s seen death first hand, but unlike the last time he might be able to save him. Fire gathers about and in his hands, ready to strike at the sailor-
But Mako’s stopped in his tracks when there’s no bleeding.
"How-"
Shaking his head, saving that question for later, Mako whirls around to give a spinning kick with fire trailing after his foot to send the sail flying and he follows through with slinging a ball of fire after him to send him into the water.
"You okay?" He just took out like twelve guys at once, but a sword is kind of sticking out of him so it almost feels stupid to ask.
Almost.

The other soldiers Ace had taken out earlier were beginning to recover, looking for their guns and swords. In the middle of the chaos, Ace looked over the ship and then turned back to Mako.
"...Oi, this isn't the main gunship. Have you seen their captain?"
no subject
"No, I haven’t." He gave precise, and perfectly executed roundhouse that shot a blast of fire to knock one of the recovering soldiers into and over the railing. "I’m going to take this ship down from the inside out if I can. But if the captain of their fleet goes down, they might retreat."
That would make everything a bit easier, but Mako’s never one to expect easy things to come his way.

Which was likely. The Marines Ace had met before would definitely sacrifice one of their own ships to try and ram or damage enemy ships if they knew they were going down and he thought to anticipate it.
"Just make sure it's inoperable for the moment--so, burn the sails, smash the helm and jam the rudder. Make it a rock in the water!"

"Got it." Whatever would give the Sun and Moon in the best advantage was all he wanted out of this battle. That and having everyone in the crew intact.
The sails wouldn’t take much, two fire jabs that flowed from one another with ease set two of their sails ablaze. But that was all Mako was able to do just then, he was forced to duck and flip out of the way of a sword that almost had his neck.
Four non-benders on one firebender sounded easy when chi-blocking wasn’t involved, but weapons definitely tipped that scale.

"Shoot, do you know what guns are?" Of course, Ace had hoped Mako would have gotten the gist of them by now. Explaining them so soon in the battle would have definitely thrown off their pace, especially since he gave Mako a command.

"Guns? You mean those-" and his next word was lost in the sound of a gunshot, one that grazed his hip. Mako was forced to take a step forward to keep his balance from the sudden wound, and shot a blast of return fire. Literally.
"Yeah, those." He said while sucking in a breath.

In the following few seconds as Mako regained himself, Ace had punched and kicked the remaining sailors through the floorboards, into the cabins and off of the boat without summoning even a single flame. He lost the jovial, casual tone he had worn before in favor of a much crueler sort of stare.
"I'm sorry about that," He apologized quickly, walking back to Mako as their ship had grown more silent. Ace took a knee quickly, reaching into one of his pockets for a roll of bandages and metal tabs to hold them still. "Do you think it hit the bone?"

"Don’t tell me they all have guns." A good number of them did, it was more of a sarcastic comment to draw away from the pain that was starting to settle in. Pulling the cloth away with his fingers where the bullet grazed him revealed a dark red wound that was bleeding through his clothes.
"Can’t tell, but I think got off lucky on this one. Thanks." He went to take the bandages so he could dress it. Stop the bleeding at least until he got to an actual healer.

Raising both arms, Ace coated his hands in a black sheen--his armament will. Ace could have used his color of the conqueror to cripple them, but he didn't know how strong they were, mentally. If they were capable of resisting, they could have used the opening to attack again.
"Just remember, they won't fire at all if you're moving enough. Once they shoot, they'll take awhile to reload," He slowly edged closer to Mako, so he could provide better shielding.
"But, I ought to ask." Since, well, Ace had a dumb idea, "Do you think you could tuck and roll right now?"

Miniature cannons. All he needed in his life.
At least the reload time for it gives him something to work with.
"Yeah, don't worry about me." As usual, Mako was intent on making sure he wasn't dragging anyone down and pressed into the bandage, grinding his teeth together so he could do just that. Once he was out of the way, Mako shot of another ball of fire to set one of the other sails on fire.
Whatever Ace wanted him to avoid, he was about to see it first hand while trying to take down any soldiers that came across their way.

Ace caught in his arms, turning once more in a complete circle before he hurled the mast like a javelin, straight through the deck of a ship looking to even out and begin firing. With its bottom section torn out, the crew had no choice other than abandonment. The black tint faded from Ace's hands and his smile relaxed.
"'Cause, it's gonna be tough to stand still on this thing for a bit."
