The Spades will be fighting Corpsemaster, one of the Navy Captains set for the Navy Month's event! There will be a forced retreat on both sides.

*It is a little bit, and when he finally calls attention to it, Selphie realises she was in danger of forgetting what she was actually looking at him for. With a soft blush, Selphie lowers her eyes to look into her lap and shrugs*

Same thing you said to me. Any girl would be lucky to have you.

I'm not sure if I'm ready for that. [Only in the last year or so did he even become comfortable with telling his life story. Romance would be a larger leap for him.] I won't bring much luck to anyone.

Love happens where and when you least expect it, or so I've heard. So maybe it'll just find you some day, and even if you don't feel ready for it and the time, you might realise that being with that person is the best thing ever.

*She grins a little, mostly at herself, but apparently quite amused, still looking out into his room rather than at him*

I dunno about that. You'd make quite an adorable lucky charm! Bringing happiness, and protection!

[Aya smiles softly at her words, because they sound like a G-rated children's movie. It's when she talks about protection that he remembers their last navy battle. His smile falters a bit.]

You had me until the last part.

[booyaka_boom]

*Selphie almost winces when she realises what she's said, and why that might have upset him, or bothered him in some way. She looks at him, apologetic, and shakes her head*

But you are. You did your absolute best for Kairi. Done any more and.. and we would have been mourning you too...

[Aya simply shrugs.]

I would have accepted such a fate. [He almost died before, and has the star-shaped wound on his abdomen as proof.]

[booyaka_boom]

*This admission from him shocks her, eyes wide for a moment as she looks at him, apparently failing to understand. So much so she even manages to look wounded, as well as deeply concerned*

But...why...?

[Her look, while very sad, gives him some slight hope that he would be missed by someone.]

I've done things for revenge that I don't regret, but I'm not proud of. I can't take them back, nor would I even want to. [Assassin for hire. There was little other avenue to take to avenge his family and care for his sister. Besides just...not getting revenge.] If I were to die due to my actions, then it's simply my fate.

Really, Aya? Are you serious?

*Selphie shakes her head, her shock turning into a gentle anger*

Just like that? And you wouldn't care? Just fate. And you, and everyone else should just...accept that you'd happily die?

I never said happily.

[Envisioning himself dying with glee was not what he expected his day to include.]

[booyaka_boom]

No. I'm sorry. You didn't.

*Selphie bows her head slightly, hands curling on her lap*

It's... *strange to her, and maybe a little horrible too, given that she's killed him before and still feels a little miserable about it. But she skips that part when she speaks*

It's just.. it's not fair for you to give yourself a different standard about death than you give to others.

[Aya sighs quietly, knowing that even with an explanation, Selphie would likely still keep her position.]

It may not be fair, but I'm not going to change my mind.

[booyaka_boom]

So if you had died, that would just be fate? But that Kairi died, you can't seem to forgive yourself for?

*Even if he said he wouldn't change his mind, Selphie still thought she'd check. Carefully, she lifts her eyes to him, and she seems rather upset*

What - what about when I - when I... *She swallows hard, finding difficulty in asking her question* When I killed you? Was that a case of 'oh well, it's fate'? Is that why you forgave me? Because you didn't really care? Be..because.. if that's the case you should let me know. Then I can stop feeling so...so miserable about it.

Did you forget that I didn't really forgive you straight away? [He avoided her like the plague for days, knowing it wasn't her fault, but it would be difficult to be around her after something like that. Just thinking about what she was forced to do makes him ill, but doesn't let it show on his face.]

I've lived most of my life fighting for my own cause, no matter what it took. [It obviously meant that Aya doesn't place a lot of worth upon his own life with a statement like that.] That fight meant protecting people. I wasn't able to protect her, so why would I give myself slack?

[Although he holds himself at a higher level than most when it comes to his abilities, it's the opposite with how he values his own life.] If you tried saving her, and failed, would you be as hopeful as you are now? [He looks to Selphie with intent. He really hopes she says 'no', else he'd lose respect for her.]

[booyaka_boom]

*No, she hadn't forgotten that. She'd avoided him too, terrified of how he'd hate her, and of how much more she would hate herseld if she saw him*

The whole crew should have been protecting each other. Kairi isn't your sole responsibility. But no one blames you for what happened to her. Everyone understands that you did what you could. It's only you that can't accept that.

*Selphie drags her eyes away from him at that question, slowly shaking her head no. She'd killed many of her own friends, effectively, when she couldn't stop that missile. And then there was Aya, who she'd directly killed*

Think about how you feel right now. If you'd killed her, that feeling would be tenfold. Maybe more. Then imagine you'd been feeling that way, but she came back, and told you she didn'tvalue her life. Just think, Aya, if Kairi came back right now and told you that she didn't care that she'd died.

*Because, while she knows that Aya is hurting, he has to consider what it feels like, to be so worried and concerned over someone that didn't care. Not that worried and concerned evencut it in terms of how she'd felt*

If she felt that way, then there's no reason for me to make her see otherwise. [While Aya understands, he is a bit put out that he should his thought pattern at the drop of a hat.] She obviously would have struggles of her own that she's still going through. If she wanted help, she would ask.

[He glances away from her, swallowing down those memories of losing his parents and seeing his sister unconscious for years on end, and doing what was necessary. No matter what.]

[Now it's clear that Aya is no longer talking about Kairi.]

*Carefully, Selphie moves further away from him on the bed, looking at the tray and holding it so it doesn't topple over. She'd brought him food and drink, and made him have that. She made him come downstairs and be healed, she made him sit and have his wounds cleaned.He hadn't offered his problems or asked for any of this. With his final statement, he seems to make himself quite clear, and she slowly stands up from the bed*

I understand...

[And Aya can tell when he puts his foot in his mouth. He places a hand on her shoulder, wanting to gain her attention, even if for a short moment.]

It's...nice that you're concerned. [He gives her a faint smile.] Thank you, Selphie.

*With his hand on her shoulder she turns to look at him, but she knows she'll struggle to look him in the eyes, so she looks at his shoulder instead. Nodding slowly, her smile is even fainter than his*

No problem. Just ask if you need anything.

*When she stands she keeps her back turned, taking a deep breath as she walks towards the door. Once at the door, she turns to him, finally having managed to arrange a smile on her face, doing her best to sound chipper*

Just...don't be afraid to ask for help, okay? From anyone.
