The black fortress ripples with shimmering iridescent energy, the piles of black coral heaped on roped together barges around it, bobbing in the waves. On the largest barge stands a slender man with a copper belt, wearing a face mask, orange red hair flecked with black from ash or dust. As the dawn slowly folds over the ocean, he'll look up, as if hearing some hidden voice.

At the top of the fortress, a figure climbs into vision, a woman, dressed in gray, features obscured by a hood with impenetrable darkness behind it. She staggers a moment as if she is weary, then straightens to her full height. As she speaks, her voice comes out of the journals, echoing over the water, low but clear.

"This is no small task ye do. She that rots within'll do anythin' ta stop ye. Don't hesitate to kill what ye find. If they were human once, they hain't no more. Watch out for her golems, too, or they'll drain ye dry quicker'n a wink. But if ye can get rid of 'em, it'll weaken her." She hesitates, cants her head to the side. "And if ye lot aren't as much of a bunch'a idiots as usual, ye might come out alive through this."

That said, she raises her hands. After a moment so does the man on the barge. For a moment, nothing seems to happen and then iridescent light shimmers over the coral, seeming to match that which surrounds the fortress. It crackles and dances like a fire, and then without warning bursts into a furious life, slamming against the energy of the fortress. There is the sound like thunder and light snaps and crackles, zipping with energy. Then with a woosh the light flies upward, taking the figure with it. The man on the barge lets out a cry like a seagull and dives into the water as if intending to swim after her.

For the boats that remain, a part of the fortress will crumble away into the sea, revealing a small harbor and an open doorway. Enter all ye who dare.

"Dude could you like, not play with your gun like it's a toy? Didn't you go to gun school? Holster that shit, man," Dave came out of nowhere with it, interrupting suddenly because this was really, really important to him.

"Anyway, sorry-- Kinda have a thing about guns. But, yeah, you could talk to any of my time clones and probably get a better idea of where to run. Me, though, I'm not really sure where we are right now."

Marvelous gazed at him through his visor for several moments before... spinning the gun around several times on his finger as he lowered it, slipping his hand behind his back and then just coming back empty handed. Sorry Dave, he's not doing it like that to be a dick, he just doesn't even think about it.

"'Kay."

Pause.

"Your clones?"

"Time clones," He shrugged in response, quickly getting over things. He didn't feel the need to be nervous when somebody complied with his complete lack of a desire to be riddled in the torso with bullets or lasers or whatever that thing fired.

"Sort of. They're me, but at different times."

Ugh. Time travel. At least, it sounded like time travel.

He'd well enough had his fill of that.

Still, he had to ask.

"Future you, past you, or what? What happens if a past you gets killed? Or... what?"

Really, it didn't make much sense no matter how he tried to parse it. He normally wouldn't have tried to make sense of it, but damned if Sasuke's annoying questions about the logic of how things work didn't get his mind thinking that way sometimes now.

"If you see me, then a past me hasn't gotten killed," He shrugged, summoning a little turn-table out of the air and letting it hover in front of the warrior before him. Dave didn't really have much of an explanation.

"Basically, if you see me using time travel, then I'm successful. If you suddenly find yourself in a dead universe that's fading into nothing, then I've died. That's pretty much it."

"Dead universe?" Marvelous asked, and then paused a bit. Her heard groans and shuffling behind him and sighed.

Spinning, he raised his saber and struck down another zombie, only to see another few on their way towards them from the way he'd come.

"Nevermind, I probably don't want to know," he muttered and gave a grunt as he began to walk backwards. "These things are worse than a bunch of roaches."
