The black fortress ripples with shimmering iridescent energy, the piles of black coral heaped on roped together barges around it, bobbing in the waves. On the largest barge stands a slender man with a copper belt, wearing a face mask, orange red hair flecked with black from ash or dust. As the dawn slowly folds over the ocean, he'll look up, as if hearing some hidden voice.

At the top of the fortress, a figure climbs into vision, a woman, dressed in gray, features obscured by a hood with impenetrable darkness behind it. She staggers a moment as if she is weary, then straightens to her full height. As she speaks, her voice comes out of the journals, echoing over the water, low but clear.

"This is no small task ye do. She that rots within'll do anythin' ta stop ye. Don't hesitate to kill what ye find. If they were human once, they hain't no more. Watch out for her golems, too, or they'll drain ye dry quicker'n a wink. But if ye can get rid of 'em, it'll weaken her." She hesitates, cants her head to the side. "And if ye lot aren't as much of a bunch'a idiots as usual, ye might come out alive through this."

That said, she raises her hands. After a moment so does the man on the barge. For a moment, nothing seems to happen and then iridescent light shimmers over the coral, seeming to match that which surrounds the fortress. It crackles and dances like a fire, and then without warning bursts into a furious life, slamming against the energy of the fortress. There is the sound like thunder and light snaps and crackles, zipping with energy. Then with a woosh the light flies upward, taking the figure with it. The man on the barge lets out a cry like a seagull and dives into the water as if intending to swim after her.

For the boats that remain, a part of the fortress will crumble away into the sea, revealing a small harbor and an open doorway. Enter all ye who dare.

PLACEMARK TAG BECAUSE SHUT UP

"You're late," Marco drawled in deadpan, just loud enough to be heard if Ace was trying his damned hardest.

Because when worried sick, having traumatic flashbacks to your family members' respective deaths, and convinced everything is impossible or worse, puns are just the only way to go.

Landing soundly, Ace breathed in the fresh air. He had just smashed open part of the fortress to splash himself with sea water and enjoy something more cleansing than the filth he'd sat in for his period as a prisoner the week before. Stretching his arms out, Ace smiled towards Marco with mischief in his eyes.

"Of course I'm not," He grinned. "We don't have deadlines for this. The sea bitch is still kickin', so we've still got plenty of time to destroy her pride."
fierybluebird: (can you believe this guy?)

The more Marco was freaking out internally with too many emotions, the more deadpan he got.

This did not help his snark levels go down either.

"You didn't even kill her yet?" he asked, voice without inflection and all the deadpan sarcasm only Marco could muster. As if he could really be disappointed in finding Ace alive and not as tortured as in Impel Down.

Ace responded with a tight grin. Of course, Marco would complain no matter what, but he knew it was just the snark wagon, come into town after a long visit away. Despite his protests, Ace raised his hand up to his own head and tapped his index finger on one temple.

"Marco, I can hear your real voice like a trumpet up here," His arrogance bolted immediately and Ace was just left with a happy grin. "Say it! That you're happy to see me!"

So Ace's haki is either fully awakened, or he's got it going strong right now.

Either way, Marco's grin slowly spreads right back. He can't even hide it. Don't smile at him like that dumbass! It doesn't make him feel weak in the knees and ready to forgive and forget everything just to come save your sorry ass, all over again.

"Get down here already Fireworks! You know where you belong!" But he starts laughing light-heartedly. Ace is back to good, and aye, Marco is damned glad for it.

He felt a great certainty in himself that made him far too arrogant and ready to fight the whole world all over again. It had been problematic that the witch took a hold of him, but Ace felt invigorated. He was going to smash away at everything in his way from then on out.

"The Sun looks good, despite everything," Ace commented as he landed on the deck--after smashing through a few rows of zombies rising up to try and cloud the harbor.

"I'll get a better chance to inspect everything, but--for all the trouble we've caused, I'll repay everyone by doing maintenance by myself for awhile."
