The black fortress ripples with shimmering iridescent energy, the piles of black coral heaped on roped together barges around it, bobbing in the waves. On the largest barge stands a slender man with a copper belt, wearing a face mask, orange red hair flecked with black from ash or dust. As the dawn slowly folds over the ocean, he'll look up, as if hearing some hidden voice.
At the top of the fortress, a figure climbs into vision, a woman, dressed in gray, features obscured by a hood with impenetrable darkness behind it. She staggers a moment as if she is weary, then straightens to her full height. As she speaks, her voice comes out of the journals, echoing over the water, low but clear.
"This is no small task ye do. She that rots within'll do anythin' ta stop ye. Don't hesitate to kill what ye find. If they were human once, they hain't no more. Watch out for her golems, too, or they'll drain ye dry quicker'n a wink. But if ye can get rid of 'em, it'll weaken her." She hesitates, cants her head to the side. "And if ye lot aren't as much of a bunch'a idiots as usual, ye might come out alive through this."
That said, she raises her hands. After a moment so does the man on the barge. For a moment, nothing seems to happen and then iridescent light shimmers over the coral, seeming to match that which surrounds the fortress. It crackles and dances like a fire, and then without warning bursts into a furious life, slamming against the energy of the fortress. There is the sound like thunder and light snaps and crackles, zipping with energy. Then with a woosh the light flies upward, taking the figure with it. The man on the barge lets out a cry like a seagull and dives into the water as if intending to swim after her.
For the boats that remain, a part of the fortress will crumble away into the sea, revealing a small harbor and an open doorway. Enter all ye who dare.

You haven't heard of bourbon?! Oh, we're going to have a good time!
[Please don't mind Grell tugging Helen along quicker than before.]
no subject
[Hey, she lived a surprisingly sheltered life! She knows beer and mead, and not much else. Helen doesn't mind her tugging her along, quickening her pace.]
It's alcohol, right? I've tried....beer and mead?
no subject
We definitely do not stock such...wares. Nor will we ever.

[Who is she kidding, she likes everything.]

[Their travels will lead them to the storage room, where most of their items that wouldn't go bad over a long period of time are kept. Amidst the shelves of blankets, rations, jars of body parts in embalming fluid, and other crates, there is a barrel with a spout. There are other barrels, but this particular one has what they need to get the liquid out.]
Hmm...I think there are a few cups... [It's been a while since she had to be in here, so she searches a few shelves before puling out two that were crafted nicely.] Bingo! [One is handed to Helen.]
no subject
Thanks! Y'want me to pour some for us?
[She holds out her hand to take Grell's cup for her. Hey, it seems like the nice thing to do for one's captain!]
no subject
[Ah, she's starting to like her already!]
no subject
[Helen takes her cup, and starts filling both cups up with delicious bourbon.]
Just makin' myself useful.
[She adds with a laugh. This whole "being on a ship" thing is totally new to her, and she's feeling pretty grateful that she's been given a chance to join the crew.]
no subject
[Being on a ship wasn't so bad, in Grell's opinion. She just wish they had better showers. Or a shower.]
What is it that you do for a living? [Might as well make small talk and get some information.]
no subject
[She speaks proudly, grinning. She's rather proud of being a warrior, after all.]
Like a monster hunter, really.

Ah~? What was the most memorable battle you've had?
no subject
The most memorable? I've had a few! I spent an entire day fighting these monsters that just wouldn't stop coming.
[Again she looks proud as all hell, even though it was one bitch of a battle.]
My comrades and I managed to get through it, but it was one hell of a fight. They were tough bastards.

[Grell makes a mental note that the girl can at least play well with others.]
Did all your comrades carry around such large weapons? [She notions to her sword.]
