Uh...looks like we pissed it off. [his comment was punctuated by a roar, and after the roar ended in a growl, the hydra opened it mouth wide and spewed hot boiling water at the two of them]

Ow, fuck.
[He retaliated by jumping into the air and slashing at the beast's head, aiming for one of it's eyes.]

[it was too slow to avoid Dave's attack completely, though it tried. It ended up getting a slash across it's left eye, causing it to recoil away from the ship and roar in pain. Thash thought that had worked out nicely so he decided to try it again]
Nice one Captain Strider...I'll try to draw its attention over here to the right so you can attack it again!
[when the pain subsided the monster focused on Dave, at least until it heard Thash shouting at it and felt him hit it on the side of the face by throwing one of the dead fish he'd brought back. It turned its attention to him and tried to strike again, faster this time like a snake]

[Dave keeps his eyes on the monster until Thash distracts it. Then he tries to get as far to it's side as he can. He isn't sure how well it'll work to try the same thing twice and he would've preferred to do something different, but maybe the distraction will be enough?
He lunges at the creature again, aiming for it's neck this time. Hitting the eye was a good idea last time, but it isn't going to die from losing it's ability to see.]

[when Dave attacked the monster's neck, it was wide open...however, it's body was covered in thick armor like scales. If Dave had some kind of supernatural strength or piercing ability he might be able to do serious damage, but if all he was working with was human strength behind a normal but sharp katana, the damage would be less severe and only cut into the scales to make it bleed a little]
no subject
Damn.
[And now Dave feels stupid. He should've known better. For a moment he thinks about using his cutlass instead, but it wouldn't do any better. It's thicker, but not at sharp. He steps back and prepares to dodge any attacks the beast throws at him.]
Okay, so... do you have any idea how to kill this thing?
no subject
Those scales are pretty dang thick, huh...well the ship's canons might do some damage though I don't know how to use those ....what about bombs? Do we have any bombs on the ship? [ if not, he started thinking of how maybe they could get a bag of gunpowder and get it to go off in the monsters mouth somehow]
no subject
[Dave has no idea if they have bombs. Probably not. He hasn't seen any. He doesn't have any idea how to use the cannons either, though it shouldn't be too difficult to figure it out. You just put the gunpowder in, put the cannon ball in, and light the fuse, right?]
I can go down and get them ready, but where would I aim? Do you think this thing'll hold still long enough for me to shoot it?
[It seems like it'd be a good idea to aim for the creature's body, but he's only seen tails and a head so far.]
no subject
[after missing them with the tail, the monster hissed... It sounded like it was getting frustrated. It lowered its head to the water and scooped up a mouthful of it, swallowing. Then a few second later it raised its head and sprayed boiling water at them again]
Whatever we do, we should try to do it quick! [thash yelled quickly before diving out of the way and watching Dave to make sure he moved as well]
no subject
[Dave disappears below deck. It doesn't take him long to locate the canons and get one ready. It takes him a few minutes to load it and then he sets off a warning shot. It fails. The small explosion doesn't even move the ball out of the canon. Obviously he didn't use enough gunpowder. Dave has to start all over again.
So he cleans it out and then shoves ten times as much gunpowder into the canon before lighting the fuse. This time the ball clears the canon, but it doesn't get very far. It shoots out about fifteen feet and then makes a nice plunk as it hits the water.]
Oops.
XD
What are you doing down there?? I'm a piece of bait up here and this thing is only getting angrier...!
[as if to reinforce what Thash was saying, it gave a short roar and struck at him like a snake. He managed the scramble out of the way but the monster bit into the railing, cracking and denting it with its huge teeth]
no subject
[So he cleans the damn cannon out and starts over again. Dave puts in a shitton of powder. So much that it's got to work. Either that or explode in his face. He looks out the porthole, aims for the monster's head, and lights the fuse hoping that Thash will be able to keep it still long enough.
When the canon goes off there's a huge explosion and the ball shoots out so fast he doesn't even see it. Dave has no idea how far it will go if it doesn't hit the beast, but if it does it should pack a wallop.]

[he growled and kicked but almost got pulled overboard, only stopping himself when he managed to grab the railing and hold on tight. It resulted in his tail getting slashed up a little by the monster's teeth, but his tail slipped free of its mouth and he stayed more or less on the ship. As he clung to the railing, he heard something in the brief quiet... The sizzling of a lit fuze]
[he yelled at the monster and waved his bleeding tail, now trying to get it to attack. It snarled, opening it's jaws and biting towards him just as Dave's canon went off. The shock was so great Thash closed his eyes and clung to the railing tighter to avoid being shaken off. When he opened them again, he saw a bloody freakish neck stump with the head attached only by a clump of sinews about a meter wide and some scales. He'd practically beheaded the beast. A deep groan vibrated the water from one of the beast's healthy heads as it felt the pain, and its wounded neck with the head flopping grotesquely at its side descended below the water. It began to swim away in defeat. Thash stared down at the porthole Dave had fired from with wide eyes]
Holy CRAP!! You got it, alright....
no subject
[That sure was messy. Dave just stares at the bloody stump for a few seconds. Then he rushes to clean the canon out and reload it again, only to notice halfway through the preparations that the monster swam away.
So he drops everything and heads back up to the deck. There's gun powder everywhere and the area around the canon is a mess. He's just leaving it there for someone else to clean up. Dave is done with canons. He walks out of the cabin and up to Thash.]
That was a close one.
no subject
[he then gradually looked over at Dave with a small smirk] I wasn't sure if you were gonna get that canon goin' or what...but wow, you sure figured it out eventually, hahah...
[he didn't pay much attention to his bleeding tail. Maybe it wasn't hurt very bad]
no subject
[Dave looks at Thash's tail pointedly. The ship can be repaired easily, even if the damage were worse. Ships get wrecked all the time. Luckily Thash's current injury is nowhere near as bad as the one he had the first time Dave met him, but he's seen how Thash reacts to being injured. It's not good to ignore the injury, no matter how minor.]
So you gonna get help with that or are you gonna keep bleeding all over the deck? Pretty sure someone isn't gonna appreciate cleaning that up.
no subject
[at least he seemed relatively calm this time in contrast to how he'd behaved after being impaled with a harpoon] guess I'll go take care of that, then... [he went to go pick up his sword where he'd dropped it earlier first]
