The black fortress ripples with shimmering iridescent energy, the piles of black coral heaped on roped together barges around it, bobbing in the waves. On the largest barge stands a slender man with a copper belt, wearing a face mask, orange red hair flecked with black from ash or dust. As the dawn slowly folds over the ocean, he'll look up, as if hearing some hidden voice.

At the top of the fortress, a figure climbs into vision, a woman, dressed in gray, features obscured by a hood with impenetrable darkness behind it. She staggers a moment as if she is weary, then straightens to her full height. As she speaks, her voice comes out of the journals, echoing over the water, low but clear.

"This is no small task ye do. She that rots within'll do anythin' ta stop ye. Don't hesitate to kill what ye find. If they were human once, they hain't no more. Watch out for her golems, too, or they'll drain ye dry quicker'n a wink. But if ye can get rid of 'em, it'll weaken her." She hesitates, cants her head to the side. "And if ye lot aren't as much of a bunch'a idiots as usual, ye might come out alive through this."

That said, she raises her hands. After a moment so does the man on the barge. For a moment, nothing seems to happen and then iridescent light shimmers over the coral, seeming to match that which surrounds the fortress. It crackles and dances like a fire, and then without warning bursts into a furious life, slamming against the energy of the fortress. There is the sound like thunder and light snaps and crackles, zipping with energy. Then with a woosh the light flies upward, taking the figure with it. The man on the barge lets out a cry like a seagull and dives into the water as if intending to swim after her.

For the boats that remain, a part of the fortress will crumble away into the sea, revealing a small harbor and an open doorway. Enter all ye who dare.

[Well okay, he could certainly get used to THAT. She doesn't have to tell him twice, and he takes up position behind her, firing off several more rounds to undead closing in behind him.]

[Hajime cuts a wide swath through the zombies with the added range of the gigantic scissors, cheerfully providing sound effects for herself as she goes.]

Hey, hey, Captain Marvelous, there sure are a whole lotta zombies, aren't there? Where do you think they all came from? D'ya think this is what happens to people the witch lady steals? We better hurry, huh? Let's hurry hurry!

[...that was a disturbing thought. It sure was a lot of cannon fodder, and this is for someone used to a lot of cannon fodder.

He just follows behind her, though, literally walking backwards, firing and slashing as is necessary while he goes.

If this was what could, or possibly HAD happened to the very people they were coming to save...

No. Can't really think about that right now.

Ranger Keys out again, and once more into his weapons, he slams their cylinders together to close them.]

FINAL WAAAVE!

No time to worry about that, kid!

GOKAI SCRAMBLE!

[Another swath is cut behind them, the twin Final Waves erupting out of his gun and saber soaring off the dock and clear into the sea, mercifully avoiding anyone's ships.

Barely. Between the both of them, it clears a good way in both directions for the moment.]

I've been thinkin' about it though!

[Hajime sticks her scissors in the ground and leans on them. The zombies refuse to come within radius of the shard, so it's rather comical how they just seem to form a circle around her while she talks.]

There are lots and lots of zombies and everyone is fighting them and fighting them and fighting them, but wouldn't it just be easier to find the witch and make her call them off? It'll take really long if we just stay here.

That's sort of--

[He sighs, a few he missed are now rearing back towards him. He unloads on them with his gun, while only halfway looking and tilting his head back towards her as he stops near her and just picks them off.]

--the idea!

Still, that'll be easier once we've got enough people in there to kick her ass.

[Which may translate to, "I've been staying out here to clear a path so people CAN get in there," depending on how you read it.

Not that he'd ever put it like that. Nope.]

I see, I see. It's just that everyone seems awful busy fighting and not so busy going!

[She wanders a bit closer to the entrance to the fortress, zombies parting to let her through.]

I guess someone mighta snuck in while we were all fighting! Maybe I should see if my crew did!

You know what, that seems like a pretty good idea! Do that!

[And does he... yep. He just did. As she was close to the entrance now, he backtracks and starts working his way through the zombies behind her.

Not that he was just trying to make sure someone else got inside, or anything. Totally not.]
