Roxas was confused.

This in itself was not that unusual, however it was different. Everything he worried about just days ago seemed to be less of a problem now that he's found himself in a new, somewhat hostile world. He met Riku and followed him to a ship, and today he was just hanging out, trying to get a feel for the place, and maybe unscramble the mess that was his memories.

In the morning, he can be found sitting on the railing overlooking the sea. Roxas looks content doing so, he had a fascination with the water.

In the afternoon, he can be found in the galley getting a snack, or perhaps down below deck, checking out his room and pacing between it and the steps so he can remember where it is.

In the evening, he can be found on deck on his back, staring at the stars.

I...I really don't know.

[He blinks at him. He's not sure what to think about it. The thought that Axel would lie to him, that hurts in his chest.]

I'll...I'll ask Lea.

[No heart his ass. Ikki watches Roxas face closely before he speaks again.]

Hn, maybe you're right. Maybe he didn't lie. But that still doesn't mean that someone couldn't have lied to him first. That's the problem of having only one source of information.

Do you think that could happen? He's really smart though, he knows everything.

No one knows everything, Roxas. And smart people can be lied to, it's not a matter of intelligence but of information. And of trust, if he trusts the person telling him things he won't have a reason to question them and will be easily lied to.

[A pause.]

Like you are with him.

[He seems to be processing this. Did Axel have a lot of people he trusted? Roxas isn't sure.]

I don't know. I think everyone did what Saix and Xemnas told them to. Saix was always giving me the stupid missions, because Xemnas was in charge. I'm not sure why. Maybe because his number was one. I was number thirteen.

And couldn't any of them lie to the others? To Axel?

[Roxas shrugs a bit.]

I don't know. They didn't talk to me much. Well Saix did, when he wanted me to do something, or to tell me to get to work. He was kind of mad about that sleeping thing I did.

He didn't want you to sleep?

One day I fell asleep and I was asleep for a long time. Days and days. I can't remember how long it was. I don't think he was happy about it.

... Was no one worried about you?

[Roxas' brow furrows a little. It feels like he should know something or that something's missing.]

It was after Axel didn't come back from Castle Oblivion, I think. I thought he was gone, but I...when I woke up no one was there or anything. I don't think they were worried about me. We're all Nobodies, we don't really feel things.

They. They may not really feel things. If you didn't feel things you wouldn't care about being told that you're not supposed to exist. You wouldn't have a "best friend". Wouldn't have problems with coming up with something to ask Sora.

[If anything had been made clear it was that fact and Ikki isn't going to let it be scrapped as nothing.]

Axel told me I'm not really feeling these things.

[He puts his hand on his chest.]

I don't know how else to say it. It's confusing for me. I mean, I think I feel things but maybe my mind is just tricking me.

[Silence as he stares Roxas.]

I guess then that you don't know that feelings and the like actually come from the mind and not the physical heart.

[Roxas shakes his head.]

Do they? But you have to be a heart-person to feel, and do all kinds of things. Like have summer vacation and go to school and stuff like that.

[Just a look.]

No, you don't. You need a mind and a working nerve system in your body. As for the vacation and school all you need is to register in one school and pay for it, then attend until summer when there's a holiday period before school starts again. And for all of those things you need a mind, not a heart.

You need a heart too but only because that organ keeps you alive, nothing else. I'm supposedly a heart-person, and I have never gone to school or had a summer vacation. Didn't have time or money for it.

You didn't? Why not? Is it expensive? How do you get money for it? How do you know so much then?

[Roxas looks interested, leaning forward.]

I was an orphan by the time I was old enough to go to school, I lived on the streets with my little brother. We had no one to take care of us and thus no one to pay the school fees for us. School may be very expensive or reasonably cheap, depends on the type of school it is and the services it gives. Supposedly the better education you want the more you have to pay, but that's not necessarily true.

[He chuckles, amused and leans back somewhere.]

Just because I haven't gone to school doesn't mean I haven't been educated. In fact, in my world the school system isn't as useful as it claims, most of the stuff people learn on it ends being forgotten due they never needing it and the stuff that isn't forgotten is because it belongs to whatever they work in later on. I don't know much about theories and such like other people who have gone there know, but I know more about life than they do. I've travelled a lot and talked to people from all around my world, it's a different kind of knowledge, but in the long run it's a better one in general.

What's an orphan?

[Roxas hums a bit.]

Do you like talking to different kinds of people? I wasn't really allowed to talk to people on missions.

A kid without parents. Because they died, abandoned them or whatever reason there may be.

[He chuckles again at the next question.]

I don't like talking to people, period. But it's impossible to live without doing it, and my job kind of forced me to talk to people. It's hard to coordinate things if you don't talk, after all.

[Parents again, huh? Must be pretty important, Roxas figures.]

Why don't you like talking to people?

[Ikki's actually surprised that Roxas doesn't ask about parents.]

Talking to people, hanging out with them, being social in general. It's not my kind of thing. When you do those things you make friends with people, and I'm not made to have friends.

[Fortunately Lea has already told him what parents are.]

You're not? Why not? Are you broken?

[He snorts.]

Broken?

No, but I'm a phoenix... Which you probably don't know what it is.

[He mutters to himself as he shakes his head.]

A phoenix is a unique creature, there's only one in the world... Or only one per world. It's immortal, not because it doesn't die but because when it dies it just resurrects from its own ashes, basically. Eternally surrounded by flames, a creature made of fire and because of that most of those who try to get close end sooner or later burned, not always literally though.

Wow, you die and come back?

[He grins a bit.]

Fire's not a bad thing, Axel has fire! He's never burned me.
