The Great Ghost Race Mingle at Port Chance

Who: Anyone and all characters coming to Port Chance

What: Food, Fun, and preparation for the Great Ghost Race.

Racing or not, there is much to do and see on the days coming up to the Great Ghost Race. Port Chance is in full festival mode with food, dancing, games of luck and skill, and fireworks every evening. There are figures of Davy Jones everywhere, from statuettes to cloth dolls to painted signs, as if the residents are trying to ward off bad luck. Otherwise there is an air of festive mood, so come and mingle! Enjoy the sights and sounds! Gawk at the wide reverse waterfall as it goes up the mountain, or the more regular waterfall that goes down the other side.

That so? Well, well. [now he can't help but grin teasingly] I guess we're gonna have to look out for the likes of a great sailor, huh?

Oh, wait, except I'm the great pirate Gan Ning, so maybe not.

[Sinbad laughs merrily.]

You think so? Don't cry about it when I win, okay?

[damn, he can't argue against that kind of confidence]

It is just you on that little thing, then?

[If there's one thing Sinbad has in spades, it's confidence.]

No, not just me. I have my first mate Ja'far too. We came together. He's sworn himself to me. I'm going to be king!

Oh yeah? [folding his arms over his chest now] King of what?

Well I don't know yet. I'm going to make my own country. A better country.

Yeah. Heard that before. [could be a good thing or a bad thing, who knows?] You mean like, back home, or here? Because here...eh, pick a deserted island and call yourself king, there ya go.

[Sinbad laughs.]

I mean at home. This is just another adventure. I'm hoping to talk to as many people as I can!

I getcha. All right! Hang about here and you'll probably get your chance. Me, I'm just lookin' to see how all the ships are holdin' up before the big shebang.

I'm not worried. I'm a great navigator. I've been doing it for a long time now.

[He nods a bit to Gan Ning.]

So, how about you talk to me. Tell me about your world.

Mine? Eh, it's nothin' too special. Three kingdoms fightin' it out for control, same old same old really. I'm a general in the Wu army, now, but I ain't forgot my pirate roots. So, yanno, bein' here is a chance to play around without worrying about who's gonna take control of whose castle next week.

[He nods a little bit, listening.]

Did you choose to enlist?

I suppose that's true, haven't heard anything about nations or wars or anything since I've been here.

Uh. Not exactly. The first warlord I served paid pretty well, but it wasn't worth it. The Sun family, though, they're all right. They came to me, if you can believe it!

It's real different here. I don't even know if there's any real kingdoms, aside from, uh...what's that one called. Yuezhong. Which, it's funny, means 'end of the month' in my tongue, so I dunno if they're anything like where I come from.

They don't normally come to you? How strange...

[Sinbad seems to think about that.]

I only wonder because in Parthevia, if you're old enough and physically able, you can be drafted at any time to be sent off to die.

[Unless you tell Drakon to go fuck himself.]

I don't like that system. I haven't come across Yuezhong yet. Hopefully I will.

[He grins.]

Oh, sure, if I had been some peasant, I coulda been drafted. I think Wei's big on that. But I been a pirate a long time, nobody messes with pirates. Nobody's strong enough to just go and fight pirates into submission in order to draft 'em.

[and he is so damn proud of that. Despite the fact it's less about strength and more about resources.]

Sounds like a weak army you have, actually.

...oi, it's not my army. And it's not weak! Wu is pretty powerful, we've kept Wei at bay for I don't know how long.

[this is what he gets for running his mouth when he doesn't actually know a thing about politics]

If your army can't take out a couple of pirates, there's not much to be said about it.

[He exhales a little bit and rests his elbow on the railing, his chin on his palm.]

I don't know how Parthevia performs in war, at least they're not in a war now. They're recruiting for other things. When my father served in the army initially, there was pride there and they were strong.

Hey, I don't ask Lord Sun Quan why he'd rather deal with pirates than fight 'em. Ain't my business. It got me a good position and my men the security of the Wu army, that's all that matters.

[Sinbad's tale does sound familiar, though. That's probably how Ling Tong ended up in service as a teenager.]

It's interesting though.

[He isn't sure what he'd do about pirates. Probably nothing.]

Drakun will fight anyone he sees, I think. His princess is the same way.

[Sinbad laughs suddenly.]

Ah, sorry, sorry, I was just remembering something funny with the princess.

Oh, a princess-fighter? [he knows one of those!] Is she pretty?

She's very pretty. [Sinbad grins.]

Let me tell you the story. She and her soldiers were in the harbour and the people were upset, screaming at them. One of them insulted her father and she attacked the villager, punching him a few times. He begged for mercy, and when she reached back to hit him again, I grabbed her arm and asked her to stop.

[Sinbad was afraid of no one.]

She turns her angry eyes on me and says 'Sinbad!' and let me tell you, it was a wonderful sight, this beautiful girl who remembers my name. A princess on top of that! [He laughs.]

Unfortunately, my comment about her being a beautiful girl seemed to make her mad. Something about calling her a 'girl'. She draws her sword and stands there, challenging me. I try and tell her that I don't like to hurt girls, but that didn't matter much to her.

She was relatively skilled, although it's not very sporting to swing your sword at an unarmed man. On her third strike she cut into my arm, completely impressed with herself because she coats her blade with poison. Her attendants are going on in awe of her skill and doubting mine. I couldn't help myself, I began to laugh for moments before when I was avoiding her blade, I got my hands on her antidote. She reaches for her waist, completely horrified that I had my hand there and she hadn't even noticed!

[His grin widens.]

She moved in such away that my trap was set off, her bodice falling off her shoulders, nearly exposing her to the crowd, although she caught it and hid her chest at that moment. I took that time to sneak in there and I wrapped an arm around her and with a laugh I whisked her away as my hostage. I needed to get out of Parthevia and she was a great help in that.

I carried her to my ship and steered out a little way to sea. As soon as I knew I could get away I slipped her into a barrel and left her in the ocean Don't worry, she was safe and her soldiers rescued her, but it was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

[he leans in, listening keenly, and then busts a gut laughing, slapping a hand to his knee.]

Nice! Now that's a story! You really got in there and pickpocketed her? And then kidnapped her? Hoo boy! That's somethin'.

Now see, if that was Lady Shangxiang you were fightin', you wouldn't have gotten anywhere near being poisoned, you'd have just lost that arm. A fine price to pay for even the slightest touch, but really, if she doesn't kill ya, her brothers would.

[Sinbad snickered a little, enjoying Gan Ning's reactions as much as he did the story.]

Every word is the truth. It's the kind of story that's so good you can't even embellish it.

She'd have to strike me though. [It's not that easy to hit Sinbad.] That beautiful is she? There's something to be said about cute girls.

Well certainly her general has tried to kill me, he just hasn't succeeded.

Lady Shangxiang? Yeah, she's cute. But she grew up with two tough brothers and a famous warlord for a father, so she's really into fighting. Even her bodyguards - all women, mind - stand in full armor and are ready for battle at any moment.

Sounds to me like we could tell each other a lot of great stories, all night long.
