I spent most of mine on clothes...

[She crosses her arms and pouts a little.]

Maybe if we pool what we have left, we could get a pair each. Who knows where we'll end up after this, so this might be our only chance for a while. I mean, you already have a guy, so you don't have to rush, but me...

[She shakes her head. Still no advances on that front.]

Yeah, me too. But the elf costume was totally worth it.

*Yup, that's what she spent most of her money on. A good purchase, in her eyes*

That's a good idea, let's do that!

*Or they could do the pirate thing of stealing, but Selphie still wouldn't feel comfortable with that. She smiles fondly, blushing ever so slightly at the reminder that she already has someone. That shake of Kai's head means that she is failing at her mission though, so she hooks up her arm*

C'mon! We gotta get you shoes and a man!

[Kai lets herself get pulled along. She's not used to being the one getting caught up in other people's enthusiasm (usually it's the other way around), but it's not so bad!]

Right! I've zero luck so far, let me tell you. I never thought I'd be jealous of girls who get their marriages arranged for them. My father's afraid to even try, so I'm stuck striking out on my own.

*Also, holding onto Kai's arm is helping her make sure that she's standing straight and not falling over. But she's managing and happy to stride down to wherever they'll find shoes*

Arranged? What? You mean, like, someone tells them who they're gonna marry?

*There is total outrage obvious here*

[It takes a second to process why Selphie is so mad. Kai's used to it just being the way of things for her social class.]

It's a pretty common thing, especially if you need to make a political alliance or something. I guess peasants and merchants don't really have to do that kind of thing, but for us it's how it's done. Sometimes you get lucky and land a good one or at least one that's never home if he's not, but it's not like you get a whole lot of say in the matter. If you're like me and you're family's not really important, you just sort of have to hope someone notices you.

*Nopes. Selphie doesn't like it, not one bit, and she shows that in the way that she continues to shake her head the whole time that Kai is talking*

That sucks. I mean, seriously, that really sucks. I never heard of anything so stupid in my whole entire life ever.

*Okay, maybe exaggerating slightly, but she does make it sound like she means it. She tilts her head and glances at Kai*

You're not, like, a princess or anything, are you?

[Everyone seems to ask her that eventually. Well, she wouldn't exactly call herself a "princess," though that's probably the closest word to use, but explanations are hard.]

I keep saying that "of good breeding" might be the right way to put it? I don't know. There are girls who are much higher ranking than me, but that doesn't mean I'm not a proper lady myself, you know? No one's gonna get a whole lot of advantage by marrying me off, but I could probably raise my own station a bit if I found a good husband.

Hmm... I don't think I'd like that. I don't have any family, so I guess it doesn't really matter who I marry. Or maybe I won't need to marry anyone at all - but that would be boring.

*She turns to Kai then with a supportive smile and a nod*

But you really should just pick the guy that you want. You could have any awesome guy you want!

If only. [She pouts a bit.] It seems like all the good guys are taken or completely oblivious. I haven't even had any luck here...

Oh well. Gotta keep at it, right?

Completely oblivious? *Selphie raises a brow at that, standing a little taller with the possibility of some excitement* Does that mean you've found a guy but he's just being clueless?

*Because, believe her, Kai, she knows all about that. But she smiles and nods her head*

Uh huh! And I bet new shoes will help!

[Kai waves her free hand absently.]

No, that was back home and I'd never say anything anyway. My friend is totally head over heels for him and even though she's probably never going to say anything about it, that doesn't mean I should step in, you know? She's in love with him. I just think he's gorgeous.

[She sighs.]

And that's about it.

Oh...

*Selphie pauses as she thinks this over. It certainly does all sound quite complicated. She wonders if that's what Quistis felt like with Rinoa around. It must suck. Quite a lot*

But hey! You're here now, with new guys to meet! Ya never know who might be just around the corner! You sure you haven't met anyone here you like?

Pffft. I'm sure. Definitely sure.

[She glowers a bit at that one.]

The guys on my crew are nice enough, yeah, but your captain is something else. Was he raised by wolves? Do they maybe want him back, because you should release him back into the wild where he belongs.

*Selphie just bursts into laughter at that one and shakes her head*

Hmm - I'm not sure. He's definitely a wild one. But it's pretty cute, no? And he means well even if he... Uh - yeah, he could do with slowing down a little. Maybe a pretty girl would do that for him.

*Wink wink - and no, that's not even subtle*

You're not suggesting that I should-- What?! NO! He picked his nose right in front of me! I could never!

[Kai blushes beet red, somehow both embarrassed and offended.]

He did?

*That surprises even Selphie for a moment, and she looks visibly disgusted*

Eww. That is totally gross. He's gonna get in trouble for that.

*Still, she notices the blushing and smirks*

But if he didn't do the nose picking...?

He punched someone in the face and stole their tooth!

[Kai has now passed offended and gone straight to horrified.]

And that was before the nose picking!!

What?!

*Selphie is so outraged by this that she lets go of Kai for a moment and wobbles*

What the hell? Was he drunk? He's such an idiot... Sometimes it weirds me out that that guy is my captain.

*Still, she attaches herself again and smiles - Ace meant well, and she trusted him even if he was utterly bizarre and gross*

And then he had the nerve to ask me to join his crew after all that! I mean, you're my friend and all, Selphie, but I'm leaving that guy alllll to you. Luffy can be gross sometimes, but not like that! It's kind of, I don't know, like what you'd see a little kid do when Luffy does it. When Ace does it, you just want to punch him in the face and go take a bath to get the aura of gross off.

[She holds Selphie up and helps her wobble along as she rants.]

*Selphie laughs loudly, but it's caught short. The more she thinks about it, the less funny it seems to be. She shakes her head, looking ahead and hoping the shopping place with all the shoes is nearby*

Guess I'd better get round to the manners lessons once I get back on board. Captains really shouldn't be going round doing stuff like that, especially not to pretty ladies!

Forget captains, NO ONE should be going around doing things like that to a lady!

[To be honest, Kai still doesn't have the marketplace figured out. She can get them there, but that's about the extent of it. She wouldn't even begin to know where to start shopping for shoes.]

What did he expect? For me to throw myself at his feet and beg to join up with him? Um, no. He told me it wouldn't be a problem or damage my reputation, but how am I supposed to take the word of a guy with someone else's tooth in his pocket?

Yeah. You're right. It's just - not good.

*While Selphie can sometimes find herself feeling indignant about her sex, she probably doesn't feel the ignorance of it quite so keenly as Kai*

Probably it's a good idea not to listen to too much of what he says. I mean, I joined cause he offered me chicken. And I was hungry. So he's generous, and that's nice, but he talks a whole load of nonsense.

*And ta da - they must be at a shoe shop/stall by now?*

[Kai frowns at the displays. It's all a bit more complicated than she's used to. Certainly the merchants wouldn't hesitate to help her out if she asks, but how's she supposed to know if she can trust their suggestions, especially when she doesn't know how much to expect to pay?]

Shoes are complicated, Selphie.

[That's an understatement.]

Yeah... They sure are.

*Selphie lets go of Kai so that she can go closer to a pair and take a better look. She picks one up and pings at the various straps that criss cross over it*

What...is this?

I don't...I don't know. Do the straps keep it on?

[She tugs at one, but as far as she can tell, it doesn't serve any sort of purpose.]

Are they just decorative? They don't seem to attach in a way that makes sense.

[Kai picks up another pair that's inexplicably covered in metal studs.]

These look kinda dangerous. This is supposed to attract guys?
