The black fortress ripples with shimmering iridescent energy, the piles of black coral heaped on roped together barges around it, bobbing in the waves. On the largest barge stands a slender man with a copper belt, wearing a face mask, orange red hair flecked with black from ash or dust. As the dawn slowly folds over the ocean, he'll look up, as if hearing some hidden voice.

At the top of the fortress, a figure climbs into vision, a woman, dressed in gray, features obscured by a hood with impenetrable darkness behind it. She staggers a moment as if she is weary, then straightens to her full height. As she speaks, her voice comes out of the journals, echoing over the water, low but clear.

"This is no small task ye do. She that rots within'll do anythin' ta stop ye. Don't hesitate to kill what ye find. If they were human once, they hain't no more. Watch out for her golems, too, or they'll drain ye dry quicker'n a wink. But if ye can get rid of 'em, it'll weaken her." She hesitates, cants her head to the side. "And if ye lot aren't as much of a bunch'a idiots as usual, ye might come out alive through this."

That said, she raises her hands. After a moment so does the man on the barge. For a moment, nothing seems to happen and then iridescent light shimmers over the coral, seeming to match that which surrounds the fortress. It crackles and dances like a fire, and then without warning bursts into a furious life, slamming against the energy of the fortress. There is the sound like thunder and light snaps and crackles, zipping with energy. Then with a woosh the light flies upward, taking the figure with it. The man on the barge lets out a cry like a seagull and dives into the water as if intending to swim after her.

For the boats that remain, a part of the fortress will crumble away into the sea, revealing a small harbor and an open doorway. Enter all ye who dare.

"You know it's a trap, right?" Smoker peered over his sunglasses at Gaius.

He was stating the obvious, but in this case, he felt it was warranted.

He hadn't heard that voice in a long time, but he wasn't sure if he should be relieved or wary, although he wouldn't blame the guy for being on his guard either, if word about what he and the girls had done had gotten around.

"That's the annoying part," he sighed, flicking the note back onto the table as he turned to glance at the man. "Heya Smokestack, how've you been?"

A grunt.

Don't ask, long day, blah blah, and all that.

"If you know it's a trap, why are you still thinking about it?"

Quiet for a second and then, "How is everyone else?"

"Because cake." Clearly that was a huge deal. "That's one messed up trap. You have no idea how long I have been craving cake," the thief muttered.

He fell silent at the question that followed, glancing away.

"...could be better. The girls, Mana and Alice- along with Hubert and me...witch got us." That should probably be explanation enough in its own right. "Didn't kill anyone, thankfully, but came close to it."

Yeah, like that wasn't an awkward line of conversation. It only felt more awkward for the lapse of silence that followed.

"Surely you could just have cake once you get back to the ship."

Right. Well, thank fate for small favors and all that.

"First things first, getting everyone out. Any idea where the others are?"

     "I guess...but it's still going to be a while."

Between whatever was going on topside and things around here? Yeah. Hopefully he had enough of a candy stash on him to keep him until then.

Hoping to stave off his cake craving, Gaius patted about his pockets and his cloak for something sweet. He pulled out a chocolate bonbon, unwrapping it before tossing it into his mouth. "Ugh, my reserves are running low," he muttered as he took a quick count of how many of those he had left.

"-eh?" Oh right. The others. "The three I was jailed with were together last I checked. The girls especially seemed intent on looking for that witch. Everyone else, I have no idea. If the rest of the crew's come this way, I haven't seen 'em around yet."

Smoker grunted in response. "All right, we'll look for them together, but I want you in front of me where I can keep my eye on you brat." Not that Gaius was all that young, but everyone's a brat so far as Smoker's concerned.

He gently lays a hand on Gaius' head and turns him away from the obviously trapped sweets. "March."

     "Wh-"

Okay, that had to be the first time he'd been called 'brat' in ages. He stared a moment at Smoker, but with a hand that size being placed on your head, there was little other option given than to follow its directions. He knew the guy meant well, but he couldn't help but automatically start figuring out escape routes.

It wasn't that he didn't like you, Smoker. He just didn't like being watched like that. Besides, wasn't there a treasure room around here, somewhere..?
